October 9, 2009 – David T. Beito – The Scott Horton Show – Episode 1002
David T. Beito, professor of history at the University of Alabama and editor of the HNN blog Liberty and Power, discusses his book Black Maverick: T. R. M. Howard’s Fight for Civil Rights and Economic Power (co-authored with his wife Linda Royster Beito), how a Howard speech probably inspired Rosa Parks’ catalyzing civil disobedience, his beginnings as a Seventh Day Adventist advocate for prohibition, how Howard and Booker T. Washington’s advocacy of economic self-sufficiency helped the Civil Rights movement and the reality of the very near-past of the totalitarian Jim Crow South.

Eric Garris, founder and director of Antiwar.com, discusses the highly restrictive Gaza blockade that subjects 1.5 million residents to collective punishment for electing Hamas, Israel's surprisingly violent attack on the aid flotilla after allowing half of the previous attempts to pass through, the timid official US response (amid a chorus of international condemnation) to Israel's killing of humanitarian aid volunteers and why Israel has likely lost its key alliance with Turkey.

Cato’s Doug Bandow joins Scott again to discuss the situation in North Korea. According to Bandow the red line Trump has created for North Korea is worrisome, but he doesn’t believe it’s a repeat of the lead-up to the Iraq War—Bandow’s greater concern is that the Trump administration will make a major blunder. Bandow believes that Donald Trump’s approach to foreign policy is based on his feelings—which vary—rather than any coherent strategy. Bandow then explains why he thinks claims that North Korea can hit the east coast of the United States with a nuclear weapon may be premature, but that is certainly where things are headed. Lastly Bandow details what he would do to achieve peace with North Korea.
Doug Bandow is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute and a regular contributor at Forbes Magazine, the National Interest, and elsewhere. He’s on Twitter @Doug_Bandow.

John Feffer, co-director of Foreign Policy In Focus at the Institute for Policy Studies, discusses the China-Phillipines fight over natural resources in the South China Sea; how China weakened its international legal position by signing the UN Law of the Sea treaty, ceding historical territorial claims to a new “exclusive economic zone” standard; US interest in protecting shipping lanes, especially for oil tankers; how collective security agreements seem like a good idea – until a world war breaks out over a minor squabble; and planning Pentagon and defense contractor make-work projects (before big budget cuts come due) in a new “Pacific Pivot” policy.

Scott talks with Bjorn Handeen, a long-time listener who is now the Idaho Republican Party Region 1 Chairman. The two talk about Handeen’s efforts to translate his knowledge of American foreign policy into results by focusing on local politicians. Unlike some of the big names in today’s Congress, politicians on the county and state levels are often totally uninformed about international issues, which can make them relatively open-minded if only you’re able to get in their ear. Handeen says you’ll be surprised how much access you’ll get to local legislators if you just start showing up. They talk about when democratic institutions can be an effective tool in the non-interventionist effort. And they also look back and reflect on Scott’s early interviews.
