Troubleshooting and Fixing Backlash in the G0704 CNC Mill
The CNC mill has been acting up, so today we're on the hunt for backlash. We'll troubleshoot the Z axis and see if we can find the cause of our issues and fix them.
Today I'm cleaning up and restoring a set of Atco MOTO-CENTERS. These were/are also sold under the name Harig Lectric-Centers. These ones came from an eBay listing and the seller ended up being local to me. We made a deal. I brought them home. And now we get to find out together what I got.

Today we're going to make the hub for the diamond grinder, and we're going to use the single-point CNC broach we made last time to cut a keyway. This kind of operation is also sometimes called slotting on the vertical mill, and it'll be the first time I've tried it on my small machine.

Today we're going to test a bunch of different 3D printing filaments to see which is the strongest. Are carbon-fiber nylon filaments really as strong as the marketing would have you believe? Or is PLA stronger? Does the addition or carbon fiber make the filament weaker, as many have claimed? We're going to find out today. We'll put PLA, PETG, ABS, PA12-CF, and NylonX to the test. We'll measure deflection under load and ultimate breaking (tensile) strength and see what we can learn.

Okay, okay. I'm not going to send the chuck key out without some engraving. Today we'll use a carbide engraving tool in the high-speed spindle to put a maker's mark and some other details on the chuck keys, and we'll address some feedback from the comments on the last video. We'll talk about setting up Fusion 360 for engraving and generating the GCODE to run the machine.

Today we're making a set of aluminum riser feet for the surface gringer, because I'm too tall to use it, apparently. The wood blocks it has been sitting on are slowly crushing under the weight, and the machine will not stay level, so we're going to fix it once and for all today. We'll cut some hunks of aluminum round and turn up some pretty feet for the big girl.

Today we're troubleshooting why the Beelink computer cannot see the Centroid Ether1616 I/O board in my new CNC controller build. It turned out to be a really subtle (fun) issue. The system is running Centroid CNC12, with an Acorn and Ether1616 I/O Expander. And when we're done, it will all be working.
This appears to be a bug in the Realtek GbE network hardware of the Beelink computer. But there's an easy workaround.
