RTX 4000 vs RX 7900 Series : Is History Going to Repeat Itself?
Let's get started with Nvidia. Do you remember what Jensen said a couple of months ago? I mean when PCWorld asked him if chip prices would go back down now that crypto has crashed, and all he had to say was “ Moore’s Law is dead.” and “ The idea that a chip is going to go down in price is a story of the past,”.
And then he went on to announce the RTX 40 series, where an 80 class card, the 4080, is now selling for 1200 bucks instead of the consistent 6 to 700 dollars we were used to see. Yeah, that pissed a lot of people off. Especially since the performance gains on that 80 card, were about the same as the price increase. But nothing brings me joy like a little bit of karma.
Apparently, the 4080 is selling really poorly compared to the RTX 4090. In fact, the 4090 outsells the 4080 by nearly 3 and a half times. I mean a lot of stores have stock in Canada, the US, the UK, China, and even Germany, and that’s despite NVidia shipping out less than 4 times the amount of 4080s compared to the 4090. Like there were 130 000 4090’s shipped out at launch compared to 30 000 for the 4080, and it still can't sell. And it's the holiday season!
And that tells me 2 things. First, there's always going to be people for who the money is no object and all they want is to go fast. I have a friend like that who watches my video, you know who you are. And the second thing is a message to you “ you can do it. We can do it . We are doing it. “ its clear that gamers are finally talking with their wallet. And I suspect that once the RX 7900 series from AMD launches, that’s when we’ll see Nvidia’s response.

So, 4070 ti, it’s out, it’s bad value, and pretty much every reviewer said so. RTX 4080? Same thing, you get more performance and you get charged an equal amount of money for it. RTX 4090? Honestly, it’s probably the only one that actually makes sense from a price-to-performance ratio. Not saying it’s a great buy, but it’s the best price to performance so far.
So what's next ? or actually a better question, when are we seeing something that will replace the king of value on the green team, the RTX 3060 ti, well according to Twitter leaker, Mega Size GPU, we’re not far from release. The RTX 4060 ti would be ready by the end of May. What about the RTX 4060? Well, while mega size GPU says its still undetermined but wccftech heard wind that it would also launch in may. Given that they would launch in may it’s reasonable to assume that this would be announced at Computex.
WCCFtech also got some images of the GPU itself and it looks like this. Not as original as the 3060 ti, not going to lie I preferred the design of that one, but it is different. You can see how the fins actually flatten toward the middle of the card. If we look at the PCB, this thing is impressively small. It barely goes past the PCIE fingers like this is going to be a tiny boi.

Qualcomm just announced the next step in smartphone SOC’s. For the high-end phones, we got the Snapdragon 865 and for middle-end ones the 765. The reveal was heavily focused on 5g technology, which is kind of boring honestly.
One thing they mentioned though is updates for the new Adreno 650 GPU, and when I mean updates, I mean driver updates similar to what you would see on PC. this would allow your phone to get optimization updates for specific games and maybe even added features without having to wait for the next Android version to come out. You would just have to download it on the play store.
Smartphone processors are getting really powerful, I wouldn’t be surprised is arm based consoles made a big comeback, and actually stayed this time. This Adreno 650 can actually drive QHD+ resolutions at up to144hz… if the game is simple enough of course. Now while this GPU driver update feature sounds nice, there are 2 problems. First, this is a going forward type of thing, meaning older snapdragon equipped phones will not have that feature. The second thing is that the updates are supposed to come from the phone manufacturers.. So yeah. At least it should be easier thanks to project Mainline in android which allows a more modular update approach for smartphone drivers and features.

In the last few months, console news, rumors, and leaks have been popping in left and right, but sony always seemed to be ahead of Microsoft in talking about their console. Their interview with Wired where their lead architect talked about the PS5 and its SSD, the other interview about the controller having force feedback on the triggers and even the dev kit pictures that kept popping up, Microsoft just seemed a little late to the party. Well. no more since the green team has just unveiled their next console, the Xbox Series X. i’ts such terrible name. This is not a watch Microsoft. Its a console, it needs a cool name. I would have preferred X1000… wait that’s bad too.
Anyways, they unveiled it, and wow is it a piece of equipment. It might not seem like it, but that thing is huge. Judging by the disk slot, it’s around 7 and inches wide and thick and about 12 inches tall. That makes it about the same volume if not more compared to the original Xbox one X. You know, the one that looks like a VCR? This thing will not fit anywhere in my cabinet, that is for sure. It seems like Microsoft just said, hey, let’s just make a mini ITX pc and ship that!
Now, of course, I’m just kidding that’s not what they did. Microsoft did say that they would use a custom SOC, which brings me to the title of this video. This SOC is weird.
So here are the facts, Microsoft will use AMD’s next-gen RDNA for the console’s graphics. So RDNA 2. Microsoft will also use AMD’s Zen 2 architecture for the CPU. Now Zen 2, as AMD likes to remind us is on the 7nm process. As for RDNA2, AMD locked it in for a 7nm+EUV process.
You see where I’m going here? they don’t have the same process yet are still on the same chip. This means that the custom chips for consoles are likely going to be made on a 7nm+ process. Kind of like a Zen 2.5 CPU with RDNA2 integrated graphics. Now I know what you’re going to say, Zen 2 has a chiplet design so they could just plop one chiplet for the cores, one for the GPU and one for the IO. And sure, they could, but the Project Scarlett video shows a monolithic design. Not only that, but the PS5 was also confirmed to be an integrated SOC.

At their latest press meeting, intel unveiled some pretty interesting new old stuff. Let me explain... First is what we already know about, the 9900KS, 5Ghz on all cores. We now know for sure that its coming next month. That chip is in a weird place honestly. A standard 9900k doesn’t have any issues overclocking to 5Ghz on all core, the only difference here is that the 9900KS will presumably be able to do it at a lower voltage possibly allowing for better overclocks from there. But that’s a lot of heat to take care of at that point.
The second thing they announced is for their HEDT platform. That’s anything above 8 cores right now. Intel is prepping Cascade Lake X for release next month, and for the first time, and presumably because of AMD, they’re going to slash the prices hard.
Now intel didn’t explicitly say that they were reducing the prices, but we know that Cascade lake is still based on Skylake aka 14nm++++, which means the performance improvements will be purely based on clock speeds and core counts. During the press event, Intel shared a slide showing that Cascade lake X would be around twice the performance per dollar as their last gen. Since we know intel still won't go higher than 18 cores with the new generation, that means the new chips will be around half the price of the last family. This is the first time intel truly caves on its pricing. Had it not been for threadripper 2’s existence or for threadripper 3 being around the corner we’d probably see a refresh without any changes.
Now is that enough? Will slashing prices in half give intel a chance? Maybe, but in the long run, it probably won't. If intel were to slash its 18 core CPU's price in half, which it won't since performance per dollar cant be calculated unless we know the performance of their new CPU's but anyways. If they were too, AMD is likely to just normalize their pricing for better value. So far, every time AMD saw competition moving close, they just beat them on value. It happened with Ryzen first-gen, it happened with Navi, and it's going to happen again. That intel chart shows AMD’s now 1-year-old Threadripper 2 line and we know damn well the Zen 2 version is about to be released.

With competition hitting them right in the face in the desktop market thanks to the Ryzen 3000 series, we still don't know how they plan to respond in the immediate future. We’ve heard rumors about a price cut for their current CPU’s and we got a new 9900KS but that’s not really a counter. The full list of 10th gen leaked so let’s go through it.
Starting with the i3’s it looks like intel decided to put a little more pep in their step by enabling hyperthreading on all the CPU’s. The 9th generation were all 4 cores 4 threads and now, well we get 4 cores 8 threads. They also all benefit from an extra Megabyte of cache which is interesting and they all get a slight bump in core speeds of about 200Mhz. Those chips will be priced between 129 and 179 US with only the 10350K being an unlocked processor. This means you’ll have to spend more to overclock and it seems like its the case with all the intel cpu’s. Since AMD has not released their Ryzen 3’s yet, we don't have anything to compare with right now.
Moving on to i5’s and once again we see the same move from intel enabling hyperthreading on all the sku’s. I think we’re starting to see a pattern here because the i5 also gets a bump in cache and in clock speed although they are a bigger bump than we saw with the i3’s. The i5’s will start at 179US and go all the way up to 269 for the 10600K which once again is the only overclockable sku in the i5’s. If we compare that to something from AMD, we have the 3600x which comes in at about 20$ cheaper, but interestingly enough, the intel part might be the better one here. At 6 cores and 12 threads, the 8700K is a challenger for 3600X so I wouldn't be surprised the increased clocks and cache are a match for AMD! Very interesting.
On to the i7’s and things look very very hot *That’s hot. The 10700 and 10700K look exactly like the 9900k except for clocks of 4.9 and 5.1Ghz respectively. Now here’s the thing, we heard about a price cut for the 9900k, but this price right here , for this CPU, is kind of insane. The 10700K with 8 cores and 16 threads will be , according to the leak, 339.Now that is a pretty big price drop from the 9900k’s 500$. 339 places it right under the 3700x for 9900K levels of performance. That’s insane. Look , I told you , I dont play favorites and this looks like a proper response coming from intel.
And lastly we got the almightly i9’s. Those were rumored for a longtime but here they all are sporting the biggest core count we’ve ever seen.. from an intel mainstream processor… 10 cores. DAMN. and they come with pretty extreme clock speeds too. The 3 models all reach 5Ghz minimum with the 10900F and10900KF reaching 5.1 and 5.2Ghz respectively. All 3 also get 20MB of cache. let’s start with Navi because god knows I’ve done enough Ryzen coverage in the last month or so. So it all starts with _Rogame. He’s a twitter leaker, a super reliable one might I add, and today, he’s kind of breaking the pc hardware internet. He just created his own website for his leaks and his first leak is a HUGE Big navi one. Essentially, he was able to decode all of the pcid’s and place them on the upcoming stack. This means we’ll know how many high-end GPU’s we’re going to see from AMD so, Let’s get into it.
Now for the actual specs, we only have the maximums. Up to 80 compute units, which would equate to 5120 Stream processors, basically twice the amount that the 5700XT currently has. The die size is also literally twice that of the 5700 xt at around 505 millimeters squared. Now that might sound HUGE, but for a flagship GPU at 7nm’s, it’s NOT. NVidia’s 2080 ti is at 775 millimeters squared. And Lastly we have the power efficiency or performance per watt of RDNA2. Big navi or Navi 21 is supposedly 50% better thanks to the enhanced TSMC node refresh It’s not 7nm+ but its definitely a new process.
Now that is a lot of horsepower, but what does the line-up actually look like. This is where rogame comes in.
Just to clarify the next section is part rogame leaks and part Speculations on my part. So grain of salt pound of fish. While there are leaks about data center and apple specific cards, I’m focusing on PC gaming.

Hey! get some CPU news up here. A couple of days ago, Gamers nexus revealed some of the leaks they received for AMD’s upcoming AM5 platform. He showed them to us to draw a comparison to other leaks currently circulating about the AM5 socket and its configuration. Specifically, the amount of pcie lanes on the cpu which is different between the current information and what he received about a year ago.
Now that’s fine, AMD might have changed something, in fact Steve thinks the current information is more likely accurate. But then he showed this little guy. A block diagram of AMD’s cpu layout for Raphael, aka the next step in the Zen architecture.
Now as we kind of have come to accept, it looks like Ryzen 7000 or whatever mainstream name AMD gives to the Zen 4 architecture, Ryzen 7000 will have a max of 16 core and 32 threads. The dies / CCD’s are still 8 cores and we dont see a third die here. We can see the codename which was Durango, but what actually got my interest is this right here. The IO die.
So for the Core chiplets, AMD evolved their process from 7nm to 7nm+, as for the IO die, amd stuck with a larger 12nm process. Well, it looks like for zen 4, its going to go down to a 7nm + process. How can I say that ?
Well, the IO Die seems to have been planned to house the integrated graphics! Also, if this releases in 2022, It would make sense for it to have RDNA 2 graphics which also are on 7nm+. This could also mean that every single Ryzen model from AMD could have integrated graphics!

A couple of weeks ago at CES 2022, AMD unveiled their new lineup of GPU’s for laptops. In 2021 , AMD had their RX 6000M lineup which included the RX 6600M, RX 6700M and RX 6800M. All based on the same 7nm process and Navi dies that are found on the desktop platform. Specifically, Navi 22 and navi 23.
For 2022, they introduced a new lineup of what we would consider refreshed GPU’s.one of the new lineups was dubbed the RX 6000S series. It was specifically optimized for better power efficiency, and more performance per watt. They built this model so we could have more GPU performance in slimmer laptops.
Anyways, so why am I talking about this?
Well, It looks like AMD isn’t done with this round of refreshes. According to a leaker over on the chiphell forum, and then corroborated by leaker extraordinaire Greymon 55, AMD is indeed bringing these new advancements to the desktop market. And they’re doing this pretty soon. These new Desktop cards are to be released in Q2 of 2022. the naming scheme would change by adding a 50 at the end and an XT where there isnt one. It’s unclear how many will get the refresh but it would go something like 6950 XT 6850 XT, 6750XT etc etc.
