How to Start a Production Company With Under $10,000: What Should You Buy?
How do you start a production company with under $10,000? What should you buy to get started? How do you get your production company started and start making money? We're going to talk about the essentials of starting a production studio and how to start your film company for under $10,000.
When starting a production company, choosing a camera package is crucial. You can't produce videos if you don't have a camera. When first starting a film company you don't have to spring for a high-end cinema camera. There are way more affordable options like the Canon C100 and Sony FS5 that still capture beautiful 1080p footage.
You'll need more than a camera to get a production company started. You'll need to budget in a small sound package, some general grip gear like c-stands and sandbags and a solid editing setup that can handle your footage. We have links below the equipment we recommend to stay under $10,000.
If you have any questions on the techniques used in this review video, please send a note in the comments. Thanks for watching How to Start a Production Company With Under $10,000: What Should You Buy?, in our Film Jams series!
This week we have 9 Short Film DO’s and DON’Ts. If you're looking for how to make a short film, we have some filmmaking tips for you. Making a short film can be difficult. Whether you want to learn to improve your filmmaking skills or you're shooting your first short, we have a few tips and tricks you don't want to miss!
1. DO – Start with a bang!
It doesn’t have to be an actual bang, but something exciting that engages the audience right away.
2. DON’T – Show the Mundane. We don’t need to see your character wake up, floss, brush their teeth, park their car, or any other boring stuff unless it serves the story or has a unique, funny or dramatic twist.
3. DO Minimize Exposition. In a short film, there’s no time for back stories, flashbacks, soliloquies.
Minimize your exposition.
4. DON’T say “Yes, no, goodbye, hello.
This is boring “dead dialogue” that wastes time in a short film. Find more creative ways to say these things. Or cut them out all-together.
5. DON’T – Be Beige. Use colors, textures and patterns in your backgrounds, in your locations, and in your costumes
Sometimes a gallon of colorful paint can liven up a room or a set. You can also use lighting to add color to your film as well.
6. DO – Use Interesting Locations. this is important. If your characters are talking in a living room, can you make it a café/restaurant or maybe they are outside instead ? Having interesting locations pulls your viewers into the story and Ups your production value.
7. DO – Use Costumes, Vehicles, Props to Reveal Info.
If your character drives a vehicle, make it match their character – it will reveal a lot about them.
Costumes, vehicles and Props are a great way to “get” who a character is before they even say a word.
8. DON’T – Bore us with credits. Especially opening credits. Short films play much better at festivals without an elaborate opening credit sequence. shorts should be short.
For festivals, try making a version where you even speed up your END credits. People will love you.
9. DO – Make Your Characters Diverse.
Short stories should be about interesting unique characters.
Old and young. All sizes. All races. Find “interesting” looking actors. Not everybody has to be 20 and beautiful.
Some of the best short films tell stories about unusual characters.
Cast people who fit the roles, and be diverse!
Hope these tips are helpful if you’re getting ready to make a short film.
Keep in mind when making a short film. It’s a short. If you want to play at festivals, an average 8 minute film often will get in over a great 20 minute film.
Get right to the point. Hook your audience. And don’t say hello, yes, no or goodbye. Just end it.

What are some things that film school won’t teach you? We’re often asked if it’s worth it to go to film school, so Film Jams is highlighting 5 filmmaking tips that weren’t learned in the classroom. What do you learn in film school anyway? How to become a filmmaker? Let's find out!
There’s a big difference between learning how to do things in a controlled classroom environment versus going out into the wild and making your own film. Our team learned these tips the hard way, so you don’t have to! Things you probably won’t learn in film school. Losing hard drives, losing money to shady distributors, and losing locations are just some of the things that you may have to deal with that film school won’t prepare you for. Let's check out some film school secrets, you may not learn in the classroom.
One thing that was a big help in getting our last film distributed was going to film markets and talking to sales agents. We met a film sales agent when we attended Cannes two years ago, who told us that that year they were looking for family-friendly, holiday films. Because of that, we wrote and shot “Elfette Saves Christmas” our last feature film that's been distributed around the globe. Knowing what films are more marketable can be a major leg up if you are looking to sell or distribute a film.
Another filmmaking for beginners tip is to set a date for filming, even if you may not have everything entirely planned out. Sometimes it's hard to self motivate, but giving yourself a deadline can greatly help get your momentum going not only for you, but your crew as well. Even if you don’t have all your locations, or the script entirely polished, get a date on the calendar to get you moving towards a goal.
Another way to motivate yourself and create new content is entering a 48-Hour Film Contest or another short film contest. The 48 hour is fun and beneficial because you'll have a completed movie after just one weekend. 48 hour films are their own little film schools of trial by fire!
Making local films in smaller cities is another tip for filmmaking. Often times smaller cities offer incentives for films to be made there. Their crews and businesses may be more supportive than larger cities like LA or New York. If you would like to learn more about the local incentives in St. Petersburg, FL, where we are based, visit https://www.filmstpeteclearwater.com/local-incentives
Check out the rest of the tips and things film school won’t teach you in our video!
So should I go to Film School? If you have any questions on the techniques used in this filmmaking tutorial video, please send us a note in the comments. Thanks for watching 5 Things FILM SCHOOL Won't Teach You, in our Film Jams series!

The short film was made entirely in 48 hours. If you've thought about participating in the 48 Hour Film Project, this video will give you a BTS look at how to make a film in 48 Hours.
The 48 Hour Film Project is a global contest that challenges local filmmakers to produce films in under 48 hours. Our genre was: Disaster Film. Check out how to shoot a 48 hour film.
The Film Jams crew worked two sleepless nights and had blast. We ended up bringing home 11 awards, including best film, best director, best cinematography, best editing, audience choice and best actor and actress! Why are cinema lenses so expensive? This week, we have a comparison with the Cooke S4 lenses VS Rokinon EF lenses in our Cooke S4 lenses review. What's the difference between expensive cinema lenses vs Rokinon? Using Rokinon vs Cooke lenses is a difference of $350 or $20,000 per lens! So check out our in-depth Cooke lens test to see what all that cinema lens footage is about.
In our Cooke S4 Lens test and Rokinon EF lens test, we did a Focus and Color test, a Lens Flare test, a Bokeh test, and more! You may be pretty surprised by our findings from comparing the Cooke S4 Cine Lens to the Rokinon Lenses in this Cooke S4 Lens review. Some of our favorite movies like Harry Potter, Casino Royale, Hugo, and John Wick have been shot on the Cooke S4 lenses, so they’re definitely no slouch!
We shot our Rokinon vs Cooke Lens review on the Arri Alexa Mini in 3.2k. So, make sure to bump that resolution up to see that sweet Cooke S4 lens footage and Rokinon Cine Lens footage. The difference was not as big as we thought in the Cooke cinema lens comparison. This week we take a look at how to take better photos on your iPhone in our iphone photo tutorial! Your DSLR camera may not be handy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take a great picture with these iPhone camera tips. With smart phone cameras getting better every year, we'll show you how to shoot better photos with iPhone or your smart phone. So check out our beginner’s guide to iPhone photography.
This video on iPhone photo tips will show you how to plan a shot better, take the photo better, and give you some editing tips. We used an iPhone X, but many of these tips also apply to Android phone photos as well. In this iPhone camera tutorial, we'll also share some of our favorite photo apps for retouching photos on your phone.
One of the best iPhone photo hacks is using the manual exposure feature, which is available on most newer iPhones but is a little hard to find. Being able to control your exposure can elevate your phone photography and allow you to customize the image better based on your style. This option also allows you to fine tune the focus and lock it.
Lighting in general is very important to taking better photos on your iPhone, and you should plan your photography shoot around where the light is and what it is doing. For instance, taking photos during sunrise or sunset, or “golden hour”, is usually best as the light is the most flattering and soft. Windows are also a big factor in photography, as you don’t want to take photos in front of windows and completely throw the exposure off. However if you take a photo next to a window, you can use the light to your advantage. Let us know if our camera tutorial helped you learn how to take iPhone photos like a pro!
Do you have other iPhone photo pro tips? Let us know in the comments below!
If you have any questions on the techniques used in this review video, please send a note in the comments. Thanks for watching How to Shoot BETTER PHOTOS with iPhone Camera (Photography Tutorial), in our Film Jams series!
