HG Wells rejects patriotism and nationalism in this intentionally provocative talk, speaking of his great desire for a future 'world unity' where barriers between countries are dissolved. While acknowledging his own great pride in being an Englishman, Wells decries both the increasing nationalism that is plaguing the world and the march towards war, a catastrophe that many believe is now inevitable, while still hoping for peace and co-operation if the courage and imagination can be found. Next, he turns his attention to the topic of aviation, looking forward to a time when 'this great gift of invention, flying' might be available to all for the purposes of international travel.
The concern that Wells expressed over nationalism was inspired by the rise of Germany's National Socialist Party - aka the Nazi Party - which had assumed power the previous spring under the leadership of Adolf Hitler.

New amenities bring relief to Bessbrook.
James Boyce reports from this pretty Quaker village on the opening of new public toilets. The amenities are built on the site of the old fountain in the town square.
John Grubb Richardson established the modern Bessbrook in 1845 as a model village based on Quaker ideals. The selling of alcohol was prohibited and amenities such as schools, a dispensary and a community centre were provided for the workers in his linen mill. This village was the inspiration for later examples built by Cadbury at Bournville and Rowntree's at New Earswick.

Steam Trains | Great British engines, railway journeys and steam enthusiasts
Time Out | The Four Steamers
'Diesel engines are machines, steam locomotives are practically human.'
CHANNEL | BBC 2
FIRST BROADCAST | 07 May 1964
SYNOPSIS
This beautifully filmed item follows the journeys of four privately owned steam trains and speaks to their proud owners about how and why they acquired these prized possessions. The camera follows the 4555 Great Western tank engine and the Great Marquess 3442 as they travel through some of the most spectacular scenery in England and Wales. We also see the Flying Scotsman, bought for £3,000 by Alan Pegler, steam into Marylebone station, and the oldest locomotive in private hands, the J52, a Great Northern tank engine.
DID YOU KNOW?
In 1969, with the backing of the Board of Trade, Alan Pegler took the Flying Scotsman on a tour of the USA. However, a change of government while he was there resulted in the board withdrawing its support and Pegler's money began to run out. With American creditors closing in, he resorted to storing the engine at an army base until a British buyer was found. William McAlpine bought the Flying Scotsman and shipped the engine home via the Panama Canal in 1973.

Haunting footage on the streets of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake which devastated much of the city, left more than 300,000 people homeless and killed over 3000. The earthquake was the first natural disaster of its magnitude to be documented by photography and motion picture footage. This film appears to be made by amateurs who attached a camera to a car driven around the city. Noticeable is the huge amount of people out sightseeing amid the rubble. See also this Edison newsreel showing scenes of the rescue operation and clearup. And see “A Trip Down Market Street” which shows the streets of San Francisco only 6 days prior to when the earthquake hit.
