Der verlorene Sohn (The Prodigal Son)
Tonio Feuersinger, son of an old peasant family, lives a life of little variety in his South Tyrolean homeland. At the celebration after a ski race, which he won together with two comrades from his village, he meets the American millionaire's daughter Lilian and her father, who donated the main prize.
Lilian hires Tonio and his friend Jörg for a summit climb. As they climb a steep ridge, the snow suddenly gives way. Tonio falls to one side, Lilian and Jörg to the other. Under the most difficult high alpine conditions, Tonio manages to bring Lilian and Jörg up. Tonio and Lilian escape unharmed, but Jörg dies. Now that Tonio has experienced the "big wide world" vicariously through Lilian, Tonio wants more out of life and out of the supposed confinement of mountain isolation. He quickly throws all the warnings of the villagers to the wind, and a few weeks later leaves his familiar home for the city noise of New York.
