British Airways vs Virgin Atlantic - Which is the better airline?
In this video I compare British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
I'll take a quick look at the routes, cabins, service, food, loyalty benefits, customer service, and brand.
These opinions are my own based on flying with both airlines over the past twenty years.
I've flown British Airways on long haul and short haul, for both business and pleasure.
I've also flown Virgin Atlantic for holiday flights to the Caribbean.
In the case of BA I've flown in World Traveller, World Traveller Plus, and Club seats.
In the case of Virgin I've flown in Premium Economy.
First, the routes.
BA have a much bigger fleet and fly to many destinations in Europe, as well as long haul flights to most continents.
So in terms of reach Virgin can't compete, and that does have a bearing on the loyalty program since you can't use Virgin for short breaks in Europe.
That means you can neither earn any rewards nor spend any on short haul flights with Virgin.
Cabins and Seating
As you're probably aware Virgin have just three cabin types; Economy, Premium Economy, and Upper Class.
Although recently they introduced a tiered Economy class.
BA on the other hand have four; Economy, Premium Economy, Business, and First.
These are known within the airline as World or Euro Traveller, World Traveller Plus, Club World or Europe, and First.
So Virgin's Upper Class is on a par with BA's Club Class.
I'm not going to into the details of seat and pitch measurements as there are many websites that do just that far better than I can.
What I would say is that Club Class on BA is a bit strange.
They have seats side by side in opposite directions and this causes a number of complaints from both passengers and cabin crew.
If you're traveling alone and allocated a window seat in Club you can find yourself facing the tail of the aircraft.
You'll be separated from the person in the adjacent seat (facing forward) by a screen that has to be down for take-off and landing.
If that person decides to stretch out and sleep on the flight you'll have to step over their legs to reach the aisle.
Likewise, the cabin crew have to lean over them to pass any food or drink to you.
Premium on both airlines is fine for long haul, except perhaps when it comes to food.
BA's food in Premium is inferior that of Virgin. I don't understand how they can get something like that wrong after all this time.
Service from the cabin crews on both airlines is mixed.
It can't be easy being a flight attendant, especially when you see the way some passengers behave and their standards of hygiene.

The Goodwood Revival never disappoints and there are always lots of reasons why I return each year but to make the most of it does take some planning. Whether your main interest is motor sport, classic cars or bikes, vintage fashion, or historic aircraft then there’s plenty to see.
Here are my essential tips for enjoying the Goodwood Revival and taking away happy memories that will linger right through winter until the following year.
What is the Goodwood Revival?
It’s a revival of the motor racing that used to take place on the circuit around the airfield but it’s so much more than that too. It’s a celebration of many of the best in motor cars, aircraft, motor bikes, fashion, design, music, and dance of the 1940s, 1950s, and the 1960s.
The airfield was called RAF Westhampnett during World War II and it was the home of several squadrons. From here Douglas Bader took off and made his last flight before being shot down and going into captivity. Near the Goodwood Aero Club you will see a bronze statue of Sir Douglas Bader in a likeness contemporary with the months he spent there.
After the War the perimeter track was converted into a motor racing circuit and racing continued there until 1966 when the track was closed. Racing returned in 1998 when the first Goodwood Revival was held and it’s been repeated every year since.
When and where is the Goodwood Revival?
The Revival is held on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on the first or second weekend in September every year. It takes place at the Goodwood motor racing circuit and aerodrome just north of Chichester, West Sussex, England. You can arrive by road (A27) or rail (Chichester Station), or you can simply fly into the airfield (with prior permission from the organisers).

Crop circles are patterns that appear or are created in crop fields. The term "crop circle" was coined when most of those that appeared were circles of flattened corn, wheat, barley, or some other crop.
As the years passed these circles developed into complex geometric patterns and pictograms.
Crop circles have appeared for tens and perhaps hundreds of years all over the world but it was the proliferation and variety in those that appeared in Southern England during recent decades that has created a huge upsurge of interest in this phenomenon.
A crop circle industry has been generated. They have sparked the interest of amateur and professional researchers, the media, and the Ministry of Defence. Books, films, and lecture tours are available for anyone wanting to know more. I have included some links to useful websites in the description area below this video.
Who is creating them? Well, you tell me. Personally, I don't buy the story that they are all made by hoaxers and artists. There is more to this than that. There is ample scientific evidence that suggests other forces are at work.
Let's just say non human intelligences may be involved.
But enough of that for now. Here are my suggestions for how to use a drone to capture images and film.
First of all we have to adhere to The Law and make safety our top priority.
You can't fly over the land without the land owner's permission and you can't fly higher than 400 feet.
So your first task is to obtain permission to fly over the field. This may involve a certain amount of detective work either online or in the vicinity of the crop circle. Ask in the nearest shop or pub, or stop and ask anyone who looks like they live and work in the area.
It shouldn't be too difficult to find out who the farmer is as he or she will probably already be alerted by the buzz of activity that the crop circle generates.
The land owner may also make themselves known as they might spot the opportunity to make some money charging curious visitors a small fee for entering the field.

2020 Lessons Learned. What do you want in 2021?
If a psychic had told us in December 2019 where we would be in December 2020 people would have rolled their eyes and scrolled on to other distractions.
Yet here we are in a world utterly transformed, and it’s not over yet.
I’m not going to discuss the various theories and opinions that form a spectrum of belief ranging from believing everything the government and the BBC tell us at one end, and the scandemic/plandemic designed years ago to usher in the Great Reset and the 4th Industrial Revolution, at the other.
The truth, if we ever are to know it, is probably somewhere on that spectrum between the two extremes and there are likely to be elements that are true at both extremes and others which are outright lies.
What should be obvious to everyone is the importance of human contact, physical interaction, conversation, debate, stories, jokes, joy, and all the other healthy things that go on between people when they are physically close to one another.
More and more of our time is being spent online. I’m caught in the same trap. I make a living out of it and working from home, for me, isn’t unusual.
But as a network engineer I am intrigued by the growing amount of scientific evidence for what was once dismissed as the philosophical musings by fringe thinkers or the vague ramblings of spaced out gurus.
That is, the idea that we are all one.

Powerfuel Portland Energy Recovery Facility - Need
Despite a rise in recycling rates, the UK has a waste problem.
We still landfill over 14 million tonnes of waste every year which is suitable for energy recovery facilities.
This is not a sustainable solution and results in far higher greenhouse gas emissions. Further, in 2019/20 the UK exported around 2.5 million tonnes of RDF used in energy recovery facilities overseas. The South West region alone exported 280,000 tonnes of RDF out of the UK which could more sustainably be used closer to home. Zooming-in closer to home, the Dorset Waste Plan states that the total waste arisings across the County were 1.6 million tonnes per year in 2015, and rising.
Non-hazardous waste was 862,000 in 2018, and the Council project that will grow to over 1 million tonnes in the next few years.
Of that at least 320,000 tonnes would be suitable for use at the facility. As much as everyone desires more reuse and recycling and a fully circular economy, there will be ample waste left over after recycling in Dorset for the foreseeable future.
Dorset has no solution of its own for residual waste and currently exports all of its left over waste out of the county where it is either landfilled or used as a fuel (where the power benefits those other locations).
Landfilled waste generates landfill gas, only some of which is captured.
Methane is over 25 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than C02.
This facility would be the most sustainable solution for Dorset waste. Had it been in operation over the last few years we expect that the facility would have saved the County around £2.5m in landfill costs annually. Instead of exporting waste abroad or to other counties to be dumped in the ground Powerfuel Portland will use up to 202,000 tonnes of the waste to generate low carbon energy for use locally, replacing the use of fossil fuels such as gas. Because of these clear sustainability benefits the Environment Agency have recently accepted that Energy Recovery Facilities like Powerfuel Portland falls within the scope of the UK Government's Green Recovery policy to “build back better” from C-19.

Hello, my name is Ben Lovegrove and here is this week's round-up of aviation news from high altitude to below 400 feet. Each week I bring you selected stories in the worlds of airlines, flight training, aviation history, drones and UAV.

1. Drones are being used in an increasing number of ways and just three of those methods show their versatility.
Volunteer drone pilots as well as those operated by the emergency services have been used to spot people, pets, and livestock in need of rescue in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. They will also be used by insurance companies who need to inspect the extent of damage to property.
In Australia, drones fitted with artifical intelligence will be used to spot sharks near beaches. They will provide live feed to the drone pilot and the AI can identify sharks more accurately and quickly than the human eye.
Another way in which drones are being used is in the process of gathering data during forest fires. It's well known that water bombing aircraft, both propeller driven and jet, are used to fight fires but before they can fly data must be gathered.
If the fire and the local climate cause an inversion over the fire then they may not fly at all. Fixed wing UAV are being tested to fly through smoke to gather data that will enable the water bombing to be more accurate.
2. According to AOPA the drop-out rate among trainee helicopter pilots is as high as 80%. It's a sad fact that the majority of student helicopter pilots give up before they complete the training and obtain a Private Pilots Licence.
This is attributed to the fact that many are unsure of the training path and do not receive the all necessary guidance. If you're a student pilot or an instructor you might have an opinion on this so add your feedback in the comments section below this video.
It is thought that student pilots are unsure of how to evaluate all the options open to them and don't make timely and correct decisions in order to maintain the contininuity in their training.

1 INTRODUCTION.
a) The Commander of an aircraft is responsible for the safety and wellbeing of his passengers and the law requires a pre-flight safety briefing in any UK registered aircraft. This applies to ALL aircraft, including gliders, balloons, microlights and helicopters, as well as conventional’ aeroplanes.
b) Article 88 of the Air Navigation Order (ANO) 2009 requires the Commander of an aircraft registered in the UK to take all reasonable steps to ensure that before take-off all passengers are familiar with the position and method of use of emergency exits, safety belts and harnesses, lifejackets and other emergency equipment. He/she must also ensure that passengers are
instructed on the actions to take in an emergency.
c) Although the guidance in this Leaflet is comprehensive and too long to be used on every flight, it is up to the pilot to decide what is
appropriate on each occasion. He/she should use simple language, as some words (e.g. leading edge, trailing edge, port and starboard) may not be understood by all passengers. Remember, half the UK population have never flown.
d) Passengers in light aircraft may find it helpful to have a pre-flight discussion on the differences from larger aircraft (see section 7).
