"A little over a year after the premiere of 'Récit (Chemins VII)' with the Orchestra Sinfonica Sicilliana in Palermo, followed by a performance at the Milan Music Festival, and then at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, I was entrusted with the artistic direction of a big public event 'Tous en Scène' in 1998. At the time I asked Maestro Luciano Berio to write a work for a very large ensemble of saxophones, of the same type as the work for 1000 amateur musicians to which he had made a contribution in Lille a few years earlier. Unfortunately, the composer did not have the time necessary for this endeavour them; and thus he himself suggested that I transcribe 'Récit (Chemins VII)' for an ensemble of saxophones, which I did together with Vincent David. Luciano Berio carefully read our work and listened to the recording of the first version (originally for solo saxophone, saxophone quartet and eight additional saxophones); we were in the composer's box at the Cologne Philharmonic with whom I was performing Récit at the time. He was immediately enthusiastic about it and suggested that I rework the two ensembles into a single group of twelve saxophones, and added the percussion to further articulate the music and to underline the high notes here and there. We carried out these chageswhich again I presented to the composer, this time in our box at the BBC studios in London where we were rehearsing Récit with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. I can still see him taking his pencil to correct certain passages giving me real lesson in composition! 'The saxophone ensemble is much more uniform than the orchestra; it is necessary to differentiate the colours by enriching the sustained notes which function as the resonance of the soloist.' He then wrote in front of me a few timbral or melodic variations: repeated notes, fluttertonguing, groups of notes echoing the soloist, asking me to develop this idea throughout the whole piece. The last time I showed him the result of our work, in 2002, he was really pleased with it and said to me with his usual humour: 'Here you have a new Berio piece!' "
