Well this is the Lenovo laptop that made Onyx flip out with displaced aggression over a smell. Because of this stupid laptop my cats now hate each other and I am afraid of them. Even though this laptop mostly worked this is the only appropriate fate for it. This is only part two of what I have planned. I won't be satisfied till it is a smoldering pile of rubble.

More of a ramble of something I have been thinking about. There aren't any good 2U options that give a good density of both 3.5" and 2.5" drives. What would be even better is if the drive bay options were configurable and completely toolless. I have thought about making some test prototypes with my 3D printer, but I don't have a program I can use yet. Someone should make this ideal real then make tons of money selling them.

Well more problems in the homelab. Remote backups are still broken. The box I built is not working right, and is running out of space. I really need to get things figured out. Also wouldn't hurt to have some more video editing horsepower for home. I can't pin down a config since I want support for 4Kn drives. Really would prefer a Dell server but also don't want noisy. Some of my wants:
Up to 16 cores around 2.7GHz (Like the Xeon E5-2690 V3 for example)
64GB DDR4
Up to 100TB storage with 2 drive redundancy
GPU support
10GB networking through add on card
I would like it to be under $400 for everything but the drives.
Haven't decided on a hypervisor yet. Either gonna stick with ESXi or maybe do TrueNAS since I won't be doing as much with it. If I do run TrueNAS that would remove some of my motherboard limitations. Tough to choose. I do wish the PowerEdge T420/T430 supported faster CPUs. Going nuts with a T630 would be a blast but they are too expensive.

Well hopefully I am able to get help today doing a reintroduction with no barrier. Figured I would get onyx used to the door I haven't opened in a while. Leaving it open tonight for him run in and out of.

Well I'm stumped on what I want to do. Basically I need more storage, and some faster storage. That NVMe adapter card works, but I have some minor concerns and issues. I think those supermicro servers will be my best bet, but they make my NVMe desires tricky. I've decided running an R730xd is probably going to be too noisy. Getting something nicer like a Dell PowerEdge R7515 doesn't make much sense either.
I'm leaning towards the 3.5" bay supermicro chassis. Fill it full of SSDs, HDDs and PCI express NVMe drives. Then put TrueNAS on it. Alternatively I get a R730xd and make it a SSD caching server of sorts. Graphics cards just make that R730 too noisy.

Pretty well known Christmas tradition in the Lincoln Nebraska area. This was recorded back in 2021. I believe they used to put actual candles in the bags but now they use LED tea lights. Don't get the same flickering effect, but still looks cool. I will have to try to swing by this year with the GoPro and get a better recording.
