Google is honoring the American zoologist Dian Fossey on her 82nd birthday by showing a Doodle for her on its Home page.
Dian Fossey was born on January 16, 1932 in san Francisco, California.
She spent the beginning part of her career as an occupational therapist.
Then, Dian Fossey became interested in primates during a trip to Africa in 1963.
She undertook an extensive study of gorilla groups over a period of 18 years. Dian Fossey studied them daily in the mountain forests of Rwanda.
Dian Fossey developed an extraordinary bond with the gorillas she encountered and she made it her mission to bring the world's attention to the plight of the last remaining Mountain gorillas.
Sometime during the day on New Year's Eve 1977, Dian Fossey's favourite gorilla, Digit, was killed by poachers.
Dian Fossey subsequently created the Digit Fund to raise money for anti-poaching patrols.
The deaths of some of her most studied gorillas caused Dian Fossey to devote more of her attention to preventing poaching and less on scientific publishing and research.
In 1983, Dian Fossey had written a book "Gorillas in the Mist" to tell her story and to tell her findings from scientific study of the mountain gorilla .
Later, a Hollywood movie was produced based on this book.
Dian Fossey was murdered in 1985 in Rwanda.
If there is one person who deserves to be credited for making the world aware of gorillas and the troubles they face, it is Dian Fossey.
Without Dian's unfounded energy for the Mountain gorillas of central Africa, we might be living in a world where these magnificent animals no longer exist.

Thousands of intestinal viruses have now been mapped. And they can be used to fight antibiotic resistance.
A new method developed at the University of Copenhagen has been used to identify more than 1,000 different types of bactericidal viruses in the human intestines. The researchers behind the new study believe the discovery may help fight antibiotic resistance.
