Adding Decibels Made Simple(r) - Sound Speeds
There's a lot of confusion surrounding decibels. The name itself is even the common form but means 10 bels and "bel" probably has the most confusing definition of anything in existence. In this video I'm going to take the confusion out of adding decibels.

For starters you have to keep in mind that many decibels values change according to what they are measuring and are even logarithmic by nature. As opposed to linear, which would mean values increase according to a scale along a straight line (1,2 - 2,3 - 3,4, etc), logarithmic scale is plotted along a curve. As an example: 1 on the X value could may equal 1 on the Y but X=2 may be y=3 and x=3 could be y=7 and so forth. It may sound confusing by I'll get into that as well.

The goal here is to provide the basics that you can build on. Interested in learning more, I'd start by clicking on some of the below links and read there. One that note, below are the URLs to the websites shown in this video:

I also can't recommend http://www.sengpielaudio.com enough. It's full of great sound related info!

12:09 - I misspoke and stated that Shure states that 94dB is what they consider the volume to be of an average voice at 1 inch from a mic and 74dB is the same but at 1 meter. I meant to say 74dB is at 1 foot not meters. I missed that in the edit. Sorry.
