I am late again, Canonical released Ubuntu 23.10 on October 12, 2023 and here I am a week later with my review. I am not trying to be the first, I like to take my time, dig into the distros and see how well they work and perform. There are so many new features in this release including some performance enhancements to the Linux Kernel as well as security enhancements to try and mitigate issues that may pose security risks. The AI Artwork this time is an ancient Greek Minitaur based on the one which was stationed at the center of the Labyrith on Crete. I added the double bladed ax, but that would not be accurate. a Minotaur was not a fighter, instead it would attack and devour humans as prey. I hope that isn't the intent of Canonical in the code name of Mantic Minotaur for this release. Introducing GNOME 42 GNOME 42 is the result of 6 month of work. The release provides significant new features, enhancements and minor improvements ** Released on March 23, 2022 Dark Style Preference A new dark style has been created which globally implements light or dark modes. This new style can be tailored on an app by app basis. The new setting is available in the Appearance panel of the GNOME Settings app. New Screenshot Experience The GNOME team has redesigned the screenshot feature, to allow it to take screenshots: full screen, windows or user selection box. The new tool also add the ability to record. The tool is automatically launched using the Print Screen key on your keyboard. GTK 4 and Libadwaita The GNOME team wanted to implement new capabilities in GTK4 and Libadwaita for better performance, to offer a modern style and implement new user interfaces GNOME has provided their standard appss which uses these new capabilities, however many other apps will not have caught up yet to the new GTK 4 or libadwaita Text Editor was previously made available as a preview release, and is now being recommended as the default GNOME text editor. This GTK 4 text editor has a slick UI and automatically saves your work, to prevent you from losing it. Console is a brand new terminal app. It has some nice UI touches, such as overlaid scroll bars, an overlaid size indicator, and a header bar that changes color to indicate when running as root. Performance Improvements GNOME 42 includes a valuable set of performance improvements, as the GNOME community continues its work to enhance system speed and resource usage. Videos uses a modern version of OpenGL widgets with hardware accelerated decoding, resulting in much smoother video playback. Other Improvements The styling of GNOME’s system UI has been updated. Many of these changes are subtle, and result in a more polished and elegant appearance. One of the longest running challenges I have faced is finding a Remote Desktop Application which allows me to access remote machines without having to reconfigure every aspect of the operating system I want to access or the one I want to use to access the screen displays of other machines. Yeah this has gone on for decades and I have used everything. Today I am evaluating a new one for me, called Rust Desk. There are some short comings with it, but all software has issues, its always a question of what can you live with, or work around. Rust Desk runs on almost everything Android, iOS, Linux, MacOS (yep M1/M2 as well), and Windows. And its written using Flutter so the user interface is consistent no matter what device you use. It also handles remote machines with multiple displays...and handles them in a very sensible manner. So lets take a look together and see what his no configuration remote desktop solution and see if it makes the grade.
