Legislation proposed to ban TikTok in USA over security fears
A handful of American lawmakers, including Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, announced bipartisan legislation on Tuesday that would ban China's social media app TikTok in the U.S.
The move adds pressure on the video-sharing app's owner, ByteDance, amid fears among some in the U.S. that the app could be used to spy on Americans or censor content.
According to a news release from Rubio's office, the legislation would block all transactions from any social media company in or under the influence of a "country of concern," like China and Russia.
“The federal government has yet to take a single meaningful action to protect American users from the threat of TikTok," the Florida senator released in a statement . "This isn’t about creative videos – this is about an app that is collecting data on tens of millions of American children and adults every day.”
The divorce rate in the United State dropped about 20% over the last decade, according to data from the latest U.S. Census.
But what about during the COVID-19 pandemic? Did the added stress affect marriages? Have divorce rates actually risen since the coronavirus entered our lives?
To find out, KING 5 combed through the last 20 months of caseloads in Washington State’s Superior Courts where divorces are processed.
We found dissolutions, which is the legal term for divorce filings, did go up in Washington state in spring 2021. But that's probably not because of the stress of the pandemic.
"There's a very pronounced seasonal pattern to divorce,” explained Julie Brines, a sociologist at the University of Washington with a Ph.D. from Harvard. “[Divorce filing] happens to peak in March, pretty consistently throughout the country, and then dips fairly dramatically in April. There also tends to be another peak in August and September, right after the summer vacation period."

Portland residents fear being assaulted or encountering people experiencing a mental health crisis while walking around town, according to a recent survey, but those Fox News spoke with had mixed opinions about safety in the city.
"I walk around all the time and during the day I feel fine," said Amber, who recently moved to Portland from California. "I still keep my wits about me and I'm cautious, but I don't feel like I'm really in any danger."

Discarded surgical masks strewn along the sidewalk aptly represent COVID-19’s lasting legacy. The federal medical bureaucracy’s response to the pandemic has resulted in a wasteland of lost economic and educational opportunities, psychologically damaged children, terminally lonely nursing home residents, and lives lost to suicide, illicit drug overdoses, and missed diagnoses.
Thanks to the lockdowns, 140,104 businesses were temporarily closed and 97,966 were permanently closed by September 2020 according to a Yelp survey. Significantly, more than half of these were local small businesses—and small businesses employ nearly half of all American workers. Predictably, the workers who were most affected were not the professionals pulling in a paycheck while working from home. They were the working-class folks whose jobs the bureaucrats considered non-essential.
The disruption of children’s education and socialization will haunt us for years to come in terms of earning potential and mental health. The central planners punished children for months although the mortality in children from COVID-19 is roughly equivalent to that of influenza year to year. Moreover, CDC data shows that attending school or child care was not associated with having positive SARS-CoV-2 test results.

Hold onto your mouse ears, gentlemen, because the Walt Disney Co. has just begun a massive "spring cleaning" of their workforce. The House of Mouse is showing 7,000 employees the door, which is a whopping 4.2% of their U.S. based workers. I guess there's not so much magic in the kingdom anymore, huh?
Bob Iger, Disney's CEO and the man with impeccable timing, made this grand announcement during a February earnings call. The layoffs will help the company save a cool $2.5 billion in noncontent costs. With savings like that, maybe they can afford to build a new Disneyland... in space!
Turns out, this was Iger's first call since his triumphant return as CEO, after his "apprentice" Bob Chapek got the boot last November. A modern-day Mufasa and Scar story, perhaps?
In a memo sent to the soon-to-be-unemployed, Iger let them know the cuts would wrap up by the end of spring. And just like a Disney movie, this story has a twist! Even ESPN, one of Disney's main divisions, isn't safe from the corporate guillotine. Stephen A. Smith, a big name at the network, quipped that even he might be on the chopping block. But, let's be real - it's probably the little guys who'll feel the pinch.
On the bright side, Disney's streaming portfolio, including ESPN+, is expected to stop hemorrhaging money by 2024. So, here's to hoping the remaining employees can weather the storm and keep the magic alive. Or, you know, find jobs elsewhere.

This past August, John DiLorenzo, one of Portland’s most prominent attorneys, decided he wanted something done about the homeless encampment on Southwest 12th Avenue and Southwest Taylor Street.
The historic apartment building he co-owns, The Gentry, was just across the street. DiLorenzo said his tenants had complained about gunshots and drug deals at the camp all summer long.
So had nearby property and business owners, who were filing a deluge of complaints to any city official they could find. The owner of a diner a block to the east said she had called the police twice in two days, the second time for a woman possibly overdosing and flailing on the cement “like a fish.” Representatives for the Medical Dental Building on Southwest 11th Street had taken to reporting the camp to the city’s online portal weekly, sometimes daily, over their frustrations at a sidewalk littered with trash and needles.

Police raided the West Burnside psychedelic mushroom shop Shroom House early morning, seizing evidence and arresting multiple people, and putting an end to one of the city’s biggest holiday-season attractions.
Shroom House has been operating since Oct. 24, violating federal and state laws governing the use of psychedelic mushrooms in Oregon. That hasn’t deterred Portlanders, who lined up for over six hours on many days this month to purchase psychoactive fungi. A small queue formed this morning in the pouring rain before being told by a reporter that the store had been raided.
Portland Police Bureau spokesman Sgt. Kevin Allen confirmed the raid to WW early this morning.
The shop’s likely owner, 32-year-old Steven Tony Tachie Jr., was booked in jail at 4:19 am this morning on charges of money laundering and manufacturing or delivering a Schedule I controlled substance near a school. Police also arrested Jeremiahs Francis Geronimo, 32, and booked him on similar charges.
Victor B. Fabela, 25, and Ivan Mametyev, 38, were issued criminal citations for delivery of psilocybin, Portland police said. More than $13,000 in cash and “a large amount of suspected psilocybin products,” were seized during the 1 am raid by officers with the bureau’s Narcotics and Organized Crime Unit.
Two senior prosecutors with the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office assisted with the raid, an office spokeswoman said.

In a recent analysis, it has been observed that the city of Seattle, which had previously cut its police budget, is now providing substantial raises to law enforcement officers. This shift comes after significant public outcry and rising concerns over safety in the city.
Three years ago, Seattle experienced intense demonstrations, leading to the establishment of the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) after police withdrew from the area. The situation escalated, and the city eventually faced severe safety issues. In November of that year, the city council decided to reduce the police budget by 20%. However, this decision has since faced considerable backlash from the community.
A majority of Seattle residents have expressed opposition to defunding the police, citing increased crime and a sense of insecurity. As a result, the city council, now more moderate, has approved a substantial pay increase for police officers. Starting salaries will now exceed $100,000, and officers will receive significant retroactive pay raises.

The retail landscape in several Democrat-run cities is changing as a spike in crime and shoplifting forces stores to close their doors. Among the latest casualties are four Target stores, which will shutter by May due to poor financial performance. Corporate representatives have attributed the closures to factors such as limited foot traffic and parking, but deeper analysis points to a more insidious issue: rampant shoplifting.
The surge in crime, which is affecting not only Target but also other retailers like Walmart, Walgreens, and Aldi, is taking a significant toll on businesses. These closures leave many communities without essential goods and services, contributing to a so-called "retail apocalypse." While some businesses have blamed inflation and the rise of online shopping, experts argue that this doesn't explain the situation fully, as other Target stores continue to operate successfully.
The correlation between store closures and the political climate in cities like Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. raises questions about the effectiveness of their crime prevention strategies. As more businesses close, community members are left with fewer options, and local economies suffer. While corporate representatives may be hesitant to admit the problem outright, the reality is that many of these stores are closing because they cannot cope with the financial burden caused by shoplifting and other criminal activities.
As businesses continue to grapple with these challenges, it remains to be seen whether city officials can address the rising crime rates and create safer environments for both retailers and customers.

Tiffany Henyard, the Supervisor of Thornton Township, is under fire after reportedly charging over $16,400 in taxpayer funds for what appeared to be a political campaign event. Held under the guise of a community event, Henyard’s name was prominently featured across event branding, including food boxes and entertainment materials. A Freedom of Information Act request uncovered expenses, such as bouncy houses, golf carts, and payroll for township employees, all funded by public money. Critics argue that these expenses violate Article 8, Section 1 of the Illinois Constitution, which prohibits the use of public resources for campaign purposes. However, despite the ethical concerns, it’s doubtful that Henyard will face legal consequences, as she has evaded similar allegations in the past. Residents and watchdog groups are calling for an investigation and reimbursement of the misused funds.
