PS1 Underrated Gem: One
This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the PS1. I'm playing on a PS2 with texture smoothing on.
Disclaimer: This is a very hard game, and won't be for everyone.
One is a Contra style romp for the PS1 that's also extremely overlooked.
It didn't get particular good ratings from most sources (GamePro's Major Mike gave it a good score though), and it does have it's share of problems. There are some levels made harder later on with tricky jumps. The jumping takes a little getting used to. OK, it takes a lot of getting used to. Those areas can be extremely frustrating if you don't give them your utmost concentration. The screen, at times, gets so cluttered with explosions that it's hard to see what you're doing. Also, some may find the game to be a little repetitive, but that's how any shooter of this type can be.
The checkpoints in the game are also few and far in between, extra lives are hard to come by as well, and you'll have to replay the entire level from the beginning when you continue.
All that aside, I still enjoy playing this game. It keeps it simple. Shoot everything, and that's what I like about it. It's also got an interesting life bar setup. In order to both gain your life, and upgrade your weapon, you have to destroy stuff. The more stuff you destroy, the higher you life goes, and the more powerful your weapon is.
This game is challenging (It's got three adjustable difficulties), but that's part of the appeal. At first this game will kick your ass. It's not a game that you're going to sit down and master in a day. It's got that oldschool style to it where you have to learn the game or it will school you. If you don't have a problem with that then check this game out. It's got all the challenge of a Contra title. If you frustrate easily, however, you'll probably want to skip this one.
One is actually similar to another PS1 game called Apocalypse (with Bruce Willis), except it came first. In fact, if you were a fan of Apocalypse, then One should be right up your alley.
Another Interesting fact is that this game is developed by Visual Concepts (of NFL 2K franchise fame) of all people.
One is only available on the PS1.
Note: This game is also damn near impossible to look up footage on on youtube, because of it's common name. I've actually had a vid of this game up for a long time, and I can't even find it when I search the game up on youtube.
I also forgot that if you hold L1, he'll keep his gun aimed in the direction you're facing and you can strafe left to right. As you can see I don't use that maneuver in this vid, but I remembered it after I had captured the footage.

Here are the games I played for the week of 11-08-2009.
This was another slow week for me playing games. I've been busy with other things, but I was able to get some NES play time in. Once again, games like this are great to pick up and play, and it's up to you how much depth, or time you put into them.
The Games:
Bad Dudes (Nes)-
I got this in the mail this week. I played it a few times years ago at a friends, and remember liking it. From what I hear the NES version isn't that great compared tot he original Arcade version, but who cares? I don;t happen to have an arcade cabinet in my gaming room, so the NES port will do just fine.
This port is still perfectly playable, and has a coop option. I've only really played past the first level each time I played. I think I've only played it about three times this week, but I've already figured out how beat the first boss easily.
BTW, this and Kabuki I got in the mail this week, and they were ex rental copies. What the hell is wrong with some people when they rent things? I had to clean the hell out of them inside and out. Granted they're cartridges, and are durable, but the treatment rentals receive is atrocious.
Batman (Nes)-
This is one that's haunted me since my childhood. I've never been able to beat it without the use of a Game Genie.
I think it's a great game, with some really awesome music to boot, but it's damn hard. Maybe I should give it a full try to beat it once and for all someday.
There are a number of old games that I could never beat when I was younger, but can now beat, so maybe I should just keep trying on this one.
Kabuki Quantum Fighter (Nes)-
This is one that I only recently heard about. What can I say, during the NES days, word about every NES game wasn't so easy to spread. There was no internet to go on forums, or post vids about underrated games in order to get the word out. At least not in a modern equivalent.
I got this in the mail with Bad Dudes earlier this week, and I'm liking what I've played of it. So far, I can only get to the third level of the game, and then I get my a** handed to me, but what do you expect from one week of casual play?
It's a fun game that's worth a look. I never even remotely heard about it back in the day, but the world was a bigger place back then, and who knows if it even released in my area?

Released on both the Xbox 360, and the PS3 (The Version shown in this footage), Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom is a unique, action/adventure/puzzle game that sees the main character, Tepeu, contrilling the Majin to solve puzzles, and fight enemies. The art direction in the game is beautiful, artistic, and sets the atmosphere nicely. Combined with the action-adventure mixture of combat an puzzles, you have something that feels a little like Prince of Persia, but with a giant ally to control and help you though the game.
I haven't played too far into this one as of yet, but if this game does interest you, I suggest picking it up as soon as possible. My prediction, and I hope I am wrong, is that this game is going to go up in price soon for both systems. I can already see some $50+ listings, but it seems, at the time of writing this, the 360 version is going for around $20-$30, and the PS3 version is going for even more. The strange thing about collecting for PS3 vs 360, is that the cross platform games are usually more expensive on the PS3. That's why it is best to have both systems to get some better deals.
Overall, I really like what I have played of this game so far. If it looks like something you would be interested in playing, pick it up soon.

The only one of these I haven't owned since childhood is Super Dodge Ball. The rest I have owned for 3 decades or or close to that amount of time. Oddly enough, Little Nemo is one of the those games I was much better at as a kid than I am now. Granted, even then I could only ever make it to the train level, except for that time we borrowed a Game Genie from our cousin. Beat it then.

This is only the second time ever I have booted this game up. I never played it back in the day. Solid platformer, but a slower-paced one. I'm guessing that is because it was marketed to kids. I'm not good at this game, but good game to look into. I'm not sure how it stacks up against Castle of Illusion, but I've heard more about Castle than World, so I'm guessing Castle is the one fans liked better.

This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the PS2.
Way of the Samurai is another one that never gets much mention despite being a really good game. It's a samurai adventure game, and it's hard to completely explain.
Do you remember those old choose your own adventure books? No, well in those books, you got to make your way though them by choosing what the next actions of that character were. They'd give you a choice, and you choose it, and depending on what you chose, your outcome would be different. It's the same concept with the way Way of the Samurai plays. The game is relatively short, but you never play through it the same way twice. It's got the whole ground hogs day thing going for it too where you'll have to play through it over and over again, but it'll still take you quite a while to see everything the game has to offer.
what may turn some people off to this game is that you only get to save at certain points, and there's no reloading your data. It actually deletes it once you load it, so you have to play until you either beat it, or you die.
That being said, you keep all the swords, and earned abilities that you get throughout the game when you start back at the beginning next time, so it makes things easier as you go along.
It's a really unique game that puts a really unique twist on things. I wholeheartedly suggest it to anyone.
Way of the Samurai is only on the PS2.
It also has a PS2 sequel Way of the Samurai 2.

I would like to thank Youtube user Sonicking917 for informing me about this game's existence. I just picked this game up today for a mere $9.99 off of Steam, and while I am terrible at Centipede in all forms, I can already say this is a good buy, and I will get a lot of enjoyment out of it.
Centipede: Rebirth has Arcade and challenge modes which I show in this footage. Again, I am not good at this game, and never have been, but I have become a big fan of Cenetipede in recent years despite not being an Atari-aged gamer. Adamvision Studios did a really good job on this remake, and it is available on pretty much every platform out there (PC, PS4/5, Xbox One/Series X, Switch), and even has VR support. If you are a Centipede fan, give this a look.

This is some gameplay of the opening level of Turok 3. I'm playing as the girl in the footage.
I really dig the single-player direction they went with this turok. The design is more reminiscent of PC FPS like half-Life. Even though the first Turok will always be my favorite in the series, I'd say that Turok 3 is still a good game even if it doesn't capture the feel of the first two.
It has been years since I did a full single player run of this game. So I can't remember fully what my thoughts were, I do remember not liking the weapons as much in this one as I did in the previous ones. They just didn't feel as satisfying to use which is sort of a sin for a Turok game.
I do like the fact that you have the choice of two different characters, a brother and sister, and that each has their own branching pathways in each level. It's bot multiplayer isn't as good as the one in Rage Wars, but it's decent.
Overall, it is a quality game made by Acclaim, and though we could probably argue over which Turok is the best on the N64, I will say that I easily liked all N64 Turoks better than Evolution, and I definitely liked them all much better than the Turok released a few years back on the 360/PS3.
