Notes
Two days after starting their North American tour in the city of Milwaukee on March 29th, 1977, Tangerine Dream gave an outstanding performance in the Detroit Ford Auditorium, a concert that can be best described as 'Heavy Metal Electronics', as it contains some of the most vicious and furious guitar work by Edgar Froese that has been heard so far.
Maybe he wanted to pay tribute to Detroit's punk music heroes The Stooges, whose singer Iggy Pop was mentioned in the credits of Edgar Froese's solo work Macula Transfer. Compared to the excellent audience recording as presented on Tangerine Tree Volume 25: Detroit 1977, the official Encore double album release sounds almost tame, and it seems that the frantic Detroit audience transported Tangerine Dream to new creative heights, such is the intensity of this concert.
With Tangerine Tree VIII, released in late 2005, this volume has been re-released with a new version of this recording, offering a clearer sound, being remastered from a first generation recording. With this re-release the track sequence was corrected that had been completely mixed up on the original release.

Notes
In spring 1977 Tangerine Dream performed two sell-out tours in the USA. They were supported by the visual effects of a Krypton gas laser by Laserium. Tickets in Los Angeles, Cleveland, Washington and New York were all sold-out within days. In October 1977 Virgin released the double-album Encore that featured four long tracks recorded during the tour. Some of the music based on themes from Ricochet, Stratosfear and Sorcerer. The titles Coldwater Canyon (including Edgar Froese's longest guitar solo on record) and Cherokee Lane originate from the roads in Coldwater Canyon near Los Angeles, where TD lived for a while during the tour.
Encore is supposed to be the definitive live TD album among fans, and it was the last record featuring Peter Baumann, for after a concert in Denver, Colorado, during the second half of their tour, he informed Edgar Froese and Chris Franke that his private obligations no longer allowed him a full-time collaboration with TD. In November 1977 Peter Baumann left TD for good and started working as a solo artist and producer. He built his own studio in Berlin, before finally leaving that city and moving to New York.
Edgar Froese about the leaving of Peter Baumann: "I told Peter Baumann to leave the band. We were in a grave situation stylistically. We wanted to go on further, creating new things and buying more equipment -- learning a lot of new stuff. With his studio he couldn't even practise with us, because his studio was taking up all his time. [...] It was a little strange during the American tour when he said: 'Right, I have to go back to Berlin for a few days to see a guy who is doing the acoustics in the studio.' [...] But anyway, we didn't split on a fight. We just told him to leave and in the end I think he felt OK with us. He's gone to America now, and in the meantime he's sold his studio and is setting up a new one in New York. It's stupid and he's done it for nothing really. He gave up what I think was a creative band and is now sitting in a room somewhere, playing some sort of music. Still, if he feels OK then that's alright." (Interview with Neumusik, January 1980)
From 30 Years Of Dreaming
At the beginning of 1977, Peter Baumann was occupied with arranging his studio in Berlin and incorporating new equipment. It was left to Froese and Franke to plan the forthcoming tour in the United States. The tour started on 29th March in Milwaukee, and ended on 26t

"War is much too serious a matter to be entrusted to the military."
- Georges Clemenceau
The 1978 studio release Cyclone was a somewhat controversial album with its use of vocals by Steve Jolliffe. But it also had its good moments, and on the European 1978 tour there were a few remarkable performances. One of these events, the gig at the Audimax in Hamburg, is presented on Tangerine Tree Volume 11: Hamburg 1978. Up to now no complete recording of this show has appeared among collectors, thus this release features the second set and the encore of this concert only. There is no sign of Bent Cold Sidewalk or Rising Runner Missed By Endless Sender here, but parts of Madrigal Meridian can be heard during this widely improvised gig.
The track listing above shows titles according to the naming conventions used throughout this compilation and the revised artwork by Leah Cim. The track listing as printed on the original cover is as follows:
Part One 43:12
Part Two 9:20
In 2004, all material of this volume has been made officially available through the release of The Bootleg Box Set Vol. 2.

Tangerine Tree Volume 54: The Keep does not present a live concert like most of the other volumes of this series but unreleased soundtrack material from the 1983 movie The Keep in an as yet unheard sound quality, taken from a first generation copy of the studio master tape. The original soundtrack has never been officially released in its original form, though there are several bootlegs (including The Keep) featuring original material. The officially (though extremly rare) TDI release of The Keep (1997) contains mostly re-recorded and tangentized music material different from the music originally used for the movie.
