Final Fantasy XI #029, Bastok Mission 3-2: To the Forsaken Mines

Previously, Heorot did Bastok Mission 3-1: "The Four Musketeers". He went to the Pashhow Marshlands northeast of the Konschtat Highlands. In Beadeaux, he helped the Mythril Musketeers make a dent in the Copper Quadav population. Now, he will work on the next Bastok mission.
Heorot resumes at his Mog House in Bastok. He checks his delivery box for a tidy sum of gil. Then, he heads out to the Bastok Mines.
Bastok Mines (time 1:30):
A stack of Earth Crystals did not sell, so Heorot puts them back up for sale on the auction house.
After trading a crystal to Crying Wind, I.M., Heorot talks to Rashid at H-10. He takes on Mission 3-2: "To the Forsaken Mines". The mission is to go to the Gusgen Mines in the Konschtat Highlands and bring back a sample of the rare ore reported to be found there. Heorot can talk to a Galka named Davyad for additional information. The material is a chunk of Glocolite.
In an upper-level house at K-6, Heorot talks to Davyad the Galka. A special monster lives in one of the pools of groundwater in Gusgen. Heorot must draw the monster out with some Hare Meat.
Hare Meat can be acquired from hares in numerous locations, such as the Wadi Hares in Dangruf Wadi. Fortunately, Heorot has some in storage. He heads to his Mog House.
Mog House (time 7:48):
Heorot withdraws a slice of Hare Meat from storage. Then, he heads back out to the Bastok Mines.
Bastok Mines (time 8:19):
Heorot trades his Chariot Band to Crying Wind, I.M., at H-9 to get it recharged.
At I-9, Heorot uses the Survival Guide to teleport to the Survival Guide in Gusgen Mines in the Zulkheim region.
Gusgen Mines (time 9:36):
Before progressing into the mines, Heorot examines the Grounds Tome at H-9. He accepts the Page 1 individual training to defeat 6 members of the skeleton family.
Heorot heads down into the mines and goes east. Along the way, he takes out Ghouls for the individual training.
At J-7 in the east, Heorot finds a ??? point at a groundwater pool. However, a dangerous notorious monster called Smothered Schmidt emerges. Smothered Schmidt spawns here soon after midnight Vana'diel Time. This is NOT the monster for the quest, which turns out to be a good thing, because Heorot has to run before he is well done.
At I-9, Heorot finds the exit to Oldton Movalpolos.

Heorot rests up before returning to Gusgen Mines.

Previously, Heorot began leveling as Thief in East Sarutabaruta and Valkurm Dunes. He reached Level 24. Now, he will continue leveling as Thief in Pashhow Marshlands and Rolanberry Fields.
Heorot resumes in his Mog House in Bastok. In his delivery box, he gets back his Aketon, which did not sell on the auction house. He heads outside.
Bastok Mines (time 1:19):
At the auction house, Heorot puts his Aketon back up for sale. Hopefully, it'll sell some time!
Then, he uses the Survival Guide at I-9 to teleport to Pashhow Marshlands, Zulkheim.
Pashhow Marshlands (time 2:35):
Heorot arrives at the Outpost at K-6. He hunts some assorted monsters in the northeast of the marshlands until he reaches Level 27 as Thief.
Then, he exits northeast at K-4 to Rolanberry Fields.
Rolanberry Fields (time 17:18):
Heorot starts at H-14 in the south. He uses the Field Manual nearby. He undertakes the Page 4 individual training to defeat 6 Berry Grubs and 2 members of the Quadav family per training regime. He sets out and targets these monsters.
Eventually, Heorot reaches Level 36 as Thief.
When he is done, he uses the Survival Guide at G-6 to return to Bastok Mines.
Bastok Mines (time 59:43):
At the Chocobo Stables, Heorot visits Neigepance and sells off some loot. Afterwards, he goes to the residential area.
Mog House (time 1:03:42):
Heorot logs off. Next time, he will continue training as Thief.

Previously, I started the game and created my protagonist, Davilas. After Phineas Welles revived him from suspended animation, Davilas landed in the Emerald Vale Region on Terra 2 ... and squashed the smuggler he was supposed to meet, Captain Hawthorne. Oops! He started the main quest "Stranger in a Strange Land". Davilas found Hawthorne's ship, the Unreliable, but it requires a power regulator. Then, he trekked to the town of Edgewater. Just outside town, he met Silas and started the task quest "A Small Grave Matter". In town, Davilas met the town leader, Reed Tobson. He started the main quest "Comes Now the Power" and gained a companion, a repair specialist named Parvati. Now, the party will explore Edgewater.
Edgewater:
The party resumes in the reception hall of the Saltuna Cannery in the north of Edgewater. They head into the cannery's main working area and start poking around. There is a Spacer's Choice vending machine that sells some goods. Plus, if your Hack skill is 20 or higher, you can sell items to a vending machine. To buy restricted items, you need a high enough reputation with the vending machine's faction or a Hack skill of 40 or higher. There is a lot of loot to find, but taking most of it counts as stealing.
On a catwalk above the canning area, the party talks to Phyllis Granger. They collect her gravesite fees for "A Small Grave Matter". Talking to her further triggers conversation about the disturbing way things are done in this colony.
If this cannery cans Saltuna, why are there dead Sprats all over the place? Something fishy—or worse yet, NOT fishy—is definitely going on here.
The party begins exploring the rest of Edgewater. A lot of the items found outside are free to take.
There is a chapel by the town's eastern gate. Within, the party talks to Vicar Max for the main quest "Comes Now the Power". This satisfies the optional objective to talk to him. Upon extended conversation, Vicar Max talks about heretical texts. He issues the companion quest "The Illustrated Manual". The first objective is to search the book collector's domicile north of Edgewater.
An OSI Vial, a quest item, can be found on the altar directly across from Vicar Max's room.
The General Store is just south of the chapel. Davilas picks up a little Heavy Ammo, a Mag Pick, and some Bypass Shunts. Bypass Shunts are needed to hack into terminals in this game.
A couple of dead residents are in the southeastern alley. A "Damaged Letter" is on the ground next to one of them.

Previously, Heorot continued the Wings of the Goddess storyline. He carried out Bastok's fifth Crystal War quest, "Burden of Suspicion". Then, he went to Southern San d'Oria for Wings of the Goddess Mission 3: "Cait Sith" and Mission 4: "The Queen of the Dance". Now, he will continue the Wings of the Goddess story with Mission 5: "While the Cat is Away".
Heorot resumes in his Mog House in present-day Bastok. He heads outside.
Bastok Mines (time 0:53):
Heorot uses the Survival Guide at I-9 to teleport to Southern San d'Oria in the Ronfaure Front.
Southern San d'Oria [S] (time 2:23):
For Wings of the Goddess Mission 5: "While the Cat is Away", Heorot talks to Eauvague, T.K., at L-10 to head out to East Ronfaure [S].
East Ronfaure [S] (time 3:05):
A scene takes place as Heorot enters East Ronfaure [S] from Southern San d'Oria [S]. He catches up with his catty acquaintance. She sure seems to know a great deal. It seems that Lilisette is not her biggest fan. Afterwards, Lilisette asks for Heorot's help in La Vaule, which is Davoi in the present.
This begins Wings of the Goddess Mission 6: "A Timeswept Butterfly".
At G-6, Heorot reenters Southern San d'Oria [S].
Southern San d'Oria [S] (time 16:55):
Heorot uses the Survival Guide at K-10 to teleport to Jugner Forest [S] in the Norvallen Front.
Jugner Forest [S] (time 17:17):
Heorot arrives at G-11. He examines the nearby Wooden Gate to enter La Vaule [S].
La Vaule [S] (time 18:02):
As Heorot enters the zone, a sequence of scenes takes place with Lilisette, her troupe, and Ragelise later on. Things are heating up in La Vaule.
After the lengthy scenes, Heorot gains control at J-6. This begins Wings of the Goddess Mission 7: "Purple, The New Black". Heorot must head to the Reinforced Gateway at F-9. From the entrance, the safest route is to follow the right-hand wall all the way.
At F-9, Heorot examines the Reinforced Gateway. Another cutscene sequence takes place. The enemy summons a new contender.
After the scene, Heorot examines the Reinforced Gateway at F-9 again. He chooses the battlefield for "Purple, The New Black".
Once Heorot has prepared himself and his Trust NPCs, it is boss time against Galarhigg, a dark dragon. Not a major challenge to a Level 99 party.
Another long sequence of scenes take place after Galarhigg is defeated. Heorot learns more about Lilisette and Ragelise. There is also a scene with ... Cait Sith? Okay, things just got a lot weirder.

Davilas is currently carrying out the Version 4.0 storyline. Previously, he met Cuord at the Royal Army Headquarters in Kimbel City. He also met Dianji. Davilas explored the Tiprone Highlands north of Kimbel. At Starfall Valley, he fought Sparky so Dianji could get something he needed. Another scene with Dianji took place back in Kimbel. Davilas also fought Ruin in the Magic Labyrinth again. Now, he will go to the Transfer Gate at the Royal Army Headquarters and accompany Cuord to another area.
Davilas resumes in his house in the Azlan housing area. Outside, he checks his mail and receives gold for items that sold on the bazaar. Many thanks to the buyers!
Davilas uses the Eteenel Cube to teleport to Kimbel.
Royal City of Kimbel (time 2:14):
At the inn, Davilas hires a support party. Dianji in Dianji's house has some story information.
At E-4, Davilas goes through the gate to the Royal Army Headquarters grounds.
At C-2, he examines the door to the Transfer Gate. This triggers a cutscene with Cuord and Dianji. Dianji gives Cuord a couple of items that he will need. Then, Cuord and Davilas go to the teleporter inside the Transfer Gate, but something is wrong.
Domineus Manor (time 10:49):
The next scene takes place when Davilas and Cuord come to in the Domineus Manor. Melearde is there. Davilas and Cuord also meet the "maid", Zagulf. Is it just me, or does something seem off about this situation? Cuord is definitely agitated. By the way, he calls Melearde older sister (姉).
After the scenes, Davilas gains control at C-3. His next objective is to find Cuord at the manor's entrance.
At this point, Davilas can explore the manor for treasures.
On floor 3F, he takes the northern door at D-3 to the terrace. At E-2 on the terrace, a black chest contains 3 Blue Alchemy Stones (青の錬金石).
Davilas takes the door at D-3 back into the manor.
In the kitchen on floor 1F, Davilas takes the elevator at G-4 down to a closed-off part of the basement. At E-3 in the basement, a black chest contains 3 pieces of Kaleidoskin (幻獣の皮).

Previously, Heorot continued training as Paladin in Rolanberry Fields and reached Level 40. Now, he will continue training in Yhoator Jungle.
Heorot resumes in his Mog House in Bastok. In his delivery box, he receives money for a stack of Fire Crystals that sold on the auction house. He also gets back a stack of Fire Crystals and a stack of Water Crystals that did not sell. Then, he goes outside to Bastok Mines.
Bastok Mines (time 1:21):
Heorot first goes to the auction house. He puts the stack of Fire Crystals and the stack of Water Crystals back up for sale.
When he is ready to go, he uses the Survival Guide at I-9 to teleport to Yhoator Jungle, Elshimo Uplands.
Yhoator Jungle (time 2:55):
Heorot arrives at the Outpost at I-8. He uses the nearby Field Manual and undertakes the Page 1 individual training to defeat 3 White Lizards and 6 members of the Goblin family per training regime. He heads to the northwestern part of the zone and hunts these monsters.
Heorot reaches Level 46 as Paladin.
Then, he returns to the Outpost at I-8. With the Field Manual, he switches to the Page 5 individual training to defeat 10 members of the Tonberry family per training regime. He focuses on the little green terrors in the east and south of the zone.
During the hunt, the game client freezes. Very odd. I almost never have that problem with this game. Fortunately, I am able to restart the client and continue recording soon afterwards.
Eventually, Heorot reaches Level 50 as Paladin.
When he has finished, he uses the Survival Guide at the Outpost at I-8 to teleport back to Bastok Mines.
Bastok Mines (time 49:13):
Heorot visits Neigepance at the Chocobo Stables and sells off some loot. Then, he heads to the residential area.
Mog House (time 53:35):
Heorot changes his main job to Level 1 Dark Knight with White Mage as secondary. He will start training as Dark Knight in the next video.

Previously, Heorot continued grinding in Escha - Ru'Aun. He has earned a total of 264 Job Points as Red Mage. In this video, he will do some more Job Point grinding as Red Mage in Escha - Ru'Aun.
Heorot resumes in his Mog House in Bastok. In his delivery box, he receives gil for three Riftborn Boulders, three Plutons, and a chunk of Beitetsu that sold at auction. Many thanks to the buyers!
Then, Heorot heads out to Bastok Mines.

Heorot teleports to Misareaux Coast, Tavnazian Archipelago.
Misareaux Coast (time 1:50):
Heorot arrives at Home Point #1 at G-5. Up the hill, he examines the Undulating Confluence at G-5 to enter Escha - Ru'Aun.
Escha - Ru'Aun (time 2:29):
Heorot arrives at H-11. After summoning his Trust NPCs, he hunts some more Eschan Il'aern in this zone.
Heorot accrues 2 Job Points for an overall total of 266 Job Points earned. He has a current total of 7 Job Points.
When he has finished for now, he uses the Undulating Confluence at H-11 to return to Misareaux Coast, Tavnazian Archipelago.
Misareaux Coast (time 55:40):
Heorot arrives at G-5. Just down the hill to the west, he uses Home Point #1 at G-5 to teleport to Port Jeuno.
Port Jeuno (time 56:16):
Heorot trades his Crests to Shami at H-8 for storage.
Then, he teleports to Bastok Markets.
Bastok Markets (time 58:02):
Heorot trades his Copper A.M.A.N. Voucher to Isakoth at E-11. In Mjoll's Goods, he sells his loot to Olwyn at E-11.
Then, Heorot teleports to Bastok Mines.
Bastok Mines (time 59:45):
At the auction house, Heorot puts three Plutons, a chunk of Beitetsu, and a Pellucid Stone up for sale.
Then, Heorot enters the residential area.
Mog House (time 1:01:52):
Heorot signs off. Next time, he will continue grinding.

Previously, the party gathered a few Lores for Strago in the World of Ruin and encountered the available monsters in the Jidoor/Zozo/Maranda area. Then, they went to the Veldt to start getting some more Rages for Gau while learning spells from their new Espers. They will now continue hunting on the Veldt.
World of Ruin - Overworld:
The party resumes outside Mobliz. The current lineup is Locke, Sabin, Strago, and Gau.
Strago equips the Cursed Shield. It is time to start the process of uncursing it. The Cursed Shield puts an array of status ailments on the wearer, but most can be prevented by giving the wearer a Ribbon, as well. The wearer will still be inflicted with Doom, however. The Cursed Shield will be uncursed after the party wins 255 battles with it equipped.
Strago has learned the following Lores: Doom, Roulette, Aqua Breath, Aero, 1000 Needles, Mighty Guard, Revenge Blast, White Wind, Lv. 5 Death, Lv. 4 Flare, Lv. 3 Confuse, Traveler, Dischord, Bad Breath, Transfusion, Rippler, Stone, and Self-Destruct.

Locke learns the spell Firaga from Phoenix.
Sabin learns the spells Blizzaga and Thundaga from Valigarmanda. He has now mastered all Valigarmanda's spells. Sabin equips Quetzalli.
Strago learns the spells Graviga and Tornado from Midgardsormr. He has now mastered all Midgardsormr's spells. Strago equips Fenrir.
Gau learns the following Rages: Dropper, Twinscythe, Misty, Basilisk, Leap Frog, Gloomwind, Purusa, Galypdes.
When the party has finished hunting for now, they board the Falcon and fly south to Mobliz. They land and enter town.

Previously, the party continued the story. In Under Junon, Cloud played the "Jumping with Mr. Dolphin" minigame and used the Shiplift to get his friends to Junon. After he met with them again, they went through the Junon Aerodrome. As they reached Larboard Junon, Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith decided to infiltrate the military parade to inaugurate Rufus. Unfortunately, they ran into a Commander Adjutant and a Commander, and Cloud is now a parade captain. He must search Larboard Junon to assemble his drill team for the main scenario "The Seventh Infantry" and the sub-scenario "No 'I' in 'Team'". The party has already found one unit of the Seventh Infantry at the Glabrescent Bar. They will now continue exploring Larboard Junon and rounding up units of the Seventh Infantry.

Previously, the party defeated the Hell Wyrm, an optional boss in the Sochen Cave Palace. Now, they will carry out the annoying Behemoth King hunt.
The party resumes at Southgate in Rabanastre.
At the Clan Hall, they talk to Montblanc (time 1:22). They read Priority Petition No. 10 for the Behemoth King, Rank VII. This begins the hunt "Truth Shrouded in Mist". The petitioner is Koqmihn at Dalan's House in Lowtown.
The party takes the door from the North End to the North Sprawl in Lowtown (time 2:44).
At Dalan's House in the South Sprawl, they talk to Koqmihn (time 3:41). They accept the hunt. The Behemoth King watches over its lesser brothers in a "snow-covered plain in a mysterious wood". Sounds like the southern part of the Feywood. The party must draw out the Behemoth King by defeating monsters.
The party heads south to Southgate in Rabanastre (time 5:24).
At the Rabanastre Crystal, they teleport to Giruvegan (time 5:39). They arrive at the Gate of Earth.
The party heads out through Gate Gigas to the Edge of Reason in the Feywood (time 6:22).
In the Edge of Reason, the party must defeat the Giruveganus in the south of the zone (time 7:01). This is the only monster they must defeat here.
The party heads northeast to the Ice Field of Clearsight (time 7:47). Here, they have to take out ALL the monsters. The zone starts with 29 monsters. The scrambled minimap makes things difficult. However, if you set the battle mode to Active, you can run around with your attack target menu open.
The party returns to the Edge of Reason (time 11:51). All the normal enemies are gone. However, there is no sign of the Behemoth King.
The party goes back to the Ice Field of Clearsight (time 15:41). They find a few more monsters that have respawned or that they just missed.
The party returns to the Edge of Reason (time 18:05).
This time, they find the Behemoth King (time 18:36). They switch to a party of Basch, Ashe, and Penelo. Basch and Ashe take Ribbons, and Penelo takes an Opal Ring. Penelo equips the Staff of the Magi for non-elemental magick. Ashe equips the Masamune.
The Behemoth King comes with a few buffs to dispel, including Reflect. It has return damage. Its White Breath can inflict Stop. It can cast various high-level spells, including Holy. For much of the battle, it will alternate between immunity to physical attacks and immunity to magicks. So, Basch sets up a Drain Gambit that he can turn on or off, and Penelo sets up an Attack Gambit that she can turn on or off. Penelo equips the Whale Whisker when she needs to attack, the Staff of the Magi when she needs to cast spells. Basch also prepares a Chronos Tear Gambit for an ally with the status Stop. This battle is a good candidate for a Reverse strategy.
When its HP is about half gone, it will use Greater Barrier to put up Protect and Shell. The party can dispel this, provided the Behemoth King is vulnerable to magick. If you want to use a Quickening chain, wait until it is vulnerable to physical attacks.
The party eventually defeats the Behemoth King (time 36:00). Behemoth King vanquished!
The party switches back to a lineup of Vaan, Balthier, and Fran. They set Battle Mode back to Wait.
After defeating the Behemoth King, the party earns the Behemoth King in the Sky Pirate's Den. The player earns the title of Lord of the Kings. Heh!
The party heads southwest through Gate Gigas to the Gate of Earth in Giruvegan (time 38:12).
At the Giruvegan Crystal, the party teleports to Southgate in Rabanastre (time 38:52).
They take the gate to the South Sprawl of Lowtown (time 39:12).
At Dalan's House in the South Sprawl, they report to Koqmihn (time 39:36). "Truth Shrouded in Mist" complete! The party earns 250 gil and 2 Bacchus's Wines. Although that reward seems laughable, Koqmihn provides a hint to the true reward.
The party takes the gate back to Southgate in Rabanastre (time 40:54).
At the Rabanastre Crystal, they teleport to the Sand-strewn Pass in Mt Bur-Omisace (time 41:08).
At the Temple Approach, the party finds the Wyrm Snout (time 41:43). Before examining it, Vaan must unequip his weapon. Vaan chooses to strike the snout. He picks up the Wyrm Snout Plunder: 500,000 gil and a Rod of Faith. That's more like it! The Rod of Faith provides on-hit Faith. Of course, the money is the better part of the reward.
