This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. From Galileo's refracting telescope, which fits in a pocket yet revolutionized the world’s view of planet earth and the solar system, to the massive BICEP2 polarization telescope deployed at the South Pole, Professor Brian Keating takes us on a journey back to the big bang, some 13.8 billion years ago, and speaks to the possibility of our existence within a multi-verse, based on the data collected by this telescope.
Professor Brian Keating is an astrophysicist with UCSD’s Department of Physics. He and his team of 17 students, and postdocs develop instrumentation to study the early universe at radio-, microwave- and infrared wavelengths. He is the author of over 100 scientific publications and holds a U.S. Patent. Professor Keating co-leads a collaboration operating the POLARBEAR telescope in the Atacama Desert of Chile.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Michael J. Saylor is an American entrepreneur and business executive, who co-founded & leads MicroStrategy, a company that provides business intelligence, mobile software, and cloud-based services. Saylor, an MIT trained engineer, authored the 2012 book The Mobile Wave: How Mobile Intelligence Will Change Everything. He is also the sole trustee of Saylor Academy (www.saylor.org ), a provider of free online education. As of 2016, Saylor has been granted 31 patents and has 9 additional applications under review. We covered a ton of content in this interview including 'the physics of money', the purpose of wealth, and Michael's philosophy of life. You won't want to miss his philosophy of life. On MicroStrategy's quarterly earnings conference call in July 2020, Saylor announced his intention for MicroStrategy to explore purchasing Bitcoin, gold, or other alternative assets instead of holding cash. The following month, MicroStrategy used $250 million from its cash stockpile to purchase 21,454 Bitcoin.
MicroStrategy added $175 million of Bitcoin to its holdings in September 2020 and another $50 million in early December 2020. On December 11, 2020, MicroStrategy announced that it had sold $650 million in convertible senior notes, taking on debt to increase its Bitcoin holdings to over $1 billion worth. On December 21, 2020 MicroStrategy announced their total holdings include 70,470 bitcoins purchased for $1.125 billion at an average price of $15,964 per bitcoin. Saylor, who controls 70% of MicroStrategy's shares, dismissed concerns by observers that the move is turning MicroStrategy into a Bitcoin investment firm or exchange-traded fund (ETF).
In 1999, Saylor established The Saylor Foundation (later named Saylor Academy), of which he is the sole trustee. To support his goal of making free education available to all students, Saylor.org was launched in 2008 as the free education initiative of The Saylor Foundation. The site now offers roughly 100 college courses that are supported by free content from universities including MIT and Carnegie Mellon University, that students can access without having to pass through an admissions process

A couple of years ago, I co-hosted a thrilling conversation @TheInstituteOfArtAndIdeas between Sabine Hossenfelder, Carlo Rovelli, and Eric Weinstein as they debated quantum physics, consciousness, and the mystery of reality. In this clip, we talked about whether there was a need for a new Theory of Everything. Enjoy!
We imagine physics is objective. But quantum physics found the act of human observation changes the outcome of experiment. Many scientists assume this central role of the observer is limited to just quantum physics. But is this an error? As Heisenberg puts it, "what we observe is not nature in itself but nature exposed to our method of questioning." In all our studies of reality and nature then, the observer plays a role -- not just in quantum physics.
Should we recognise science can never access reality independent of the observer? Should we re-define science not as uncovering objective reality, but as uncovering the functions, limitations and structures of the mind of the observer themselves? And if we cannot remove the observer, might quantum physics help us to understand the observer - as Roger Penrose suggests consciousness "reeks of something quantum mechanical."
The Institute of Art and Ideas features videos and articles from cutting edge thinkers discussing the ideas that are shaping the world, from metaphysics to string theory, technology to democracy, aesthetics to genetics. Subscribe today!

We take if for granted and it’s essential to all the life we know. It makes up 70% of the surface of the earth and 60% of our bodies. Water. But have you stopped to ponder from where water comes? Incredibly all the water on earth is of extraterrestrial origins. Earth does not “make” any water. All the water on earth now has not changed much in billions of years and the amount we have is almost all there will ever be. Less than 1% of it is readily available for human and animal consumption.
Water is perhaps of the most unique compound known. Its hexagonal structure gives it extraordinary properties that support life including the fact that it expands when frozen.
All water is not alike. In this video Professor Keating examines water from various sources including Antarctica and the isotopic variety of water known as heavy water or deuterium. He also explains more exotic forms including the stuff of fusion; tritium.
We’ll discover how the origin of water is tied to the origin of the univers and the fate of stars. And why water is one of the most common compounds in the universe.
