We've finished our newest no dig garden and planted it up with about 30 different vegetables and herbs. We went with a pizza layout for the paths and beds. It may not the most efficient but we like it because it's both practical and aesthetically pleasing. In this final video in the 3 part series we're going to show you how we made the paths with wood chips and what we have planted.
Lots of good old reliable and well known favorites, as well as some exciting rare yet tasty root vegetables for the winter. We will be hosting a live questions & answers video session to give you all a chance to ask any questions you have about this little project. Please feel free to watch the previous videos in this 3 part series if you haven't seen them.

We decided to make a more detailed and flashier chicken tractor video. The chickens are helping us to prepare the ground for our new no dig vegetable garden about the size of an allotment plot (100sqm). The grass gets eaten and scratched up while the ground is fertilized. Watch how much of a difference only 10 days made.
At least 50% of what the chickens eat is forage i.e. grass, insects and weeds. The chickens have a happy life doing what they love to do - scratching the ground and the eggs are just a high quality bi-product easily offsetting the cost of feed. Plus they're saving us having to use 3 layers of cardboard to smother the grass for our no dig garden beds. If you don't want to keep chickens, don't worry this video also contains another way of prepping the ground smothering the grass before starting your new garden.

In this video we'll bring you along to harvest tubers, cuttings and plants from our gardens. February is a time of transition - longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures has a lot of early plants waking up from their Winter hibernation. With an increasing sense of urgency this is best time of year to take cuttings as leaf buds swell. Spring is rolling in and there's yet so much potential to prepare countless little projects before hand to make the most of the coming growing season. It's going to a very productive year!

This spring we have set up a grow challenge. You can grow food anywhere anyplace even without access to land. We are growing 6 different ancient edible tubers in pots and we are going to give the harvest away in a free giveaway raffle at the end of the growing season. We do like potatoes but in this challenge we included something a little more exotic - Oca, Mashua and Jerusalem Artichoke. What is your favorite root vegetable? Please comment below. :D
We have posted a video (see below) of setting up 12 large pots filled with compost mulched with woodchips and volcanic rock dust. These are in a permanent location in the middle of our nursery in full sun and will be looked after until harvest time. Although nearly zero maintenance they will be watered in times of drought. You can follow progress as we will post pictures and video updates during the summer.

The Woodchip Island is by far our most productive and closest to zero maintenance garden. We've been planting more and more perennials filling all those gaps where annual vegetables used to roam last year. Around 100 varieties of fruits, berries, flowering insecteries and tuberous vegetables all in a fairly compact space. We only spend 5 hours per year in maintenance, other than that it's mostly harvesting both produce and propagation material.

Mashua is a tuberous cousin of the garden Nasturtium. It's been used by humans for over 8000 years and in cultivation for 1400 years in Peru and Bolivia. Leaves and flowers are mild and nice in a salad. Tubers can be harvested all Winter or left in the ground where the plant will continue to grow year after year like a perennial. Tubers are spicy raw, a nice addition grated into a salad or roasted whole with other root vegetables. Plants require some space but love to climb so you can save a lot of space by providing a trellis.
