Cuando se decide ir a alguna parte, también hay que decidir cómo se va a viajar. Recuerde que se utiliza el verbo modal can para hablar de una posibilidad supuesta:
It can be very cold in Alaska. - Puede hacer mucho frío en Alaska.
Can you walk to Langrish from here? - ¿Se puede caminar desde aquí hasta Langrish?
Fíjese en el uso de get seguido por la preposición to para preguntar en qué medio de transporte se puede llegar a distintos lugares. Por ejemplo:
get + to + lugar
How can I get to Staten Island? - ¿Cómo puedo llegar hasta Staten Island?
Para responder se puede usar este constucción seguida por la preposición by y el medio de transporte:
get + to + Staten Island + by + medio de transporte.
You can get to Staten Island by ferry. - Puede llegar a Staten Island en ferry.
Puede utilizar el adverbio there siempre que quede claro a qué lugar se refiere:
How can I get to The Isle of Wight? - ¿Cómo puedo llegar hasta la Isla de Wight?
The Isle of Wight? - ¿La isla de Wight?
Yes. How can I get there? - Si. ¿Cómo puedo llegar hasta allí?
You can get there by hovercraft. - Puedes llegar hasta allí en hidrodeslizador.
Sin embargo, una forma más corriente de contestar a estas preguntas consiste en utilizar el verbo go seguido por la preposición by, que en este caso se traduce por 'en':
go + by + medio de transporte
You can go by train or by coach. - Se puede ir en tren o en autocar.
Let´s go by taxi. - Vamos en taxi.
Observe algunos posibles medios de transporte que utilizan la preposición by:
by car - en coche
by train - en tren
by bus - en autobús
by bicycle - en bicicleta
by coach - en autocar
by taxi - en taxi
by plane - en avión
by ferry - en ferry
Pero:
on foot - a pie
on horseback - a caballo
Aunque en estos dos casos es más corriente utiliza el verbo relevante:

Las expresiones a little (un poco) y a few (unos pocos) se utilizan de la misma manera que las palabras much y many. La expresión a little se utiliza con sustantivos incontables:

a little food - un poco de comida
a little time - un poco de tiempo
a little money - un poco de dinero
Sin embargo, la expresión a few (unos pocos) se utiliza con sustantivos contables:
a few + sustantivo contable
a few potatoes - unas pocas patatas
a few minutes - unos pocos minutos
a few Swiss francs - unos pocos francos suizos
Tanto a little como a few se utilizan sobre todo en frases afirmativas:
I've got a little food. - Tengo un poco de comida.
He's got a few Mexican pesos. - (Él) tiene unos pocos pesos mexicanos.
Fíjese en la palabra only, que se utiliza para dar mas énfasis:
I've only got a little time. - Tengo sólo un poco de tiempo.
He's only got a few US dollars. - (Él) tiene sólo unos pocos dólares americanos.
Y también se puede utilizar a little y a few para responder de forma abreviada sin sustantivo:
Have you got any wine? - ¿Tienes un poco de vino?
Yes. A little. -- Sí. Un poco.
How many cigarettes have you got? - ¿Cuántos cigarrillos tienes?
A few. - Unos pocos.

La preposición on se utiliza para decir si algo está a la derecha o a la izquierda:
The station is on the left. - La estación está a la izquierda.
Central Park is on the right. - Central Park está a la derecha.
La preposición in se utiliza antes de los nombres de calles, plazas, parques, etc.:
The zoo is in Boot Street. - El zoo está en la calle Boot.
There´s a café in Central Park. - Hay un café en Central Park.
Is there a cinema in King´s Road? - ¿Hay un cine en la calle King´s?
La preposición near (cerca) se utiliza para indicar la situación relativa de algo con relación a otra cosa o al lugar que ocupa la persona que habla:
The camping site is near the wood. - El camping está cerca del bosque.
There´s a bank near the post office. - Hay un banco cerca de la oficina de correos.
Is there a bus stop here? - ¿Hay una parade de autobús cerca de aquí?
Observe que las palabras near y here se pronuncian de forma que riman perfectamente.
OPPOSITE / NEXT TO
Las preposiciones opposite (enfrente de) y next to (al lado de) indican la posición, relativa de una cosa respecto a otra:
The park is opposite the museum. - El parquet está enfrente del museo.
The bank is opposite the hotel. - El banco está enfrente del hotel.
North Street is next to West Street. - La calle North está al lado de la calle West.
Bill´s Café is next to the station. - El Café Bill´s está al lado de la estación.
Por lo tanto, todas las respuestas que se dan a la pregunta siguiente son posibles:
- Where´s the nearest pub? - ¿Dónde está el pub más cercano?
- There´s one over there, on the left. - Hay uno allí, a la izquierda.
- There´s one on the right - Hay uno a la derecha.
- There´s one near here. - Hay uno cerca de aquí.
- There´s one opposite Luigi´s Café. - Hay uno enfrente del Café Luigi´s.
- There´s one next to the factory. - Hay uno al lado de la fábrica.

Were those men Dutch? - ¿Eran holandeses aquellos hombres?
Was she there last night? - ¿Estuvo (ella) allí anoche?
Observe cómo serían las 'respuestas cortas´:
Were you at home today? - ¿Estabas en casa hoy?
Yes, I was.- Sí, estaba.
And were the children at home, too? - ¿Y estaban los niños en casa, también?
No, they weren't. - No, no estaban.
La palabra too puede traducirse por también´, además de otras significados que estudiaremos en otras clases.
