Disney CAUGHT Lying About STAR WARS Again Over Profits
#starwars #disney
People argue online about how profitable Disney has been with Star Wars. According to the Walt Disney Company, Disney never loses and have won with astronomical profit margins. However, this is a bold lie meant to make "fans" believe that everything at Disney and Lucasfilm is fine with regards to Star Wars.
Last month, The Walt Disney Company lauded Bob Iger and his team for the significant return on investment achieved with the Star Wars franchise. However, recent revelations have shed light on the methodology behind these numbers, once again raising questions about Disney's transparency and motives in bolstering its stock price and thwarting the efforts of Nelson Peltz and other board seat contenders.
One of the central claims made was regarding the seemingly impressive Return On Investment (ROI) attributed to the franchises acquired under Iger's leadership. The presentation suggested that Disney's Star Wars trilogy yielded a 2.9 times return on the acquisition of Lucasfilm, prominently displayed alongside a timeline of key events in the company's history. Notably, the acquisition of Lucasfilm was singled out with a star, reinforcing the narrative. Additionally, imagery of the Star Wars logo and characters like the Mandalorian further enhanced this impression.
However, buried within the fine print lies the revelation that the purchase price of Lucasfilm was not factored into the ROI calculation. Instead, the calculation was based solely on the box office performance of Disney's Star Wars trilogy, its spinoff movies, merchandise, DVD and Blu-ray sales. This omission raises doubts about whether Disney's Star Wars movies have truly recouped the cost of acquiring Lucasfilm.
An analysis of company filings spanning over 800 pages has unveiled that the production costs for Disney's five Star Wars movies amounted to $2.1 billion, with The Force Awakens alone reaching $567.3 million. However, this figure only scratches the surface. While the costs of several Star Wars Disney+ streaming series are known, their profitability remains elusive due to the bundled subscription model of Disney+, which makes it challenging to attribute revenue to specific shows.
Unlike theatrical releases, where viewers pay separately for each screening, Disney+ subscribers gain access to all content for a single fee, complicating profit calculations. For instance, deducting the net cost of The Force Awakens from Disney's share of the box office yields a profit of $559.6 million, translating to a 1.2 times return on investment. Notably, this calculation excludes the performance of other Lucasfilm franchises.
Recent revelations indicate that Disney suffered a $134.2 million loss at the box office with its latest Indiana Jones movie, and its streaming series based on the 1988 fantasy film Willow was canceled despite substantial investments. While Lucasfilm's Industrial Light & Magic division adds value, it remains secondary to its flagship franchises in terms of financial impact.
