THEME: THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST
READINGS: Acts 10:34, 37-43/ Colossians 3:1-4/ John 20:1-9
Easter Sunday
Many countries across the world experienced the spectacular phenomenon of the eclipse of the sun on 29th March, 2006. There was complete darkness for about three minutes then the superiority of the light of the sun showed up again. This is symbolic of the resurrection of Christ (the Light of the world: John 8:12) who arose on the third day after his death. Remember that at the crucifixion of Christ our Light, darkness covered the whole land for three hours (Mark 15:33). The Easter Vigil Liturgy of the light, in which there is a bonfire and the lighting of candles, portrays how Christ, the Light of the world, conquered the world of darkness by his resurrection.
Jesus predicted that ‘the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again’ (Mark 8:31). When he said that he would rise again on the third day, the chief priests, Pharisees and scribes who knew the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) were worried. So they asked Pilate to seal the tomb of Jesus and position guards there (Matt. 27:62-66).

THEME: RECEIVING THE PRINCE OF PEACE
READINGS: Isaiah 11:1-10 / Romans 15:4-9 / Matthew 3:1-12
2nd Sunday of Advent
Several centuries before the birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ, a prophecy of Isaiah revealed some of His names: ‘Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace’ (Isaiah 9:6). This homily focuses on the last of these names: ‘Prince of Peace’.
What kind of peace, then, does the Saviour bring us? He brings us the serenity or harmony that is based on true justice and charity. Once again, the Prophet Isaiah, according to today’s first reading, gives us a vivid picture of this kind of peace:
The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb; the leopard shall lie down with the young goat; the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, and the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea (Isaiah 11:6-9).

THEME: THE SAVIOUR’S BIRTH
READINGS: Isaiah 52:7-10/ Hebrews 1:1-6/ John 1:1-18
Christmas Day
Whereas the fortunate shepherds of Bethlehem got to know of the birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ through the announcement by an angel, the chosen wise men were aided by a star. Despite the apparent difference in the channels of their knowledge, the shepherds and wise men had something in common – namely, it was by God’s favour or grace that they got to know of our Saviour’s birth.
Beloved, we did not hear an angel announce to us the Saviour’s birth nor were we led by a visible star to see Him, but we also have the grace of God – that which was common to both the shepherds and wise men. Thus, St. Paul writes: ‘Beloved, the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all’ (Titus 2:11; second reading of Christmas Night Mass).
Beloved, if our knowledge of the birth of Christ is by God’s grace (favour) and not by our own merits or efforts, then we should live soberly. This is affirmed, once again, by St. Paul: the grace of God trains ‘us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world’ (Titus 2:11-12).
Though this admonition of St. Paul applies to our whole Christian way of life, it is very crucial for the celebration of Christmas, the birth of Christ. The way many celebrate Christmas in our time is anything but soberness and godliness. In fact, for many people, Christmas season is when they get drunk and display all kinds of ungodliness.
Furthermore, the aggressive nature of modern commercialization seems to further relegate the spiritual value of Christmas to the background. For instance, some Christmas cards say nothing about Christ’s birth or even mention ‘Christmas’; they simply say, ‘Season’s greetings’. Where is Christ, the reason for the season in this case?

THEME: FORGIVENESS
READINGS: Sirach 27:30 – 28:7/ Romans 14:7-9/ Matthew 18:21-35
24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
A story or news item that went viral on social media in the past week is about one Sylvester Ofori, a 35-year old Ghanaian, who is the Head Pastor of Floodgates of Heaven International Ministries, in Florida, USA. Pastor Ofori has thousands of followers, with about 60,000 followers on his Facebook account. He and his 27-year wife, Barbara, were going through a divorce process less than 5 years after their wedding. Not willing to forgive the wife, Pastor Ofori went to her place of work one morning and shot her dead.
Whatever was the cause of the misunderstanding between the couple, genuine forgiveness would have made a big difference. An offence often creates anger and the feeling of revenge. To forgive, then means ‘to stop feeling angry with somebody who has done something to harm, annoy or upset you’ (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary).
An offence creates a gap or valley between people; and as long as the offence is not forgiven the gap or valley remains. Now, as a small gap or crack in a wall or a natural valley can widen with time, so the valley of un-forgiveness can get worse with time. This is obvious in the sad story of Pastor Ofori and his dead wife.
Un-forgiveness maintains a valley not only between us and our offender, but between us and God as well. On the other hand, when we forgive, a bridge is created not only between us and our offender but the gap between us and God is also bridged. Hence, today’s first reading, admonishes us: ‘Forgive your neighbor the wrong he has done, and then your sins will be pardoned when you pray’ (Sirach 28:2).

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Often when nations bid to host a sporting event, they also aspire to win the competition. Hence, the slogan, ‘host and win’. However, more often than not, teams of hosting nations do not emerge as winners. Even the football team of mighty Brazil could not win the World Cup they hosted in 2014. Why is this so? Ironically, it appears that the hustle and bustle of hosting such sporting events distracts the hosting nation from achieving its main goal of emerging as winners.
