Floating Gardens Mexico City: How the Chinampas in Xochimilco Have Fed the City for 500 Years
An incredible sight, the floating gardens of Mexico City have a history dating back over 3,000 years! These man-made islands grow delicious fruits and vegetables to help feed the fifth largest city in the world. Today, over 90% of the islands are abandoned, threatening to extinguish a critical link to the farming history of Mexico.
We met up with Ricardo, the founder of De la Chinampa, an organization which works with the farmers of the floating town of Xochimilco to supply some of the top restaurants in Mexico City with delicious produce. That help doesn't end with sales, either. De la Chinampa trains future farmers, restores chinampas, and promotes the techniques of these unique farms. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987, the canals and islands were formed by farmers during the Toltec era and later the Aztecs, with the peak of production around 1600AD. With the severe declines over many generations of farming, today less than 10% of the available chinampas are actively used as farmland. De la Chinampa aims to reverse that trend, and we toured one of their active farms to see how farmers grow delicious crops in the middle of a lake.

After looking at all sort of "toads" or tow flat vehicles for pulling behind our 2019 Winnebago Navion 24D RV, we finally found the one for us! Let us introduce you to our "New" old car! ? Now the race is on to get everything setup for towing flat before we leave for Mexico. Not bad for deciding last minute to buy another car instead of a scooter!
I (Howard) ran out of time to do some of the work myself, and was lucky to connect with the team over at Pro Fab Performance Plus for a same day install of the baseplate.
We also give a quick walk-through of our towing setup, including Blue Ox tow bar, safety cables, and a Blue Ox Patriot braking system.

Some might associate ‘boondocking’ or free camping with van life or that it’s only achievable for smaller rigs. We’re here to help break that idea! While we travel in a 25ft Winnebago Navion Class C, we have several friends with large Fifth Wheels and Class A RVs who boondock often in similar spots. The 5 (+ a bonus location) campsites below are all locations we’ve personally camped in and are easily accessible for RVs of any size!

If you only have 48 Hours to explore CDMX, we show you cool things to do in Mexico City! Hop on a food tour with us in the Roma neighborhood as we sample 7 dishes in one day, plus enjoy a delicious meal in a hidden courtyard near Zocalo! Come explore the city center of the 5th largest city in the world!
We met up with Eduardo, local guide with Secret Food Tours, to help us discover some of the most authentic spots for classic Mexican dishes like mole, and also sample delicious newer options like Octopus tacos. Winding our way through the Roma neighborhood, we learned about the history and culture with just enough food stops to keep us energized! It's a day we won't forget, and Katelyn definitely braved her way through the (habanero) heat of several different bites!
The next day after getting our work done, we set out to discover more cultural sites in the Zocolo neighborhood, one of the oldest areas of Mexico City. Many places didn't make the edit, but we will have a follow-up blog post listing all the places to see in this incredible neighborhood. Be sure to see the slanted buildings around Moneda Avenue!

Millions visit, but very few venture below the rim of the Grand Canyon, but those brave enough to face the steep, cliff-side path often do so via The Bright Angel Trail. It’s a total of 12.2 miles round trip to Plateau Point, and this hike is one we won’t soon forget.
We were feeling especially adventurous as we woke up at 3:30 am to drive to the trail head, located on the South Rim near the Bright Angel lodge. With almost 3,000 feet of elevation change, this hike isn’t for the faint of heart. Going down was the relatively easy part, coming back up challenged us both mentally and physically.
Descending in the dark and watching the glow of the upcoming sunrise paint the canyon various shades of blue, purple and ultimately vibrant red was as epic as it sounds. Once the sun peeked around the canyon corner, an almost ethereal rainfall made it seem like we were walking through a living dream.
Our end destination was 1.5 miles past Indian Garden at Plateau Point, an awesome overlook that gives you 360-degree views of the canyon walls you just conquered while getting a birds eye view of the emerald green Colorado River below. Having arrived at our destination around 8:30 am, we knew our time at the point would be short so we could make the daunting climb back to the top before the intense heat set in.
We made great (somewhat incredible) time back to the rim, climbing 6 miles and 2800 feet of elevation in just four hours. The last mile was the hardest ever, having to will our feet to take one step more.
We retreated to our home on wheels, which was conveniently parked for free only one mile from the Grand Canyon National Park entrance in Kaibab National Forest. With towering pine trees and a nearby horse trail, this boondocking spot was a forest oasis. Join us on Patreon for exclusive access to lots of benefits including map pins of campsites like this one.
We even got to take our three dogs into the park one day since the rim trails at the Grand Canyon are dog friendly! Scout checked off her first National Park, while Piper and Ella have lost count of how many they’ve visited.
We’re happy to report that after visiting the Grand Canyon for the first time, thanks to this epic hike, Katelyn is no longer anti-Grand Canyon.
