Tenerife island is the largest of the Canary Islands. And we're sailing around it. Our circumnavigation takes us to the southern part of the island. Where the tourist resorts are, some good anchorages and Los Gigantes, The Giants. And the sailing goes from dead calm to sporty in just minutes. We moor at Garachico and have good look at the charming village.

Adele and I sail through traffic on our approach into Dakar. The girl gets off Galopin and we say good bye. She was great to have aboard. And the boat goes up on the beach. I'll be living up there for a few days. It's kinda of weird. Not for all cruisers, but great for me and Galopin.

Just about everybody at one point or another has had either the dream or the passing notion of getting on a boat and doing what I'm doing. And now after more than 2000 nautical miles along the coast of Spain, across to Africa and out into the Atlantic Ocean to Lanzarote Island in the Canaries, Winded Voyage sets out for a new season of discoveries and adventures on S/V Galopin.
Come along and follow an ordinary middle aged guy who finally goes and lives the dream discovering the world on a 40 foot sailboat.

We are nearing the end of our journey from Arrecife on Lanzarote island to Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Tenerife island. Leaving Puerto Megan on the southern side of Gran Canaria island, we were sheltered by the prevailing northern winds. I was warned of the acceleration zones between the islands, and with one reef in both sails I thought we were ready for what we are heading into. Boy was I wrong. The wind and waves hit us hard. Galopin was healing hard. It was the first time Seb said "Dad, I'm really scared here". We quickly took another reef and then a third and last reef and had the boat under control. But the waves were still battering us as we had to got upwind for several hours before we could begin to cross over to Tenerife overnight. It was the roughest sail we'd had together so far, no bullshit sailing.

I can't find my sailboat, but find myself back in my old profession. I get lost in the English countryside but find one of my old friends and Stonehenge. I'm back living my old life temporarily until I get back to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and find good old Galopin. My cousin and Patron comes to visit me and Galopin and together we discover extraordinary Tenerife Island.

Two points of view of living in Cabo Verde, Africa. Young people enjoying the May Day Holiday and glimpse of life in retirement for a Rolls Royce engineer. Life is not easy for everyone on the island of Sao Vicente, but at times everyone makes it look easy.

We go out again fishing for the monstrous Bluefin Tuna. And it's a fight. We're joined by dolphins, in fact we join them. They're hunting too and picking away at a school of sardines like finger food at a cocktail party. And then we get a glimpse of of the giant fish just before they let it go back into the deep blue. And there's more. I fix my auto pilot and say help my friend Nelli cast off.

Getting to really know a place is when you have gotten to really know the people. For me it's most notably Peixe. One of the first guys I met who helped me fix my outboard motor and invited us to his home over six months ago. He's with again a journey to Tarafal for Easter. There we meet more dear friends we have gotten to know, and they invite us to a big birthday party. We have to get back and the return journey is arduous, but easy with Peixe as crew. He's looking into hauling out my boat in Mindelo. But I we have to wait. So me and Nat decide to go to a sheltered cove just a few miles south of Mindelo that's known to locals, but not to passing sailors. We go and discover the hidden cove few know about.

Early in the morning it was about crossing the mean straight after ripping my main sail. And as usual the Canal do Sao Vicente was mean. But we managed just fine. We had breakfast and a rest just in time for Lily's birthday party the next day. Another never ending fiesta. But me and Peter get down to business and go and get our sails fixed. This is what sailing Galopin in Cape Verde Africa is about. It's my life, my Winded Voyage.
