The essays in this book respond to Anna-Teresa Tymienieckas recent call to explore the relationship between the evolution of the universe and the process of self-individuation in the ontopoietic unfolding of life. The essays approach the sensory manifold in a number of ways. They show that theories of modern science become a strategy for the phenomenological study of works of art, and vice versa. Works of phenomenology and of the arts examine how individual spontaneity connects with the design(s) of the logos of the whole and of the particulars while the design(s) rest not on some human concept, but on life itself. Lifes pliable matrices allow us to consider the expansiveness of contemporary science, and to help create a contemporary phenomenological sense of cosmos.**From the Back CoverThe essays in this book respond to Anna-Teresa Tymienieckas recent call to explore the relationship between the evolution of the universe and the process of self-individuation in the ontopoietic unfolding of life. Our stories of industrial innovation tend to focus on individual initiative and breakthroughs. With Making Jet Engines in World War II, Hermione Giffard uses the case of the development of jet engines to offer a different way of understanding technological innovation, revealing the complicated mix of factors that go into any decision to pursue an innovative, and therefore risky technology. Giffard compares the approaches of Britain, Germany, and the United States. Each approached jet engines in different ways because of its own war aims and industrial expertise. Germany, which produced more jet engines than the others, did so largely as replacements for more expensive piston engines. Britain, on the other hand, produced relatively few enginesbut, by shifting emphasis to design rather than production, found itself at wars end holding an unrivaled range of designs. The US emphasis on development, meanwhile, built an institutional basis for postwar production. Taken together, Giffards work makes a powerful case for a more nuanced understanding of technological innovation, one that takes into account the influence of the many organizational factors that play a part in the journey from idea to finished product. **

The notion of view or opinion (ditthi) as an obstacle to seeing things as they are is a central concept in Buddhist thought. This book considers the two ways in which the notion of views are usually understood. Are we to understand right-view as a correction of wrong-views (the opposition understanding) or is the aim of the Buddhist path the overcoming of all views, even right-view (the no-views understanding)? The author argues that neither approach is correct. Instead he suggests that the early texts do not understand right-view as a correction of wrong-view, but as a detached order of seeing, completely different from the attitude of holding to any view, wrong or right. **

Scottish Highlanders, and their descendants all over the world, are no better and no worse than any other people where sinful behaviour is concerned. Standards of morality and social conventions changed dramatically during the 19th century and most of the people engaged in recording and commenting upon Highland life and tradition were puritanical ministers and priests who left out the racy bits. So, while there are many useful books that provide a wide range of Scottish Gaelic vocabulary to express many aspects of daily life except, for the most part, the topics covered in this book.**

Cosmopolitanism has emerged as a key category in Islamic Studies, defining models of Muslim mobility, pluralism and tolerance that challenge popular perceptions of religious extremism. Such celebrations and valorisations of mobility and trans-regional consciousness, however, tend to conflate border-crossing with opportunity and social diversity with ethical progress. At the same time, they generally disregard the ways in which such forms of cosmopolitanism have been entwined with structures of domination, economic control and violence. This volume addresses these issues in ways that help to contextualize contemporary issues such as the global refugee crisis in relation to longer histories of Muslim mobility and coercion. Featuring new historical and ethnographic research on China and Southeast Asia, this book explores how power and violence have shaped the experiences of Sufis and state-builders, as well as refugees and rebels, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of Islamic cosmopolitanism. **

In this luminous new collection of poems, Franz Wright expands on the spiritual joy he found in his Pulitzer Prize-winning Walking to Marthas Vineyard. Wright, whom we know as a poet of exquisite miniatures, opens Gods Silence with East Boston, 1996, a powerful long poem that looks back at the darker moments in the formation of his sensibility. He shares his private rules for bus riding (No eye contact the eyes of the terrified terrify), and recalls, among other experiences, his first encounter with a shotgun, as an eight-year-old boy (In a clearing in the cornstalks . . . it was suggested that I fire on that muttering family of crows). Throughout this volume, Wright continues his penetrating study of his own and our collective soul. He reaches a new level of acceptance as he intones the paradox I have heard Gods silence like the sun, and marvels at our presumptions We speak of Heaven who have not yet accomplishedeven this, the holiness of things precisely as they are, and never will! Though Wright often seeks forgiveness in these poems, his black wit and self-deprecation are reliably present, and he delights in reminding us that literature will lose, sunlight will win, dont worry. But in this book, literature wins as well. Gods Silence is a deeply felt celebration of what poetry (and its silences) can do for us. From the Hardcover edition.**
