Game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. Game was released on the Nintendo 64
Master Quest Jr. was created by Emperor_Thamz, Rainchus, JaThePlayer, and Brotenko. Dark Star Edition was created by Shadeblade, using some assets of Master Quest Jr. as a base and for inspiration!
Gameplay, captions, editing and live/post-commentary done by myself.

If there's one thing that I love in life is Mario RPGs and Paper Mario is easily in the top 5 of those games. However, there was one thing that I had trouble finding available for this game. That thing was a good challenge. First off was the Paper Mario: Double Pain Challenge, that was kind of a cool happening, but sadly, it wasn't something that held up water after a while. Then when learning about all of the Paper Mario modding, I've discovered Master Quest and its Jr. version. After trying the former, I decided to go with the latter and it was certainly challenging and rather neat with some of the additions.
Then my friend, Mageknight404, clued me in on a new mod and it's one that I haven't dove too deeply in and to be fair, I am all for sharing information from Master Quest Jr. AND Dark Star Edition in the course of one video series. Here you will see a myriad of changes that may come to a shock to those that have not dabbled into the realm of Paper Mario modding and I want to be an advocate of how truly awesome the whole thing is becoming as of late.
Badges, items, enemies, bosses and even partners have all been modified to provide a unique experience that can only hint of things to come in the future. The randomizer was one thing and Master Quest Jr. was enough, here's hoping that this video might make you take the leap into the scene. But of course, please be sure to get familiar with the original. Because we wouldn't have this great modification without Intelligent Systems and Nintendo's efforts from the very beginning!
Hope you enjoy the video!

NOTE: Yes, I am aware that this video has some differences compared to the first one. Decided to do some live commentary instead of post. It… just doesn't feel right.

We'll be talking about our last two characters in this game and be introduced to some new situations. However, as you can expect, it would be foolish to neglect Alfred and Gebel as they are with some of the strongest and/or most useful tools at your disposal. Sometimes, you're gonna need more than high jumps, slides, and solid DPS to get through the rest of the game. These two will do a wonderful job showcasing just how valuable your weapon points are in this game.
Now… only if they could leave me some once they're all done with the shenanigans!
Thanks for watching and enjoy the video!

While Chill Penguin was a bit tricky, not all of the stages or bosses got the same exact treatment. Some of them received minor changes while others really got a retooling. We'll be experiencing a tale of two stages and its bosses. On the one side, Storm Eagle and his stage feel almost exactly like they are in the original; only more pain from the enemies and the maverick himself. On the other hand, Flame Mammoth's stage got the treatment I was hoping for and it's a good feeling to see him and his stage get a nice uplift!
Here's the list of the changes below:
- AI changes: Regular enemies, bosses and minibosses have had their AI enhanced, making them more responsive and faster, among other things.
- Enemy stat rebalances: Enemies have had their HP rebalanced and they usually deal more damage.
- Player stat rebalances: Ammo has been reduced, and each of the weapon's costs have been rebalanced. Damage done by weapons have been rebalanced as well (The Hadouken isn't a 1-shot anymore), both against regular enemies and bosses. Some weapons had their speed rebalanced. The body upgrade has been nerfed to 25% damage reduction.
- Infinite lives.
- Dialogue changes.
- Death counter in the pause screen.
- Each of the bosses can now be rebattled.
- Each of the Maverick stages can be exited without having beaten it first.
- Hadouken capsule only requires 1 visit. Doesn't require all stages beaten.
- Custom Title.
- Other rebalances and small additions.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a serious review of the game by any means. This is merely a fun little exercise of exploring games that are often overlooked, with a questionable reputation or deemed bad by the general gaming community. The ultimate critic will be you, the viewer, as your opinions are pretty much
Also NOTE: Fun Factor is the new term for Playability... Playability isn't exactly a word anyway, and the only reason why anyone would play a game again is BECAUSE of fun factor.
This game certainly took me by surprise, but I have to say it's... not bad. If you want a rundown of all my feelings on it. You can either look at the description further or give the video a watch. My only regret is that I only managed to play the first world and nothing more. Something that might dilute the score, but I do feel that it is likely going to stay around that score.
Nevertheless, I hope you'll enjoy this zany, charming yet somewhat flawed game. It certainly has some hope and will likely be Let's Played in the future!

Presentation: This game looks okay. While the graphics are somewhat bland, they don’t at least get in the way of one’s gameplay or cause undue confusions. The overworld isn’t too bad and does provide coherent themes to expect within the game. However, the graphics as a whole really do undersell the game. The music is also nothing to write home about, but it thankfully doesn’t go out of its way to damage the player’s ears TOO often. Just note that there may be some songs that’ll be rough around the eardrums. The camera really needs help when action gets to be a little too fast and some features, like the transformation timer, is too slow in following you at times.
Gameplay: This is par for the course from an Ocean game. It plays well enough where you don’t feel like you’re fighting the controls and the game does have some aspects that bring it above the typical platformer. However, progression can be terribly confusing for a new player with the system of puzzle pieces and keyes. Transformations can be a hit or miss when it comes to how they work. Physics are definitely spotty as well where you’ll bump off walls, get launched off slopes or stop dead on certain ground elements with no good reason. However, there is a game to be played and it gives you all the tools that you’ll need to make it happen.
Professionalism: Game does the minimum to inform the player of what’s what. It doesn’t leave you in the dark on MOST of the important p

NOTE: This is a re-do of an older LP, I'm doing this LP for myself and challenging myself in it as well. This is going to be a 5-heart only run, but I'll be keeping count of all the fortune dolls we'll run into as well!
Paranormal activity is still high within this dungeon but the finishing touches are being made here. Goemon and friends bring an end to this kidnapping caper and meet the man behind all of these strange events.

After all that hard work paying off, I think L'Arc and company deserves a vacation. We can't always be hard knocks and get 'er done, just think of these poor individuals' stress levels! As we finish up in Ebur, we soon realize the terrible truth: we STILL don't have a ride yet. Welp, looks like we're walking... AGAIN!

Well, after gaining Cecille in our party and watching the death of a great man, we reach Carbunculus City and get introduced to some high-end snobbery and douchebaggery at first, but meet up with Luze and her bodyguard of sorts.
After all that, we get diverted to the Senate and we all know how THAT works when you're not on the dominating party's side...
