August 2, 2010 – Jacob H. Huebert – The Scott Horton Show – Episode 1361
J.H. Huebert, professor of law at Ohio Norther University School of Law, scholar at the Ludwig von Mises Institute and author of Libertarianism Today, discusses the truth in Randolph Bourne’s old maxim “War is the health of the state,” the fallacy of pro-war libertarianism, conservative politicians who give lip service to free markets come election time and profit from government controlled competetion afterward, the origin of the war on (some) drugs and its disastrous results for the U.S. prison population and why libertarians – if always in the extreme minority – can take some consolation in being right on the big issues of the day.

Nick Turse, associate editor of TomDispatch.com, discusses his article “A Drone-Eat-Drone World;” the Pentagon’s eager anticipation of autonomous drones that decide when and where to rain death from above; why drones are rapidly proliferating even though they aren’t effective in fighting and winning wars; the 1-to-1 UAV flight time to maintenance ratio; and the ability of drones to evade rifle-wielding tribesmen – but not semi-modern air defenses (or Pakistani public opinion).

Tom Streithorst joins Scott to talk about his latest article, “War Doesn’t Make Sense Anymore,” in which he outlines his theory of America’s modern wars: We no longer care about winning wars at all, we just do it to make money. Of course, it’s only the political class and the military industrial complex who make any money, never mind the innocent foreigners—and Americans—we kill along the way.
Tom Streithorst is a journalist and former cameraman for Fox News. He writes about foreign policy and economics.

Brendan O’Neill, editor of Spiked, discusses his article “Syria and the Hole at the Heart of the Arab Revolts” about the stalemated Arab spring; why the London riots are more about mindless looting than any particular political grievance; waning US influence in the Middle East, as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praises and condemns actions from afar, as a spectator; and how the lack of ideological congruence among rebels/protesters allows under-pressure despotic regimes to regroup and remain in power.

Scott has Bob Murphy on the show to explain the Austrian School’s view of the boom and bust cycle in the American economy. Murphy explains why the Keynesians are wrong to assert that booms and busts are simply an inherent feature of capitalism. In fact, it is intervention in the free market by central banks—in particular the fact that they control the interest rate, which should be the free-floating price of borrowing money—that contribute to years of misallocation of resources. Eventually, there are too many investments that never should have been financed, with not enough real savings to carry them across the finish line, and business ventures start to fail en masse. Murphy and Scott explore some of the political dangers to having such a system. Notably, people who suppose that America is a laissez-faire capitalist paradise find it easy to blame the institution of capitalism when things go wrong, instead of recognizing that we already have a hugely socialized economy. Murphy works hard to persuade people of all the problems with our current system, even while things are good, so that they’ll be in a better position to understand why things really go wrong.
Bob Murphy is an economist with the Institute for Energy Research, a research fellow with the Independent Institute, and a senior fellow at the Ludwig von Mises Institute. He is the author of Contra Krugman: Smashing the Errors of America’s Most Famous Keynesian, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Capitalism, and Choice: Cooperation, Enterprise, and Human Action, among others. Find him on Twitter @BobMurphyEcon and listen to his podcasts, Contra Krugman and The Bob Murphy Show.

Charles Featherstone, regular writer at LewRockwell.com, discusses a possible quid pro quo arrangement between the US and Saudi Arabia, where Saudi support for a Libya no-fly zone is exchanged for US permission to crush the Bahrain protests; why those concerned with the Libyan rebels’ safety should remember the often-disastrous consequences of US “humanitarian” missions; the unfortunate habit of classifying US foreign policy actions in terms of public relations outcomes; and why a bloody assault on rebel-held Benghazi would prompt the UN Security Council to take action against Col. Gaddafi.
