The duke reveals the questions that this international scientific project will seek to answer.
The International Geophysical Year was held to encourage scientists from across the world to work together to gather and share knowledge about the earth. The Duke of Edinburgh, as a Fellow of the Royal Society, presents an overview of the various experiments to be carried out. These include satellite technology, solar observation and oceanography. This was important as, by 1957, it had already been observed that the oceans were rising and the glaciers melting.
The International Geophysical Year ran from July 1, 1957, to December 31, 1958. During this year the USSR launched Sputnik 1 and the USA set up NASA.

This programme is much more than just a practical guide to making a shirt waister dress. There are as many fashion tips as sewing suggestions, an interview with a designer about how to achieve the couture look on a 'paper-pattern budget' and a frankly disturbing military-style catwalk show. Altogether this programme forms a revealing insight into the fashion priorities of 1967.
Examples of clothing designed by Mattli, who was famous for dresses with plunging necklines, are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Fashion Museum in Bath.

Fun, frolics and some wacky ways to spend the August bank holiday.
A round-up of unusual activities around the country, from a display of underwater cycling by naval frogmen in Chatham to a carthorse derby on the Sussex Downs in which the winner's cup is presented by champion jockey Gordon Richards. There is also footage of the famous Good quadruplets taking part in a tricycle race, lovely scenes from a sun-soaked Cornwall and less lovely rain at the Festival of Britain.
This item has incomplete sound.
Gordon Richards was knighted in the coronation honours in 1953, the first ever jockey to receive a knighthood. From 21,843 mounts, he rode 4,870 winners and was champion jockey 26 times.
The Good quadruplets were the first in the world to be delivered by caesarean section and were subject to media and public scrutiny for most of their childhood.

The Berlin Wall | A city divided between East and West by the Cold War
The Queen in Germany | State Visit to Germany: Berlin
HM Queen Elizabeth II visits West Berlin at the height of the Cold War.
CHANNEL | BBC 1
SYNOPSIS
Richard Dimbleby reports live from West Berlin on the historic visit there by the Queen and Prince Philip. This extract from the day's coverage features many shots of an open-topped car in the distance, but it also has an informative commentary by Dimbleby, who is clearly not a fan of the city's architecture. The report ends with the Queen's speech to a vast crowd in which she refers to her own German ancestry and praises the links between Britain and West Berlin.
DID YOU KNOW?
This was the first visit by a British monarch to Germany for over half a century, the last royal trip having been in 1909, when King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra travelled to Berlin. In one of his speeches there, the King expressed his desire 'to cement the relations of the two empires and so to ensure the maintenance of the peace of the world'. However, World War I started just five years later and subsequent British sovereigns officially ignored Germany until this tour by the Queen and Prince Philip.

How fashion dictates body shape and facial decoration.
In this episode of the fashion history series, Doris Langley Moore explores the odd correlation between the amount of facial hair on men and trends in covering up in women's fashion. We also get to see Benny Hill in various states of hirsuteness, and a young Vanessa Redgrave demonstrates early 20th-century use of face powder.
Jeremy Hawk, the third hirsute gentleman appearing with Benny Hill and Ron Moody, was a prolific actor who worked as straight man for Benny Hill, hosted the long-running 'Criss Cross Quiz' programme, appeared in West End comedies for almost 50 years, and made guest appearances in '2point4 Children' alongside his daughter, Belinda Lang.
