Fat White Family: Wild American Prairie. Live at The Windmill. April 2011.
Fat White Family play their first ever gig at The Windmill in April 2019.
This was the first time the then named Champagne Holocaust had fielded a full band and the first of many memorable gigs at Brixton's jewel in the crown music venue The WIndmill. Tim Perry, booker for the venue contacted me this week (2019) to date the Fats' first gig, so I checked it and came up with this gem.
Wild American Prairie had been a staple of theirs from the earliest acoustic gigs at Hank Dog's Easycome Acoustic nights, then at The Old Nun's Head, Nunhead. This is also the first time Lias had really unleashed the throbbing vein, aneurism-inducing performance that he became renowned for. It would be just one or two more gigs that would see him toting a guitar before Adam Harmer would pick it up and Lias would be liberated to develop his shrieking golomesque persona fully. Good to see Paul of Sound on sound, as he was to be at many of the great nights there.
For me, this cemented my obsession with the band and my now long-standing relationship with the venue, without which history would've been very different.
