Georges Simenon is best known for the Inspector Maigret stories, but he published scores of other books. The Blue Room (La Chambre Bleue), from 1963, is believed to be one of his best.
The Blue Room is a tale of poisoned love in a village deep in rural France, where the sinister flourishes and suspicion and claustrophobia prevail.
Tony Falcone is an ordinary guy, a self-made man, the son of Italian immigrants. He sells and repairs agricultural machinery. He's a womaniser, but always returns at the end of the day to his wife and daughter in the village of Saint-Justin. Andrée Despierre is the daughter of a highly respected family. She used to live in the local chateau but now she's married to Nicolas, an affluent but sickly grocer. Tony and Andrée's passionate affair begins when he mends a puncture for her by the roadside.
Dramatised by Ronald Frame and Produced by Patrick Rayner

Ken Whitmore, born Hanley, Staffordshire, December 22, 1937, is a prolific author of radio plays, stage plays, short stories and poetry. His writing is characterised by black comedy and fantastic ideas, such as the complete disappearance of a man’s house, family and dog (One of Our Commuters is Missing) and the need for all mankind to jump in the air simultaneously (Jump! - a work which was produced on radio, stage, TV and as a book.)
His first radio play in 1974 was Haywire at Humbleford Flag and there swiftly followed a stream of high-quality radio plays, ending with The Final Twist (from a stage play written in collaboration with Alfred Bradley.)
Whitmore’s adaptations for radio are Going Under from the novel by the Russian Lydia Chukovskaya, a five-part adaptation of Brighton Rock by Graham Greene, and an eight part adaptation of Fame is the Spur by Howard Spring.
His published stage plays are Jump for Your Life, Pen Friends, La Bolshie Vita, The Final Twist and The Turn of the Screw, adapted from the story by Henry James.
Paul Donovan on TimesOnline quoted Whitmore as saying that his dearest wish was to write a drama that would stop people ironing.

Rachel Joyce The Man With Wings
Features a war-damaged man who wishes to fly, and a village boy, desperate for the return of his father.
It is 1947 and there is a gloomy and desolate feel to the small Gloucestershire village where young Jack Leach's boy lives.
It is a village almost entirely populated by women and children; the men have yet to return from the war - and many will never return.
Narrator: Ian McDiarmid
Mireille: Niamh Cusack
Man: Tom Goodman-Hill
Boy: Jo Joyce-Venables
Sister Mary: Kate Binchy
Mother: Emily Joyce
Neighbour: Alex Tregear
To this village comes a group of traveling nuns, who may or may not be from a religious community, but who set up a homestead in a deserted farmhouse. Then comes the man - back from the war - who is badly injured, but is nursed back to health by the women in the farmhouse. He is befriended in particular by Mireille, one of the women, and by the young boy, for whom he professes to have a secret. What this secret is, and why the man wishes to fly, is revealed as the play progresses. The boy then witnesses a scene that will live with him forever.
This epic story about faith, forbidden love, and the intoxicating power of the imagination has one foot in the poverty of post-war rural Britain, a place of bitter disillusionment that reflects part of our society today, and another in the world of the beauty where the inconceivable may just possibly happen.
Original Music by Lucinda Mason Brown
Produced by Gordon House
A Goldhawk Essential Production for BBC Radio 4
Afternoon Drama
First broadcast:
Thu 29th Mar 2012
14:15 on BBC Radio 4 FM
This charming production had the grown-up son of Jack Leach (Ian McDiarmid) looking back on his childhood, at a time in 1947 when life in his Gloucestershire village was spartan, to say the least. Rationing was still in full force; and very few of the men had returned from battle, leaving the community almost exclusively peopled by women and children.
