This Week in Foolery (Cleveland Voice Actor, Dixie Chicks, White Lives Don't Matter, etc)
We look at some of the crazy, astonishing and absurd things that happened this week, including:
- the voice actor for Cleveland stepping down because characters of color should be voiced by people of color - the Houston Association of Realtors is replacing “master” with “primary” on its online property database - the Dixie Chicks renaming to "The Chicks" - the Cambridge professor who says "White Lives Don't Matter" ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAQsSEW0p6o

A few days ago I rewatched a talk that Jordan Peterson gave at the oxford union back in 2018. An idea that he shared during the Q&A portion in response to one of the students’ questions really got me mulling over the phenomenon of ideology, particularly in the realm of politics. Peterson was making a point in the context of a question about free speech and hate speech, but I think something more general, and in some ways, profound can be abstracted or generalized from Peterson’s idea. I’ll play part of the clip of Peterson’s answer, but just to summarize: a student asked, what I think, is a very well reasoned question which was: if one of the primary purposes of the freedom of speech is the recognition that the more voices and opinions that are heard, the more likely we are, collectively, to arrive at the truth, what are we to do about certain speech that is so offensive, so degrading to a person that the target of that speech is made to feel they don’t belong and are not welcome in public discourse that they refrain from contributing their ideas resulting in their views being absent from the public dialogue thereby detracting from the pursuit of truth. Put another way, the question is: given that free speech is not a value in itself, but is only valuable in service of a purpose, that purpose being arriving at the truth through competing ideas and robust debate, could it not make sense to forbid certain types of speech because they contribute nothing towards this goal and, in fact, detract from it. This is the notion of the marketplace of ideas, a concept developed by before the enlightenment, then picked up and expounded upon by enlightenment thinkers and perfected by thinkers such as John Stuart Mill in his book “On Liberty”.
Jordan’s answer was very interesting. He did not deny that hate speech does exist, that it’s a problem and that it could have precisely the negative impact the student was pointing out. So what do you do about it? Jordan suggested that you let those who wish to utter hateful speech do so and let everyone hear them bc that’s the best way to make sure what they’re saying will be understood and rejected. He points out that, of course, this presumes that the population of people who will hear that speech is wiser than it is foolish. If we don’t assume that, then there’s no justification for the assertion that the ideas will be rejected by allowing them to be heard out in the open. Notwithstanding this, Jordan DOES ac

Our social and political culture appears to be edging off the precipice. It's not at all clear whether we can return from the brink. The only tool we have available to turn the ship around is honest conversation.
It's precisely the most uncomfortable conversations -- the ones outside of the Overton window -- that we need to be having a society. To do that, we need to understand the sociological and ideological undercurrents that are shaping our world.
That's what the Political Preamble channel is about. The goal is exploring these forces from first principles and explaining them in clear language. We are doomed unless we shine a light on the ideologies that are taking root in and shaping our institutions.

Someone on Twitter has highlighted that the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC hung up a guide to “whiteness & white culture”. It lists examples of “white dominant culture” that have become “normalized” in America and are used to prevent people of color from gaining institutional power.
Basically, the Museum of African American History is saying that hard work and nuclear family are NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF WHITENESS

Tucker Carlson rolled back the tape, showing a segment from Don Lemon's show in 2013. Lemon made points that the Left would now label as RACIST.
Tucker EVISCERATES Don Lemon with old CNN video
Carlson declared that “if you're running a channel like CNN, you want dumb people on TV because they are compliant,” “say what they’re told,” “tell the audience what the moment demands,” and “will never stray from the script.”

Far left ideology is riddled with contradictions. In truth, ideology in general is plagued by contradictions, not just far left ideology. This is so by the very definition of ideology which is a set of beliefs of philosophies which are often held for reasons that are not purely epistemic. Ideology appeals to people precisely for this reason - it obviates the need to think for yourself and to analyze the reality before you, a reality that is often subtle and complex.
Far Left or woke ideology is laden with so many internal contradictions that it is nearly impossible even for someone who wishes to signal their acceptance of it to keep it all straight. Since there is no internal logic to it, it becomes an exercise in memorization in which adherents have to reference spreadsheets to identify which beliefs are acceptable within the far left canon.
Take the far left’s relationship with science. The Left often criticizes the right wing for its supposed rejection of science. The Left now espouses the belief that gender and sex are social constructs not grounded in biology. Of course, any biologist will tell you that gametes are binary, namely egg and sperm. Sex, therefore, is binary as well.
It may be true that gender—the behavioral expression of sex—is far more variable, continuous even. But it is still noting like “a bell curve” as leftists claim. Even if gender is bimodal and fluid, that does negate the 500+ million years of binary sex.
Still, in other cases, the Left insists on rigid scientific and biological explanations. It is not uncommon in the context of abortion debates, for example, to hear leftists protest referring to an unborn fetus as a baby or a child. These terms, they insist, are not scientific at all and we can only refer to a fetus. Baby, they say, is not a scientific term.
This inconsistency, namely playing fast and loose with biology in the case of gender and sex discussions, while demanding rigid biological terminology in the case of abortion, is a pure expression of ideology. Science is held up as the arbiter when it’s convenient and casually dispenses with when it is not.
In all cases, the conception of reality precedes observation and an attempt to understand the phenomenon. A person who is seriously involved in the pursuit of the truth first carefully gathers the facts and then, guided by reason and various cognitive tools, such as Occam's razor, tries to uncover the underlying, more foundational causes that account for the phenomena he observes. Ideology, on the oth

BREAKING: Seattle City Council moves to abolish the entire Seattle Police Department and replace it with a "civilian led Department of Community Safety & Violence Prevention."
They want to replace the police force with nonprofit programs and "community-led activities."
In the proposed legislation, the council argues that the Seattle Police Department "[perpetuates] racism and violence" and upholds "white supremacy culture."
The council endorses the "Decriminalize Seattle" agenda that would replace the police force with:
–"Culturally-relevant expertise rooted in community connections"
–"Housing, food security, and other basic needs"
–"Trauma-informed, gender-affirming, anti-racist praxis"
And finally, the plan demands that the City conduct an "immediate transfer of underutilized public land for BIPOC community ownership"—in essence, the redistribution of land, which is a hallmark of Marxist regimes
