The childfree movement refers to those who have chosen not to have children. Economic and social changes mean the childless are no longer treated as second-rate citizens. As a result, some people are questioning the expectation they will reproduce.
RTD goes to America to hear the stories of couples and singles who said no to parenthood. Leilani Münter, a vegan racing driver and childfree advocate, and her husband want to do their bit to end overpopulation and preserve biodiversity. Other couples talk about what poor parenting does to unwanted children.
Although they lack descendants, they have all found ways of giving themselves to others. So, are the childfree by choice selfish or civic?
It's been five years since the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists were gunned down, but this magazine's cartoons are still being used to justify terrorist attacks. The latest ones happened in a church in Nice at the end of October and involved the beheading of a school teacher in Conflans-Saint-Honorine near Paris two weeks before that. It's not just European artists who stand up for the right to free speech, however. Cartoonists in the Midle East do so too. For many of them, their work involves risking their lives on a daily basis. In 2015, our crew visited three Middle Eastern countries, to meet cartoonists and hear about their lives and the boundaries of acceptable satire in contemporary Middle Eastern societies.

The Nenets are an indigenous people who still live like their nomadic ancestors did centuries ago. To this day, they are constantly herding reindeer across the vast frozen tundra of the Russian Arctic. Children follow their parents from birth, learning everything about life in the tundra. But from autumn to spring, they live at boarding schools to get an education in towns, just like other Russian children.
While some Nenets children become accustomed to comfortable urban life, others miss home so much they run away and go back to their families on foot. The separation is also difficult for many parents, and some would prefer to have their kids nearby.
Hear what Nenets children and their parents have to say in our short doc. For more, check out the full video here - https://youtu.be/2JVWOd-DsAw

Since the start of the space age, artificial debris has built up around Earth’s orbit. Thousands of small objects and millions of tiny specks are now hurtling at breakneck speeds in the outer layers of the atmosphere. This space junk could destroy the satellites on which the world’s communications, and therefore its economy, depends.
RTD hears from NASA’s Don Kessler, who founded its Orbital Debris Program Office, Roscosmos specialists and ISS cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov about the dangers this poses to vessels and to international relations. So, can anything be done to clean up this hazardous space pollution?

The Bolshoi Ballet is probably the world’s leading dance company with two schools forging future ballet stars. One is in Moscow, and the other is in faraway Brazil! The Bolshoi ballet school in the remote city of Joinville was conceived as a grand social project for deprived children. Pupils, who are mostly from low-income families, train in a rigorous eight-year programme for free so they can get out of poverty and perform professionally.

- 9 May is the anniversary of the defeat of Nazi forces in WWII
- Many families in Russia and other countries of the former USSR have kept letters written by relatives who fought and died in the war
- These personal archives help us all to remember the real heroes of war and serve to remind us just how precious peace really is
- Today those very private archives continue to help relatives, bringing families together, helping the bereaved find closure and reuniting descendants who now live far apart.
The 9th of May is the anniversary of the great victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, known in Russia and other former Soviet states as the Great Patriotic War. The conflict claimed millions of lives, in the USSR, hardly any family was unaffected by it. Though many survived the privations and terror of war against all odds, thousands died defending their motherland. Today, their legacy lives on in their personal letters from the front, now diligently preserved by descendants and historians alike.
These letters reveal heart breaking stories of young lives lost, the horror of battle, surviving besieged cities and the notorious evil of concentration camps. The letters are not all about death and doom; many also speak of love, patriotism, courage and the preservation of hope, even in the most desperate of circumstances. They give a human face to the cold historical facts of war.
Historians and publishers are now seeking to make the letters available to the public, so that future generations will know and remember their ancestral heroes and appreciate how precious peace really is. Some of the letters have helped bring war-torn families back together; others forged ties between people from different countries and gave life to new friendships. Relatives have been able to identify the graves of their fallen relatives, which has helped them to find some closure.
Having learned more about family members who made the ultimate sacrifice in war, many resolved to take part in a national march and carry portraits of relatives who played a part in the great victory and to commemorate their lives and heroic deaths. Though their lives were cut short, surviving relatives are determined that their memories will live forever. They have become, “The Immortal Regiment”.

The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, also known as Transnistria, is wedged between Moldova and Ukraine. It parted ways with Moldova in 1990, after the Soviet Republic of Moldavia declared independence while taking steps to elevate one local culture above the others.
Those who fought in the war that followed in 1992 share their memories of the bloodshed. Transnistrian businessmen explain how they have managed to sell a local spirit on the European market. Future school teachers talk over their career options in their home country and further afield. Meanwhile, Pridnestrovia’s President Vadim Krasnoselsky makes the case for full international recognition of a country that is never going to give up its independence.
