2nd Phoenix officer of 5 shot leaves hospital; woman killed is remembered as 'wonderful'
Sunday marked the third day of an investigation into a Friday morning incident that left two people dead and nine Phoenix Police Department officers injured. Police on Friday afternoon identified 36 year old Morris Jones as the suspect who they say fatally shot his former girlfriend before injuring officers at the scene near 51st Avenue and Broadway Road. After one officer was released from the hospital on Saturday. a second officer was released from the hospital Sunday and is recovering at home. while two officers remained hospitalized and are on the path to recovery. police said. The identities of the wounded officers were not released. Phoenix police said Sunday they do not plan to give more updates on the case until they release body camera video on Feb. 25. which is two weeks after the shooting. Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams implemented a policy in July 2020 that the Department will always release body camera video from officer involved shootings within two weeks of them happening. The scene of the shooting was quiet Sunday morning. There were no officers or investigators. and the yellow tape was taken down. The house where the shooting started was boarded up. Some cars that were driving by Sunday morning slowed down near the house but there were no neighbors walking up to it. Florida woman Jasmine Martinez uses pandemic loan to hire hitman to murder rival
A Florida woman used money from a pandemic relief loan to hire a hitman to murder a rival who had dated her ex boyfriend. police said. Jasmine Martinez allegedly used the federal Paycheck Protection Program to pay a gunman who fatally shot Le’Shonte Jones and wounded her 3 year old son in a broad daylight attack outside her Miami apartment on May 3. 2021. NBC 6 reported. Martinez had withdrawn more than $10.000 in the days before the shooting. after she netted $15.000 from the federal government she applied for to help her single employee beauty salon. according to an arrest warrant cited by the Miami Herald. Police also arrested alleged middleman Romiel Robinson and alleged hitman Javon Carter in relation to the murder of Jones. a Transportation Security Administration worker. Carter had allegedly filmed a video of himself counting cash just hours after Jones was shot multiple times. according to arrest warrants. “Just another day at the office.” Carter said on the video. according to the Herald. Attorneys for Martinez and Robinson said their clients had no part in plotting the killing. The TSA worker had allegedly been targeted by Martinez after several run ins that culminated with the victim testifying in a case against Martinez’s boyfriend. reports said. Martinez was arrested in 2016 after hitting Jones. who was dating Martinez’s ex — but that case was dropped. the Herald said. After Martinez was arrested in 2018 for allegedly beating up Jones again. Jones was attacked in the courthouse parking lot by two men. including Martinez’s new boyfriend Kelly Nelson. according to NBC. Jones was going to testify against Nelson but reported being harassed and offered a payoff to keep her mouth shut. according to the accusations against her. Robinson. who was reportedly Martinez’s latest boyfriend. served as a middleman and put his girlfriend in touch with the alleged hitman. NBC said. In April. Jones testified that she’d been attacked by Nelson and intimidated by Martinez.

New Mexico suspect goes on stabbing spree. injures nearly a dozen victims. police say
Police in Albuquerque. New Mexico. say nearly a dozen people were injured by a suspect who went on a stabbing spree while riding a BMX bike on Sunday. Local outlet KRQE. citing officials. reported that the suspect was wielding a 'long knife.' The Albuquerque Journal reported that one of the scenes was a homeless encampment. Albuquerque police said officers first responded to a reported stabbing around 11:15 a.m. in the area of Central Ave and 5th St N.W. Multiple stabbings were reported over the next several hours. APD told Fox News that the victims were transported to several hospitals. All were reported to be in stable condition. though two victims were listed as critical. Some victims were treated and released. police said. Police said the lone male suspect is in custody. 'They appear to be random. someone was involved with an accident here on Central. a person just came up and said they were stabbed. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason at this point.' San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin said Monday that his office has recently learned that the city’s police force has been using DNA taken from sexual assault victims to link them to crimes. potentially discouraging people who’ve been raped from coming forward. Boudin. who revealed details of his findings in an interview with The San Francisco Chronicle. said his office became aware of the practice last week when the San Francisco Police Department used DNA it had collected from a woman years ago as part of a rape exam in order to connect her to a recent felony property crime. A woman was stabbed to death inside her Chinatown apartment early Sunday after her alleged killer followed her home — and her final moments were caught on chilling surveillance footage. Prosecutors open door for possible reduced sentence for ex cop convicted of manslaughter
Minneapolis. MN – Former Brooklyn Center Police Officer Kim Potter will be sentenced at the Hennepin County Courthouse this Friday. Potter was found guilty of both first and second degree manslaughter in the death of Daunte Wright in December 2021. During Potter's trial. Matthew Frank. the lead prosecutor. had previously said the state would be seeking an enhanced sentence. However. state prosecutors filed a motion on February 15. which allow Potter to make her case for a downward departure. In the memorandum. the AG's office explained that if Potter can convince the court she can serve in society's best interests. she can face a lower sentence which includes the following penalties. if Judge Regina Chu allows: 'Defendant should serve one year in jail to reflect the seriousness of Daunte Wright’s death.Defendant should speak publicly about the dangers of weapon confusion to law enforcement agencies.Defendant should make herself available to the Wright family if they decide. at a time of their choosing. to speak with her about their loss.Defendant must remain law abiding; and defendant should be placed on probation for a period of 10 years.' '… For the Court to depart on this basis. Defendant would need to establish that society’s interests are better served. not just her own. She would need to show that something good can come of a probationary disposition.' the filing published by Minnesota AG Keith Ellison reads. If Potter cannot convince the court she can serve in society's best interest. the state’s presumptive sentence is 86 months. which is just over 7 years. In Minnesota. first degree manslaughter carries a maximum penalty of 15 years. Potter's sentencing hearing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
