Sonneto 104
Between 1836-1837, Liszt spent some of his happiest and most creative time with Countess Marie d'Agoult in Italy and wrote the second book of 'Années de Pèlerinage'. The work was inspired by Petrarch's sonnet 104, which evokes the ambivalence of love and tells of its seeing blindness, and its sweet sorrow - 'while I hate myself, I ardently love others'. Liszt's treatment of this contradictory thought is intensely powerful, as if on the level of forte - both in mood and in sound. The resignation only happens in the epilogue - 'this is what you, my mistress, have done to me.'
