“My Sheep” is Christ's
Powerful Term for Believers
When you think about it Jesus comes as the Lamb, He calls His Church His flock, He calls Himself the True and Good Shepherd, and He calls those who lead His Church in His stead: shepherds (that is the meaning of the Greek word poimen), and it is usually translated pastor.
There is only one designation of Christ that fills the New Testament. We are His sons and daughters, and His disciples and servants, but the most integrated term, into the fabric of the early church, was we are sheep, Christ is our Shepherd, and those who guard Christ's flock are shepherding, pastors.
Jesus calls us as believers more by one term in the Gospels “My Sheep” than any other term among those found outside the Gospels. My sheep is His description of us.
Why does God
Call us His sheep?
It may be because sheep are the most helpless creatures known in the world of zoology. They always lose their way. In the amazing aggregation of entertainment and instruction that modern man calls the circus, we have seen almost every known animal perform, but we have never seen a trained sheep.
A dog or cat, all the farm animals, and everything that can be caught in traps may be taught to perform for the amusement of man with the apparent exception of the sheep.
Perhaps the Lord God, considering the utter helplessness of the human family, just shook His head and said, “We will call them sheep.”
What Jesus Sees in
Us His Sheep
1. As Sheep: We Need His Constant Guidance.
Sheep are UTTERLY HELPLESS and cannot find their way without a guide…. Though there be pasture within easy reach, the sheep is apparently incapable of finding it for itself. It must have a guide. So God, looking at stupid, lost humanity, said, “All they like sheep have gone astray.”
2. As Sheep: We Need His Constant Cleansing.
Sheep are among the dirtiest animals associated with man. The natural tendency of wool in its raw and wild state is to pick up any defilement with which it comes into contact.

Point One: ONLY God's Word Can
Describe the True Heaven
So, beware of whenever Heaven is described differently than how God has described it so clearly in His Word.
How about this book with such a beautiful cover, so beautiful that five million copies were sold in just the first 9 months, and over seven million and climbing. It is still in the top 100 selling books for 55 weeks on the NYT bestsellers listing.
The online encyclopedia of publications listing states:
Todd Burpo, a Christian pastor, says that during the months after emergency surgery, Colton began describing events and people that seemed impossible for him to have seen or met. Examples include his miscarried sister, who no one had told him about, and his great grandfather who died 30 years before Colton was born[2]. Colton also claims that he had personally sat in Jesus' lap, while the angels sang to him[3][4][5], and that he saw the Virgin Mary standing beside Jesus in Heaven[6].
What Should We Do When
We Hear Claims Like That?
Paul said in his very first letter to a local church of believers, that they were to test everything against the doctrines taught in God's Word, and only hold onto as truth what matched the doctrines from God (I Th. 5:21). So, how does Colton’s story of Heaven match up with God's Word? Not very well.
Here is a quick Biblical analysis of the doctrines of God's Word vs. the doctrines Colton explained to his parents that are now coming out in a children’s version so that millions of children can be taught doctrines that are not from God:
Heaven is For Real is a book that chronicles, supposedly, the trip of a four-year-old during an appendectomy to heaven. He went to heaven, came back. You would think that a book like that couldn’t fall off a shelf, let alone have somebody take it off a shelf and buy it. But five million were sold in the first nine months…five million books in which a four-year-old describes what he saw in heaven while he visited there during his appendectomy.
He saw the Father, he says, who has wings like Gabriel. [DOCTRINE CHECK: Does God have a body? No, God is a Spirit. He is not material but spiritual, and has no wings. By the way, the Bible never says that angels have wings, only Seraphim and Cherubim have wings. Gabriel was seen by Daniel 2x, Zacharias 1x, and Mary 1x, and none of those three who actually saw Gabriel ever describe wings.]
He saw Jesus who has blue eyes and is only half as tall as Michael and shorter than Gabriel. But though He’s really short, He’s more powerful than the rest of them and He rides a rainbow horse that only He can ride.[DOCTRINE CHECK: We know exactly what Jesus Christ looks like in Heaven. John wrote an inspired word picture in Rev. 1.]

Jesus taught such a comforting, hope-filled message of His return to rescue His Church before the Tribulation, that His disciples went everywhere teaching this same truth.
When Paul had only a month in a pagan city where he planted a church, the Rapture was central to their doctrine.
The Rapture was First Taught by Jesus
The Rapture is a doctrine started and taught by Jesus, continued and spread by His disciples, and believed and passionately lived out by His Church. The early church heard and understood this doctrine of Christ’s any-moment return, and radiantly lived, looking for ways to please Him when He came to rescue them.
James in the first NT letter said that Christ was standing at the door (5:7). The second NT book was I Thessalonians and every chapter shines with Rapture-induced hope-filled expectancy (1:9-10; 2:19-20; 3:13; 4:13-18; 5:23).
Paul’s epistles start to finish, are seasoned with the flavor of a focused life awaiting Christ as in Philippians 3:20 where we as citizens of Heaven await Jesus eagerly, as Paul confesses in his last words of II Timothy 4 where he talks about His crown “at that day” when Jesus comes.
Peter says the same, going so far as asking what kind of lives should we live because we know the future (II Peter 3:11 ). John’s Epistles are the same, in I John 3:2-3 he says that this “hope” causes us to purify our daily life looking for Christ’s coming.
In Revelation 3:7, Jesus Christ identifies Himself to the Church at Philadelphia as the One who is True, Holy, and has the unstoppable Messianic Key of David. When Jesus speaks He tells the Truth. When we listen to Him and hear what He says we can have confident assurance that He knows what He is talking about.
Jesus Christ taught repeatedly (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21) that His 2nd Coming is to Judge the ungodly. That was the content of every sermon on the future that He ever preached. Each sermon was taught in the context of Israel, was focused upon the Jews, and involved the city of Jerusalem and the nation of Israel.
The Rapture is Not The 2nd Coming
But, when Jesus spoke to believers His emphasis was different. Jesus taught His own born-again children of the faith, three bedrock truths about the Rapture or His coming for His Church.
These truths are that: the Rapture will be a source of comfort; the Rapture will be similar to the Ascension; and that the Rapture will be an intentional rescue.
Those truths, taught by Jesus Christ Himself, constitute the Biblical, doctrinal basis for all that the early church was later taught by the Apostles and which extends to us throughout all the centuries since Christ’s ministry.

Satan is Leading a Global Rebellion Against God
The only key to correctly understanding history comes from God’s Word. God’s Word explains to us the struggle going on behind the pages of history is that Satan is a rebel.
First, as Lucifer, the greatest and most powerful creature God ever made, Satan rebelled against God and lost his position as the anointed cherub (Isaiah 14, Ezekiel 28) and became Satan, the adversary of God.
Next, Satan led a third of the angels of God in rebellion against God (Rev. 12:4), and they become Satan’s demon warriors, following with him in his ongoing rebellion against God.
Then, Satan goes on to enlist humanity in his rebellion against God by tempting Eve (Genesis 3) and leading Adam into sin.
Finally, at the Tower of Babel, Satan devises a global spread of his rebellion through false religion and materialism.
God had made a way for mankind to be redeemed, by a substitutionary, sacrificial, blood-sprinkled, way. But Satan wanted at all costs, to obscure and confuse God’s Way. To do so Satan devised snares to catch humans up in his rebellion.
When God describes the world’s end at the close of the Tribulation, He devotes two entire chapters of Revelation to detail the end of Satan’s twin pathways of rebellion.

EZEKIEL
“WORSHIPING OUR GOD OF THE NEW HEART”
In 598 BC Ezekiel was taken captive with 10,000 other fellow Judeans by Nebuchadnezzar. He arrives in Babylon at the age of 25 (II Kings 24:8-16; Ezekiel 1:1-2). He had a lovely wife (16:2) who died (24:16-18).
He lives in a house during the exile to which numerous captives come and seeking counsel of him (8:1; 14:1; 20:1). After five silent years, he begins 20 years of speaking for God. Ezekiel like our Lord Jesus Christ began his ministry by a river at the age of 30. In an astounding vision he sees cherubim portraying the Divine attributes of God.
Ezekiel is God’s man.
He saw God and it changed his life.
I. GOD’S SERVANTS SUBMIT TO HIM.
A. THEY ARE OPEN TO GOD'S WORD Ezekiel 1:3 the word of the LORD came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and there the hand of the LORD came upon him. (NASB)

The ONLY Protection from Satan is The Signature of God
When you call upon Christ in repentant faith, God saves you. Salvation is the greatest work of God in the universe. I like to call the work of salvation the signature of God. When God writes Himself--across our lives.
Listen to this summary of what happens to each of us who come by faith to God through Christ.
1. REGENERATION: When God Changes my Heart. Ezekiel 36:26-27 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Only God can do this!
2. CONVERSION: When God Changes my Life. Matthew 18:3 and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Only God can do this!
3. REPENTANCE: When God Changes my Mind. Matthew 3:8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, Only God can do this!
4. ADOPTION: When God Changes my Family. Romans 8:14-17 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. Only God can do this!
5. SANCTIFICATION: When God Changes my Behavior. Hebrews 10:14-16 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” Only God can do this!
6. JUSTIFICATION: When God Changes my State. Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, Only God can do this!
7. GLORIFICATION: When God Changes my Place. John 17:24 “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. Only God can do this!
Note these truths in your Bible, believe them in your heart, live them out each day, then share them as you act on the reality of God’s Signature across your life!

Jesus said that eternal life is all about following Him; and He summarized His entire plan for the disciples in just two words: “Follow Me” (Matthew 4:19). Those two words were what He spoke to Peter, Andrew, James and John as they fished and to Matthew as he sat at the tax office (Luke 5:27); and those two words are what He still calls for as He walks through this world.
This morning, are you personally following Jesus? Does your day revolve around Him: as you start the day with seeking Him, as you go through the day serving Him, and end the day with thanking Him? Believers are Christ's personal followers in a Christ-less world.
Jesus explained as He taught, that His disciples were those who heard His voice, became His sheep, and “followed” Him (John 10:27). Jesus called those followers His disciples or “learners”. The Gospels are a record of how disciples spent time with Jesus for over 3 years watching, listening, and most of all “following” Him.
Jesus called Himself the “Way”; and described salvation as the beginning a life-long journey of following Him (John 14:6). This call to a life of following needs to at times be renewed as Jesus demonstrated after His resurrection, when Peter was restored to ministry as Jesus again said “follow” Me (John 21:19).
Are We
His Followers?
So Christ's plan was to have close, personal “followers” who were also learners and doers of His Way. They listened and followed Him as they learned from Him how to do what He did.
Then book of Acts goes on to describe the early believers as those who were “followers” of Christ Jesus, the Way:
Acts 9:2 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. NKJV
Acts 18:25-26 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John.26 So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. NKJV
Acts 19:9, 23 But when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. 23 And about that time there arose a great commotion about the Way. NKJV
Acts 22:4 “I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women, NKJV
Acts 24:14, 22 “But this I confess to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect, so I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets. 22 But when Felix heard these things, having more accurate knowledge of the Way, he adjourned the proceedings and said, “When Lysias the commander comes down, I will make a decision on your case.” NKJV
The Church at the beginning was simple, everyone was following Jesus, acting so much like Him they were described by unbelievers as little-Christ-imitators or “Christ-ians”. As the church gathered, they were taught that every facet of their lives were to be reflective of what they learned while following Jesus personally.

God has had His eye on one very special piece of property for a long time.
• It is the spot that God's Word tells us in Genesis 14 that the mysterious Biblical character named Melchizedek lived; who was called the King of Righteousness, and lived in this place then called Salem or “the city of peace”. We know so little about this mysterious figure from the Scriptures (he just may have been the oldest son of Noah named Shem) but we do know that is was on that spot he lived; and
• It is the spot that God sent Abraham to when he brought Isaac his son to be an offering in Genesis 22; and
• It is also the spot where David’s sacrifice stopped the angel of Death (I Chronicles 21) and the purchased ground where Solomon built the Temple. But most of all,
• It is the same spot where God Himself took human flesh, suffered, bled, died, rose from the dead, and ascended into Heaven.
• It is also the spot where 50 days later the Church was born on Pentecost.
• It is finally the spot to which Jesus will return when He comes as Israel’s Messiah to save them, end the Tribulation, and usher in the Millennial Kingdom.
That spot is Jerusalem, and more specifically the ridge of a mountain called Moriah.
Jerusalem: Center of
Redemptive History
So according to the Bible, Jerusalem is the center of redemptive history; and Jerusalem is also the place where human history will end. All of that is attached to just this one spot, in one city called Jerusalem.
