One of the first bands to have been described with the *"shoegazing"* label, were an English alternative band formed in ***[London](https://cutt.ly/GQCIBch)*** in 1987. ***"Cocteau Twins"*** was a Scottish band active from 1979 to 1997. They were formed in Grangemouth by ***[Robin Guthrie](https://cutt.ly/tvKpRaT)*** (guitars, drum machine) and ***[Will Heggie](https://cutt.ly/nvKpOu1)*** (bass), adding ***[Elizabeth Fraser](https://cutt.ly/AvKpDfq)*** (vocals) in 1981 and replacing Heggie with multi-instrumentalist ***[Simon Raymonde](https://cutt.ly/CvKpJR8)*** in 1983.
The group earned critical praise for their ethereal, effects-laden sound and the vocals of Fraser, whose lyrics often abandon recognisable language, than on the subjective sounds and textures of verbalized emotions. They pioneered the 1980s alternative rock subgenre of dream pop.
***"Head over Heels"*** is the second studio album by ***"Cocteau Twins"***, released in October 1983 by **[4AD](https://cutt.ly/KvKaGFi)**.
Fraser's singing was more direct in the mix than it had been on the band's first album, ***"Garlands"***, and although her lyrics were still often understandable, she began to shift away from conventional vocabulary towards enigmatic, emotional sound.
Perhaps the two strongest numbers of all are: ***"Sugar Hiccup"*** mixing the mock choir effect the band would use elsewhere with both a lovely guitar line and singing, and ***"Musette and Drums"***, a massive, powerful collision of Guthrie's guitar at its loudest and most powerful and Fraser's singing at its most intense.
The album introduces a variety of different shadings and approaches to the incipient Cocteau's sound, pointing the band towards the exultant, elegant beauty of later releases.

***Sonic Youth*** was an American rock band based in *New York City*, formed in 1981.
