An armed suspect who fired at Volusia County sheriff’s deputies was fatally wounded Thursday afternoon and a VCSO sergeant survived with a grazing gunshot wound to the head in a shooting that erupted near Interstate 4 after the suspect carjacked a woman at gunpoint in Deltona, led deputies on a pursuit to the DeLand area and appeared to be ready to carjack another innocent person. The initial carjacking was reported around 2:21 p.m. at a home on the 2500 block of Ludlow Street in Deltona, where the victim said a man got in her truck, pointed a gun at her, demanded her keys and then took off in the vehicle. Deputies attempted to stop the stolen truck in Deltona, but the suspect continued fleeing erratically. At one point, the suspect swerved at a deputy who deployed stop sticks on the truck. As he fled, the suspect appeared to be waving a handgun out the driver’s side window.
After several stop stick hits, with all four tires appearing to be deflated, the truck slowed to a crawl and came to a stop on State Road 44 in front of the Volusia County Fairgrounds. The suspect got out of the truck with the gun still in his hand and ran in the direction of several motorists who were stopped on the road next to him. A deputy drove his unmarked SUV in the suspect’s direction, preventing him from reaching another potential carjacking victim, and the suspect ran the other direction and opened fire at several other responding deputies. Deputies returned fire, striking the suspect several times. Still armed with the handgun, the suspect went into the woods, where deputies ultimately took him into custody, brought him out and performed first aid before he was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The deceased is Phillip Thomas Marsh, 30 (DOB 12/7/1988), of Lake Helen. Marsh had been reported missing and suicidal earlier this week and at the time, it was noted he was known to act violently toward law enforcement and has made threats of “suicide by cop” and suicide by other means. The sergeant who received the graze wound to the head is Sgt. Thomas Dane, 54, who has been a VCSO deputy for 30 years (hire date in July 1988). Footage from Sgt. Dane’s body-worn camera indicates he was shot soon after emerging from his vehicle. His hat was found lying on the road with an entry hole next to the “SHERIFF’S K-9 UNIT” logo on the front, and an exit hole a few inches above that. He was treated and released from Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
In total, five deputies fired at Marsh. The exact number of shots fired is unconfirmed at this time. It’s believed Marsh fired multiple times. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting the official investigation into the shooting. Those who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard following a deputy-involved shooting. Sheriff Mike Chitwood, who was one of several units involved in the pursuit and was on scene during the shooting itself, commended the tactics and coordination of all involved. “Everything that they did was to try to prevent what happened – knowing that this was probably what was going to happen,” Chitwood said, adding: “I know tonight when I go home, I’ll be saying a prayer thanking the good Lord that Sgt. Dane will be back to work real soon.” The area of the incident was reopened to traffic around 8 p.m. Thursday.

A Cobb County police lieutenant has been moved to administrative duty for making what the department deemed were “inappropriate racial comments” during a traffic stop last year. The request for dash camera footage of the incident prompted an internal investigation of Lt. Greg Abbott. The footage shows a female driver pulled over during a DUI traffic stop telling Abbott that she was scared to move her hands in order to get her cellphone because “I’ve just seen way too many videos of cops ... ” At that point, she is cut off by Abbott. “But you’re not black. Remember, we only shoot black people,” the police veteran of nearly three decades can be heard saying. “Yeah. We only kill black people, right? All the videos you’ve seen, have you seen the black people get killed?” The footage is from July 2016, before Mike Register took over as chief of Cobb police. He said that Abbott will remain on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation, for which he didn’t give a timeline. A statement Wednesday from the department said Register just found out about the recording Friday. “No matter what context it was said, it shouldn’t have been said,” Register told Channel 2. This was also before a study by the International Association of Chiefs of Police ordered the department to address public perceptions of racism and discriminatory policing.
Suri Chadha Jimenez, who is representing the driver in the case, said he thinks the officer was being sarcastic after the woman “gave him some lip.” “It makes you cringe when you hear it. It’s unacceptable,” Jimenez said. Lance LoRusso, Abbott’s attorney, gave the station this statement: “Lt. Greg Abbott is a highly respected 28-year veteran of the Cobb County Police Department. He is cooperating with the department's internal investigation and will continue to do so. His comments must be observed in their totality to understand their context. He was attempting to de-escalate a situation involving an uncooperative passenger. In context, his comments were clearly aimed at attempting to gain compliance by using the passenger’s own statements and reasoning to avoid making an arrest.” In the police statement, Cobb County commission chairman Mike Boyce is quoted as saying: “I have seen the video and obviously have great concerns. I find the comments on the video repugnant and offensive beyond measure.” This comes a day after the department released information about an officer-involved shooting that injured a 16-year-old’s upper thigh. The shooting was deemed justifiable by a grand jury. “We are going to keep going forward to make sure we, as a police department, service the community in a most professional way. All segments of the community,” Register said.

Pleasantville, New Jersey — On May 24, 2022, Pleasantville Police received a 911 call at approximately 9:35 a.m. indicating that an individual had discharged a gun at the Dollar General store located on South New Road in Pleasantville. At approximately 9:37 a.m., a Pleasantville Police Officer responded to the Dollar General and discovered Mr. Whitted inside the store – with a handgun protruding from his right pocket. As additional officers arrived, Mr. Whitted walked toward the officers and refused to follow directions to stop and drop to the ground, at which time Whitted said to the officers “shoot me.” The officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by backing away and allowing Whitted to exit the store and stand on the front sidewalk.
Whitted then reached for and placed his hand on the handgun in his right pocket, at which time five police officers discharged their duty firearms at him. Officers and an EMT rendered medical aid to Whitted. He was eventually taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, where he underwent hours of surgery. Whitted was charged in June with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon by Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose. Initially, Whitted’s charges were dropped through an administrative dismissal, but they were reinstated. He was taken to the Atlantic County jail after he was released from the hospital.

Police in St. Paul released body camera footage Friday that shows a man was armed with a gun before officers shot and killed him during an early morning confrontation. Officers Matthew Jones and Vincent Adams shot William James Hughes, 43, on an apartment building porch Aug. 5. Hughes' family has questioned why he had to die. State investigators are still reviewing the incident but Police Chief Todd Axtell took the unusual step of releasing the officers' bodycam footage before the probe is complete. Axtell said during a news conference before showing the video to reporters that the shooting has generated "widespread rumors and falsehoods" that could erode public trust in police and place officers in danger. The footage shows Jones and Adams enter the enclosed porch and knock on a door. Hughes emerges from another door with a pistol in his right hand. As the officers yell at him to put his hands up, he moves the gun toward the ceiling. The pistol momentarily points toward the officers as he swings it upward and one or both of them open fire. A search warrant application the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension filed this week indicates the incident began when Hughes became angry and fired two or three shots into a wall and then pointed his gun at his roommate's head. The roommate fled and called police. Hughes was a member of the White Earth Nation, an Ojibwe band based in northern Minnesota.
Relatives told investigators he had been suicidal over a terminal illness that limited his quality of life, according to the warrant application. Axtell said he had watched the footage with Hughes' family. He held up two envelopes at the news conference saying they contained cards Hughes' sister asked him to deliver to Adams and Jones. "This is the first time in my 30-year career that I've ever seen such grace by a family met by such a tragedy," Axtell said. Ramsey County Attorney John Choi issued a statement saying the video is hard to watch but is just one piece of evidence in the case. The BCA is relaying information daily and he plans to analyze all the data before deciding whether the shooting was justified, Choi said. John Gordon, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, issued a statement questioning whether officers truly had to fire. "Having a gun, in and of itself, is not reason enough for someone to be shot," Gordon said. "Officers need extensive training on how to secure an area and de-escalate dangerous situations so that shootings are a last resort, not a routine practice. That, unfortunately, did not happen for William Hughes." St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter issued a statement saying the footage is "heartbreaking" and the city wishes the shooting had never happened.

Napa, California — The Napa County Sheriff's Department released a video Tuesday showing the moment a deputy shot and killed a robbery suspect after a chase that occurred on April 24th, 2020 in Napa. The robbery suspect, Brandan Reid Nylander, entered Walmart and used a hammer to shatter a glass display case containing ammunition. The suspect grabbed a box of shotgun shells and threw the hammer, hitting a Walmart employee. Napa Dispatch issued a description of the suspect and his car. About 20 minutes later Deputy Gregg Lee spotted Nylander driving on SR-29.
Deputy Lee attempted to stop the suspect, but Nylander led deputies on a pursuit that lasted almost 3 minutes. At the end of the pursuit the suspect got out of his car and pointed a loaded shotgun at two deputies. Nylander’s actions prompted Deputy Gregg Lee to fire two shots, however both shots missed the suspect. Nylander continued to hold the loaded gun and began walking to the front of his car with his hands raised, but still holding the loaded shotgun. Deputy Lee fired two more shots. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sheriff's Office has gathered evidence that suggests the suspect was suicidal.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability released video Wednesday of the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Maurice Granton by a Chicago police officer. Granton, who police said was armed, was shot around 8:15 p.m. on June 6 in the 300-block of East 47th Street in the city's Bronzeville neighborhood. Tactical officers from the 2nd District were conducting a narcotics investigation in the area when police said Granton ran from them. Officers chased him and told him to stop. Police said that's when he pulled out a weapon and "an armed encounter between the offender and police ensued." Granton was shot in the back, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. He was transported to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide. His sister, Joanna Varnado, identified her brother's body after he was pronounced dead. She also said he was shot in the back. "I didn't see any blood or anything on the front of him. I wasn't able to see the back because he was laying, of course, on his back. There was no blood stains, anything, on the front," Varnado said. Witnesses at the scene Wednesday night gave differing accounts of what happened. "I saw it! I was right there! I saw everything. He was laying over - I guess he ran through (there) trying to make it.
I guess they thought he had whatever he had, but he didn't have no gun! That's my cousin!" said Princess Evans, an eyewitness and Granton's relative. A sergeant who was injured in the incident was transported to a hospital for treatment. A weapon was recovered at the scene. Police later tweeted a photo of the gun. Granton's family said the weapon in the photo was not his gun. "No, that's not his, he doesn't have a gun," said Kaeinji Jackson, sister. "There are eyewitnesses to say Maurice never pointed a gun," said Eric Russell, Tree of Life Justice League of Illinois. "They planted that gun. There's a coverup!" "He wouldn't even chance his life doing that, knowing he had two very young kids to come home to," said Tayshia Shaw, the mother of Granton's children. His relatives said the young father turned his life around after the birth of his two daughters. Granton has a criminal record that includes convictions for robbery and theft. But his relatives said, regardless of his past, he was running away from officers and was not a threat. The officer involved in the shooting was assigned to administrative duty for 30 days, per Chicago Police Department policy. The shooting remains under investigation.
