PiHut Codemas Advent Calendar Day 2 - Raspberry Pi Pico and LEDs
This is day 2 of the PiHut Pico powered Advent calendar, where we add external LED's and get colourful.
We also can't stop ourselves getting creative and going a bit further.

In this video I use an ICStation Trackball (Blackberry style) and hook it up to a Sparkfun Microview - a controller with a display built in. I get this setup working, with a foray into a logic analyser and then use it to make a breaking-bricks-with-a-ball game.

The Trackball board was supplied by http://www.icstation.com, the microview was purchased from Sparkfun via kickstarter. The ideas and build are my own work.

Earlier this year I bought a heat gun to do some solder/desolder rework. I am considering using it to repair an old laptop (to see what I can learn from that), for mounting different devices or fiddling with SMD stuff in general.
The tool is the "SunGoldPower 858D Hot Air Rework Station".
I unbox it and check out the accessories.

I am going to be shaving my head and beard to raise money for Cancer Research for the month of October 2016.
Donations can be made here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Daniel-Staple
Cancer Research Uk is a charity close to my heart - and taking an active approach to improving the outlook for cancer will change lives.
Bold is deliberately spelled this way - me being shaved will be pretty conspicuous to those I am around!

Today Pheobe and I open drawer number 8 of the PiHut Codemad Calendar (19th December), and find a temperature sensor (a Dallas DS18B20 in a waterproof housing).
We wire it into the Raspberry Pi Pico, and test it on things around our lab. We get to see how nicely the Onewire library integrates in Micropython on the Pico.

The Vl53L0X is an optical (light-based) distance sensor. It uses light to detect how far things are away. Attach 2 of these sensors to a Raspberry Pi Pico on the same I2C bus and program them in Micropython.

02:52 The Code - the VL53L0X Micropython library
Wiring the VL53L0X board to the Raspberry Pi Pico
This is a perfect sensor for a robot, but is slightly tricky to use in Micropython. Using 2 of them is great if you want to sense 2 sides. I show more than one way to attach them and program them on the Raspberry Pi Pico.
Also - using Pycharm with Raspberry Pi Pico micropython using rshell and a bit of shell scripting.

This is slightly raw footage of my early moments with my Ormerod 2 3D Printer from reprap Pro. I am sill learning how to get good prints from it. The footage has come from December 2014.
I will be using it later in some robot builds

This is the fourteenth day with this electronic Sound Advent Calendar. This solderless breadboard kit builds component-by-component into an electronic synthesizer circuit. It suggests there is a new electronics experiment each day.
I open the fourteenth window in the calendar, then build the circuit and test it. This time, it looks to be solving the space issues we were having before and adding more functionality.
Expect bleepy noises!
