Ethylene oxide, which caused the withdrawal of M&M, Snickers and Twix ice cream from the Serbian market, is described by the US Environmental Protection Agency as carcinogenic, but the health risk exists only due to long-term exposure, so those who ate several of these ice creams should not worry , says for Nova.rs toxicologist, prof. Dr. Petar Bulat.
The Serbian Ministry of Agriculture has received a warning from the European Union's rapid alert system that M&M, Snickers and Twix ice creams, imported from the EU, contain the stabilizer "Lygomme FM 4600 / Box25 / STD / E800" above the permitted limits, which was first detected by Spain.
Therefore, the withdrawal of these products from sale and the ban on their import began.
Professor Bulat explains for Nova.rs that ethylene oxide was found in these products, which is used in medicine, in addition to ionizing radiation, to sterilize syringe needles.
"It is a gaseous, unstable substance, which evaporates after sterilization," explains Bulat.
When asked how ethylene oxide was found in ice cream, he said that the ice cream manufacturer probably bought the additive from someone who did not have a clean enough production.
"Ethylene oxide is one of the starting substances for the production of ethylene glycol, which is used as antifreeze. I believe that this is a supplement that is in charge of not squeezing the ice cream too much, in order to make it creamier ", explains the professor.
Ethylene oxide, he says, can be very dangerous for someone who is exposed to extremely high concentrations, or if exposure to low concentrations lasts for a long time.
"High concentrations of this gas can be exposed to someone mainly through the respiratory organs. In that case, the respiratory tract irritation, coughing, tearing of the eyes occurs first. It can also lead to disorders of the central nervous system, but only in the case of extremely large doses ", explains the toxicologist.
The substance, he says, is mentioned by the US Environmental Protection Agency as carcinogenic, while the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies it as a substance for which there is limited evidence that it is carcinogenic.
"Americans associate long-term exposure to ethylene oxide with the occurrence of breast cancer in women and lymph node malignancies. The very fact that it is mentioned in that light shows that it is not convenient to find it in food. But there is certainly no danger for someone who has eaten several of the mentioned ice creams ".
