Costa Rica is a country known internationally for its eco-credentials, dazzling coastlines, and reputation as one of the happiest and most peaceful nations on earth. Beneath this facade, however, lies an exclusionary rhetoric of nationalism bound up in the concept of the tico, as many Costa Ricans refer to themselves. Beginning by considering the very idea of national identity and what this constitutes, this book explores the nature of the idealised tico identity, demonstrating the ways in which it has assumed a white supremacist, Central Valley-centric, patriarchal, heteronormative stance based on colonial ideals. Chapters two and three then go on to consider the literature and films produced that stand in opposition to this normative image of who or what is tico and their creation as vehicles of soft power which aim to question social norms. This book explores protest literature from the 1970s by Quince Duncan, Carmen Naranjo, and Alfonso Chase who narrate their experiences from the margins of society by virtue of their identity as Afro-Costa Rican, feminist, and homosexual authors. Cinema from the twenty-first century is then analysed to demonstrate the nuanced and intersectional position chosen by national directors Esteban Ramirez, Paz Fabrega, Jurgen Urena, and Patricia Velasquez to challenge the dominant nation-image as they reinscribe youth culture, Afro-Costa Rica, a female consciousness, and trans identity into the fabric of the nation.

Originally published in 1955. The Madhyamika philosophy is, in the authors view, the philosophy which created a revolution in Buddhism and through that in the whole range of Indian philosophy. This volume is a study of the Madhyamika philosophy in all its important aspects and is divided into three parts Historical this traces the origin and development of the Madhyamika philosophy. The second part concentrates on a full and critical exposition of the Madhyamika philosophy, the structure of its dialectic, its conception of the Absolute and its ethics and religion. The last part of the book compares the Madhyamika with some of the well-known dialectical systems of the West (Kant, Hegel and Bradley) and undertakes a short study of the different absolutisms (Madhyamika, Vijnanavada and the Vedanta).

Offering a diversity of strategies and approaches to the philosophical issues involved in reading and thinking about the Presocratics in the wake of Martin Heideggers thought, the authors explicate the thinking of key figures such as Homer, Anaximander, Anaximeries, Parmenides, Heraclitus, and Empedocles. The philosophical problems of logos, logic, truth, history, tradition, ethics, and tragedy are presented and re-thought in relation to Heideggers thinking. Not only is the role of the Presocratics in Heideggers reading re-thought but also, following a trajectory opened up by Heidegger, questions and reading of the Presocratics that he himself did not broach are pursued. These include How does logos change in Heideggers dialogue with the Presocratics? What is the place of the Presocratics in the other inception of thinking? How is Heideggers reading of tragedy also a dialogue with Nietzsche and Holderlin? How do concealment and disclosure function in Homers corpus? Do the pronouncements of Anaximader bring us to think the beginning of story and to question the need for ethics and justice? How does Anaximenes come to think and speak all that manifests itself? What is the role of presence in Parmenides divine pedagogy? ow does Heidegger come to remember Heraditus and what is the disruptive nature of Hearclitus sayings?

Pundits regularly declare that Christianity is dying. And in a way they are correct. Its golden age of influence is long gone in Western Europe, and similar trends are happening in North America. But while it slowly dies in the West, Christianity has been coming to life in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Christianity is rising. Megachurches in Nigeria, India, and South Korea have tens of thousands of members. The largest Roman Catholic populations in the world are found in Brazil, Mexico, and the Philippines. And sociologists predict that there could be nearly 600 million Christians in China by 2040. Now immigrants, refugees, and missionaries from the Global South look to former strongholds of Christian influence in the West as new mission fields, bringing their vibrant faith to our shores. They are bringing the gospel back to us in new and surprising ways. The future of Christianity is bright, you just have to look around.Review With delightful personal stories from Malaysia to New Mexico, Daughrity takes readers on a fascinating journey one regional block at a time. This book brings together a number of distinguished historians, literary and cultural scholars to explore the continuum of the English Republic and the Restoration of the Stuart monarchy in 1660. Examining the continuities between periods frequently regarded as discrete, the volume not only challenges a traditional period boundary but sheds much new light on the political, religious and cultural conditions before and after the restoration of monarchy and church. Essays address a wide range of topics including rebellion, religion and dissent, republicanism and political theory, theatre, opera and art. Canonical writers Milton, Marvell, Hobbes - are discussed alongside lesser known figures, such as the projector William Petty and the prophetess Eleanor Davies, whose work equally crossed the ideological divide. **
