The Voice Of Lajorun - "Love Reference" | Color Red Music
The Voice of Lajorun utilize their signature style of anagobeat and bolster it with afro-soul in their second Color Red single “Love Reference.” Vocalist Ta’ye Adefemi reflects in the totality of love and the peaks and valleys that it encompasses. Love evokes feelings of fantasy to ridicule leaving footprints of unforgettable memories every step of the way. While the hypnotic rhythms reflect those of afrobeat pioneers Fela Kuti and Orlando Julius, Ta’ye’s voice has a silky modern edge reminiscent of time-tested R&B stars such as Maxwell. The project hails from Lagos, Nigeria.
Danny Mayer’s second Color Red single “Upsetter” is a tribute to the iconic dub producer Lee “Scratch” Perry, who passed away on August 21, 2021. This deep psychedelic dub track was composed last year, prior to his passing, as Mayer cited Perry as being the sole production influence on his entire upcoming album “Beginners Mind”. Upsetter’s solid foundation is another drum loop sent to him by Colin Jalbert. Mayer then dubbed it out & added heavy bass lines to create a spacious & psychedelic dub reggae track - plentiful with space echoes, ringing guitar chords, hypnotic vamps, & soulful filtered guitar leads floating on top.

Chelada” by the Polyrhythmics is a spicy melange of flavors that combines middle eastern tonalities over a simple, but heavy groove. The band veers away from traditional compositional tactics by keeping the rhythm section at the forefront with horns augmenting the tune. Ben Bloom (guitar) and Jason Gray (bass) carry the melody while the horns add textures through punches and swells on muted trumpet (Scott Morning), trombone (Elijah Clark) and flute (Art Brown). If you listen closely, you will hear nods to Rush’s “Tom Sawyer.” As the third single off of the band’s fifth full-length album ‘Man from the Future," the group creates different movements within singular songs as demonstrated by a transition to Karl Olson’s percussion feature over a vamp that then passes the torch to Nathan Spicer’s sparse and eerie Moog solo. The song crescendos into an epic war-like melody that is introduced by the horns and echoed by the full band.

Adryon de Leon’s “Ally” delivers a statement for the modern ages with a Motown vibe. De Leon reflects on the riots incited by the death of George Floyd happening two blocks from her house in Long Beach, California, and receiving messages from well-meaning friends the next morning. In response, she made the decision to stop being precious with the subject and penned “Ally” as a vehicle to process her own emotions and respond to all of them. The cathartic songwriting process invited musician friends from all walks of life and all parts of the country to contribute to the track including co-producers Max MacVeety and David Tam. De Leon reminds listeners that the fight for justice is not over and this iteration and uprising has only just begun. In tandem with the march-like drum beats, it is a call to arms that everyone can be an ally to the disenfranchised, vulnerable, and overlooked. Black Lives Matter.

In the third and final installment of The New Mastersounds’ “A Brighter Day,” the group collaborated with their coveted recent addition on vocals, Lamar Williams Jr. Williams plays his full hand of musical cards over Eddie Roberts’ arrangement as he lays down soothing pads of vocal harmonies that accentuate his soulful vocal leads and trace back to his musical upbringings in church and lineage as the son of Lamar Williams who played bass with The Allman Brothers from 1972-1976. Williams’ lyrics encourage growth, finding beauty during tumultuous times, and ultimately seeing the light at the end of the tunnel offering a glimmer of hope to a brighter day.

Annie J’s debut solo single “Slow It Back Down” puts her stunning vocals on display over a sultry roller skating disco groove. Heralded as “one of the best singers in Seattle and beyond” by Seattle Music Insider, Annie is a household name in the Pacific Northwest music scene performing with 45th St Brass, Seattle Rock Orchestra, and the late blues legend Cedell Davis. “Slow It Back Down” is a model track to launch her first solo body of work as it both sonically and vocally imparts the message of needing to slow it back down to get into the groove. Her pop-soul style of vocals can be compared to the likes of Janelle Monae, Solange, and the Bee Gees coming from a place of joy, movement, and self-expression. Annie collaborated with other stalwarts of the Seattle scene including Andrew Vait (Sisters, Little Wins), Nick Foster (Nick Foster Band), Scott Paul Johnson (Hot Bodies In Motion), and Stephanie Anne Johnson (the Hidogs), among others on her debut EP release ‘Get Back’ that will be released on Color Red in early 2022.
