This book treats the presence of God and the presence of persons. The experience of the presence of God is a well-recognized religious experience in theistic traditions. The experience of the presence of persons, this book argues, is an analogous moral experience. As it is possible for individuals to come into the presence of God to have this phenomenal experience so it is possible for them to come into the presence of persons. Kellenberger explores how coming into the presence of persons is structurally analogous with coming into the presence of God. Providing a highly focused analysis of the two seemingly distinct concepts, normally thought to fall under different subfields of philosophy, the chapters carefully draw paralells between them. Kellenberger then goes on show how, analogous to the death of God, a loss of the consciousness of the reality of God and his presence, is a death of persons, felt as a loss of the sense of the inherent worth of persons and their presence. This volume finishes with an examination of the concrete moral and religio-ethical implications of coming into the presence of persons, and in particular the implications of coming into the presence of all persons. Reference is a central topic in philosophy of language, and has been the main focus of discussion about how language relates to the world. R. M. Sainsbury sets out a new approach to the concept, which promises to bring to an end some long-standing debates in semantic theory. There is a single category of referring expressions, all of which deserve essentially the same kind of semantic treatment. Included in this category are both singular and plural referring expressions (Aristotle, The Pleiades), complex and non-complex referring expressions (The President of the USA in 1970, Nixon), and empty and non-empty referring expressions (Vulcan, Neptune). Referring expressions are to be described semantically by a reference condition, rather than by being associated with a referent. In arguing for these theses, Sainsburys book promises to end the fruitless oscillation between Millian and descriptivist views. Millian views insist that every name has a referent, and find it hard to give a good account of names which appear not to have referents, or at least are not known to do so, like ones introduced through error (Vulcan), ones where it is disputed whether they have a bearer (Patanjali) and ones used in fiction. Descriptivist theories require that each name be associated with some body of information. These theories fly in the face of the fact names are useful precisely because there is often no overlap of information among speakers and hearers. The alternative position for which the book argues is firmly non-descriptivist, though it also does not require a referent. A much broader view can be taken of which expressions are referring expressions not just names and pronouns used demonstratively, but also some complex expressions and some anaphoric uses of pronouns. Sainsburys approach brings reference into line with truth no one would think that a semantic theory should associate a sentence with a truth value, but it is commonly held that a semantic theory should associate a sentence with a truth condition, a condition which an arbitrary state of the world would have to satisfy in order to make the sentence true. The right analogy is that a semantic theory should associate a referring expression with a reference condition, a condition which an arbitrary object would have to satisfy in order to be the expressions referent. Lucid and accessible, and written with a minimum of technicality, Sainsburys book also includes a useful historical survey. Resemblance and Reality in Greek Thought follows the construction of reality from Homer into the Hellenistic era and beyond. Cambridge Cambridge University Press, 2013. Pp. 48-90. It represents in a sense a return to my first book, Hegels Trinitarian Claim A Critical Reflection. That is, it treats of Hegel on Trinity, but now from the perspective of the impact of Hegels trinitarian thought on subsequent philosophical and theological developments in the area of trinitarian thought. In this book I add a presentation on Schellings trinitarian thought in Schellings 183132 lectures on the philosophy of religion, a text to my knowledge so far only available in German. Along with Hegels influence, the book follows that of Schelling as well. It ends with a listing of a number of challenges the trinitarian thought of Hegel and Schelling continue to pose to contemporary philosophers and theologians. In a real sense, Hegel and Schelling mark a clear and, one might even say, decisive break with previous trinitarian thought based to varying extents on a philosophy of substance. They work, rather, primarily with notions of subjectivity and relationality. It is my hope that this study will encourage further reflection on the legacy left by German Idealisms philosophical interpretations of Trinity and on its continuing value for those who would think creatively about Trinity today.
