A recording of the first contacts heard on the new 472 - 479 kHz amateur band, which became available to VK amateurs on 1 January, 2013. Activity was heard as soon as the band became available.
The receiving setup comprised a homebrew NE602 upconverter feeding a Yaesu FT-817 transceiver. The converter's crystal is 4 MHz so 4.472 MHz on the dial is 472 kHz. The antenna was simply the ferrite loopstick in the converter.

Sydney's Manly - Warringah Radio Society held a Flagpole Day Contest to celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19).
Stations flying the Jolly Roger get extra points - hence the flag.
14 contacts were made - 12 on 40 metres and 2 on 20 metres.

It was the morning of the ARRL SSB DX contest but signals weren't as strong as expected and no contacts were made. So I stuck around and worked fellow VKs on 40m. Video was mainly put up to provide signal reports.
