#37: Muslims chose their Final CANONICAL Qur'an just 99 YEARS AGO!
Did you know that the Qur'an that 93% of the Muslim world uses today, called the 'Hafs' Qur'an was only chosen 99 years ago, and then finally chosen as the Qur'an for the whole Muslim world just 38 years ago?

Why, you ask, did they wait so late to choose it?

To answer that we need to return to the last century, to 1924 to be more precise, and to the department of Education in the city of Cairo, Egypt. They were having problems with standardized high-school tests for their students, as they were getting conflicting answers with students who were quoting directly from a multiplicity of Qur’ans, or rather from 30 Qur’ans to be exact. How can you have standardized test results with over 30 different answers?

To solve their problem, they went to Al Azhar University, considered to be the best Islamic University in the world, and asked a scholar there named Muhammad b. ‘Ali al-Husayni al-Haddad to choose just one from amongst the 30 as the official Qur’an for their schools.

He chose the 796 AD ‘Hafs’ Qur’an for all the high schools, but just for Cairo.

And what did the Caireen high school officials do with the other 29 "Corrupted" ‘variant Qur’ans’?

They gathered together all the Qur'ans from the 29 other Qira'at readings and threw them into the Nile River, and sank them…thinking that would get rid of them…

Little did they know that you can still buy all of them, even today…as Hatun Tash has done, 26 of which we held up for the whole world to see back on August 7th, 2016.

The government of Egypt realized how efficient the Cairene model was and decided to make the Hafs the standard for all Qur’ans to be used in Egyptian schools in 1936.

That 1936 Hafs Qur'an was known as the ‘Faruq Edition’, named after King Faruq, who came to power that year.

The government of Saudi Arabia realized how efficient the Egyptian model was, so they decided to make the Hafs Qira'at the standard for all Qur’ans world wide in 1985.

This was known as the ‘Fahd Edition’, named after King Fahd, who had come to power in 1982.

That means that the Qur'an we use today, the 'Hafs' edition has really only been the official Qur'an for 38 years, which means that I and many of you who were living in 1985 are now older than the official Muslim Qur'an...which makes me feel old indeed!
