Editors - CK Zamek, Poznań April 10 2010 (J.B.'s Bootleg Video)
This is an addition to a post that already exists at the Archive, covering Editors trip to Poland in April of 2010 on their long and winding In This Light and on This Evening campaign. It's an audience recorded bootleg video from the show that was recorded by jacolb (many thanks to you for this). Although it is incomplete, it's still fun to travel back 11 years and see just what it was that had all of us on the road to full blown Editors addiction. Plus, there's a description of the recording from the cat behind the camera and I'm reproducing here because it's awesome. Take it away, J.B.:-
"Hi to all Editors fans around the world.
This is my second Editors video bootlegs, so sorry for all shakes, losing the focus, and other mistakes. It was the only concert in Poland in spring part of the tour after releasing new album. The second concert - in Wroclaw was cancelled. So you may think what was the atmosphere of
the concert. Fans, fans, fans, and not many people who were on this concert by accident. The gig was great, and I beleieve that fans showed the band that they love them.
Unfortunatelly "shit happens". Due to very unfortunate accident this is INCOMPLETE recording. Only beginning of An End has a start was recorded and 4/5 of Bones are recorded. You Don't Know Love is missing in full. The rest of songs is recorded in full. I was sitting at the balcony - 1st row on the left side.

Polish fans are a passionate, song-literate bunch of folks and this gig proves it. They show up screaming at virtually the beginning of every track, staying with the band for the duration. There were a whole lot of people with croaky voices the morning after this one, I reckon. In competitive terms, and decibels generated, Polish always set the bar admirably high for future audiences.
I love the way the band play with atmosphere and mood during the show, and it feels at it's most obvious during The Big Exit. I've always found that song to be a very claustrophobic experience, and I don't know if that was the original intention when they were doing it. If it was, then they really hit the mark because the combination of that music and Tom being tied to a keyboard for its duration to restrict his movement just makes it a tense, brooding affair. All framed in a sickly green light. It actually seems like a four part act, like the band formulated a setlist that begins with the exuberance of Bullets before abruptly walking the listener into something very unsettling, then engaging the less threatening (but muted paranoia) of Racing Rats as a way back to the bouncing, brightly lit singalong that is Munich. It's like it takes two songs to fully escape the gravitational pull of The Big Exit. As a fan I want to believe they meticulously planned it that way, but I'll take happenstance as an alternative. Another show from the United States now, as we get a chance to hear Editors' set when they played the San Diego "Street Scene" festival in August of 2006. I don't have any taper details for this one so I can't give the credit due, unfortunately.
I noticed while I was listening back to this the little beauty, subtle changes that were becoming the norm; things like Munich going for 2 verses before it hits the chorus, instead of only one on the recorded version. Also, You Are Fading was starting to get a bit longer in length, which is great because they could play that song for about 50 minutes and it would still sound amazing (but then I would say that, wouldn't I?). Someone Says has the extended intro and when it starts properly it just slides like Bambi on ice. Fantastic. I'm just looking at the lineup for Street Scene and if they gained nothing else from this show, they can proudly boast that they shared a bill with Queens of the Stone Age, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wu-Tang Clan and Snoop Dogg. Quality! For all you completists, here's who else was there:-

Here's a live recording from a friend to the Archive, Dave Austria. Many thanks to you for making your work available in 2013. I'm really happy to be able to take it to the fans one more time all these years later.
The shows from this particular era in 2013 were of particular interest to long time Editors fans, because Someone Says, Like Treasure and YDKL appeared back on regular rotation as part of the live set. It's a true crime that Like Treasure has free-fallen down the list of potential presentations when they've compiled the setlists in the latter seasons of their touring lives. It's almost adopted the moniker of "forgotten son".
Sadly, that's the problem with subjectively appreciating something you have absolutely no control over; ultimately its destiny is out of your hands, regardless of the amount of passion and fondness you have invested in it. The band themselves have made it clear before that they felt Like Treasure never really went over when they played it live, which has probably been the reason for its status as "overlooked" later on. Regardless, it is still in my opinion one of Editors' greatest compositions. The versions they played later with Justin on guitar managed to be faithful and sneakily reverential, given that the first thing you heard in the new arrangement is the original outro for the song that Chris wrote. I've always felt that was a lovely touch.
As well as Like Treasure there was also the adrenaline teasing full-band take of Nothing, appreciated by all the people who had heard the album version and instantly developed an irrational fear of string arrangements. You may mock, but it absolutely happened.

"This is the first time I've been to Brixton Academy. It's alright." - Tom prior to Munich
An understated moment in an explosive set from December of 2005, when Editors appeared as part of XFM's "Winter Wonderland" at the Brixton Academy in London (check out their 2012 set here). The show is being shared here in the quality it was streamed online in, and as such it doesn't look as wonderful as it could. This was, after all, almost 11 years ago so HD video hadn't really come into its own yet. Also, and unfortunately for us this webstream was cut just before they played their last number, which I'm guessing was Open Your Arms. I hope, however, that it doesn't spoil your enjoyment of the material.
What's interesting about this particular show is that they are playing on a bigger stage than usual, certainly for that point in their musical journey, and yet they look totally at home. There are hints and indicators all over the place of the band they would become around the time of AEHAS when all hell broke loose and they were performing sell-out shows in large venues. There's no better example than during Fingers in the Factories, which sees Tom spinning across the stage and the crowd going ape-shit. Considering the achievements that they made after this, it's fascinating to look back and see the start of it all. Enjoy the music ;)

7 months. Yep, we're counting.
I can't decide if it's accidentally ironic or very aware and knowing. After a 7 month break, and right as he chooses to connect with the outside world again, Tom posts a video on Instagram with that opening lyric "Out of touch" as an introductory tag line. Not any more, Mr Smith.
Very unexpected but very welcomed, this is the live debut of At All Cost from In Dream, as Tom continues to assemble the acoustic Slow Motion Soundtrack. Is it weird for me to say that it's comforting to see Tom being an Editor, singing Editors songs, when there's been such a chasm of unavoidable public inactivity? It makes the band a tangible thing again, certainly in my mind.
Every Editors album has a track that sits in solitude owing to the distraction and attention garnered by the more obvious songs like the singles etc. They are the compositions that the fans can recite in an instant, but that will never make it onto a Greatest Hits collection in their original state. Not unless it's as part of a Japanese deluxe edition, double pack with a photograph, extra track and a tacky badge as someone once said... Here's my own personal selection, yours will probably differ:-

The thing they all have in common is often when they are given life beyond a studio, they have a tendency to become amazing. They also benefit from a lack of performance fatigue on the part of their hosts, in a way that Papillon or Munich wouldn't be able to anymore. On the list I gave, two of the songs you see have only ever been played once, and At All Cost is one of them.
The studio take of At All Cost has much more of a redemptive gospel feel to it, and is longer by a full minute featuring more instrumentation. This video is the core exposed and presented in stark black and white light. Unlike the In Dream recording I feel like I can hear a little bit of Asleep by The Smiths in this one, but that might just be me? The most obvious omission here is La Goswell's backing vocals, which is something we've experienced before on Ocean of Night when it's been performed live, so it's not entirely unheard of. But that doesn't mean we don't miss her when she's not around :)
There's something much more filmic about this clip in comparison with everything that came before. Even though it's one shot, just like the others, it still feels professionally filmed. That coupled with the sound, those little echoes on "Don't let it get lost" make this an absolute gem for those in perpetual need of an Editors related dopamine hit. Thanks Tom.

I believe that this marked "Day 1" of the promotional campaign for album 4, The Weight of Your Love with Tom and Russell's appearing on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show on the 6th May 2013. The original broadcast contained the single airing for Ton of Love, as well as Munich, but they've been faded out in keeping with the policy at the Archive regarding sharing officially released material. So all you get here is the chat with the guys, and very interesting it is too.

What 14 seconds of fever-dreamed weirdness is this? You have Smith and Burrows in a rehearsal space, being filmed and directed by EdiBow. Tom does a mock "yada yada yada" introduction, switches on the S&B lights (and reacts with frightening enthusiasm), while Andy plays a burst of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas".
I get it, it's not strictly Editors so its inclusion here is tenuous, but it does raise interesting possibilities. Is there something else going on here that Smith and Burrows fans should be on the lookout for down the line? Rehearsal for an online live performance, perhaps? If they're both playing then it would make sense that they need Edith there to film the set. Are they teasing an early christmas treat? Time will tell.
