January 22, 2010 – James Bovard – The Scott Horton Show – Episode 1103
James Bovard, author of Attention Deficit Democracy, discusses the two-party conspiracy against justice since the Independent Counsel's expiration in 1999, the thousands of illegal FBI wiretaps excused as mere "technical violations" by apologists, the dumbing down of the Bill of Rights and the barriers to enforcing a police state in the US.

Scott is again joined by Ryan McMaken of the Mises Institute to talk about the economy. First, they examine the major fluctuations in the money supply to help us predict where in the boom-bust cycle we might be. They then identify the dominant economic philosophy of the U.S. government before finishing with a discussion of the national debt, housing and employment.

Scott talks with Dan McKnight about the effort to pass Defend the Guard legislation, which would block the use of National Guard troops in foreign combat operations without a declaration of war. McKnight gives background on what led him to become involved in political activism and how the absence of the Louisiana National Guard during Hurricane Ida is yet another reason for this legislation. Scott and McKnight also talk about the value veterans bring to the movement to end wars. Lastly, McKnight explains that despite being relieved the war is over, he believes the Afghanistan withdrawal was handled disgracefully.

Nicolas Davies joins the show for an update on the situation in Bolivia, where President Evo Morales was forced to flee the country last year after allegations that his party fixed the elections to give him another term. Davies argues that the elections probably were fair after all, but at the time these allegations were enough to set in motion a military coup that saw the installation of an interim government more aligned with America’s interests. Interim President Jeanine Áñez twice delayed a promised round of new elections, prompting widespread protests from Bolivian citizens. When elections were finally held, Morales’ party took back power in a landslide victory, which Davies considers a clear repudiation of what amounted to a Western-backed coup attempt last year. He says that the United States government must stop trying to interfere this way all over the world if it wants to maintain any of its former credibility as a beacon of freedom and democracy.

Sandy Tolan, author of The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East, discusses his article “It’s the Occupation, Stupid” about how the encroachments on historic Palestine leave little room for a two-state solution; how Tolan’s extended research for his upcoming book gave him ample opportunity to observe daily life in the West Bank – and the omnipresent signs of occupation; the large percentage of Palestinian men who have spent time in Israeli jails; and the “musical intifada” at an Israeli checkpoint, where Mozart’s music brought a brief glimmer of hope to a desolate Palestinian town.
