Title: Midnight Rambler_ A Novel of Suspense
Author: James Swain
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Mystery
Description:From Publishers WeeklySwain, author of the gambling crime series starring Tony Valentine (_Grift Sense_, etc.), avoids many of the clichés of the antisocial ex-cop novel in this chilling stand-alone. A specialist in finding missing children, former cop Jack Carpenter was fired from the force for assaulting a prisoner. Broke after a civil lawsuit and estranged from his wife and daughter, he's living in a seedy beachside apartment north of Miami, Fla., with his dog. Then Simon Skell (aka the Midnight Rambler), whom Carpenter helped convict for murdering prostitutes, is released from prison on a technicality. Determined to prove Skell guilty, Carpenter is frozen out by the cop on the case, but help comes from an FBI agent whose daughter vanished years earlier. The tension rises as the investigation widens far beyond Skell. Well-defined characters and intricately woven subplots, one involving a nail-biting scene at Disney World, make this a page-turner. 12-city author tour. (Oct.) br Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. ReviewPraise for James Swain and Midnight Rambler “Midnight Rambler is a heavy hitter, fast and spare. Travis McGee meets Philip Marlow.”br –Randy Wayne White, author of Hunter’s Moon “Moves like a bullet train on overdrive . . . I tore through this one without putting on the brakes. I guarantee you will, too!”br –Michael Connelly “Midnight Rambler kept me up all night long, and Jack Carpenter is as appealing a hero as I’ve ever met. The only problem with Swain’s riveting thrillers is they end.”br –Tess Gerritsen, author of The Bone Garden “Swain is one terrific writer.”br –The Wall Street Journal From the Hardcover edition.
Title: The Interruption of Everything
Author: Terry McMillan
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Fiction
Description:Amazon.com ReviewTerry McMillans sixth novel, The Interruption of Everything, is every bit as enthralling and empowering as her earlier hits strong and strong. However, as McMillan matures as an author, her characters follow suit, which leads her to a wiser, more introspective lead character in the form of Marilyn Grimes. Our reward, as readers, is a tale of midlife crisis, mixed with family and personal drama, all told in the witty, honest, and inspiring style weve come to expect from this seasoned storyteller. As Marilyn approaches middle-age, we follow her struggle to discover herself outside the constraints of a passionless marriage, a demanding family and an ever-growing list of dreams deferred. With three children in college, a husband who suffers from destructive professional and personal inertia, a demanding mother-in-law, a senile mother and a drug-addicted sister, Marilyn has more on her plate than she expected at this stage of the game. Torn between taking care of her friends and family and attending to her own needs, shes faced with choices, like deciding to finish her graduate degree, that never before seemed hers to make. Along the way, supporting characters like Marilyns feisty little niece and supportive-yet-opinionated best friends Paulette and Bunny add humor and depth to our heroines character. And as always, McMillan does a flawless job of incorporating humor into even the most traumatic situations, as evidenced by a scene in which Marilyn ends up babysitting her hairdressers children while waiting twelve hours for new braids. (At three, Blue has to make a run. Orange has to go to the bank to get a money order. I ask Lexus to find me a Pamper and I take the baby in the bathroom.)Warm and witty, sincere and heartfelt, The Interruption of Everything is sure to delight McMillan devotees and attract a host of new fans. --Gisele TouegFrom Publishers WeeklyMarilyn Grimes is desperately frustrated with her life as a housewife and amateur crafts maker. The world seems to be conspiring against her, as she and her husband hit the emotional and physical rocks of middle age and her extended family keeps erupting in chaos. Emmy Award–winning Whitfields attempt at husky male voices is awkward, but she does a great job with both older women (Marilyns mother, who has Alzheimers, and her sassy mother-in-law, who elopes with her new retirement home lover). Oddly, her voice as Marilyn is often not engaging. In some ways the weakness in her characterization is appropriate, as Marilyn claims her soul has been in hiding as shes catered to everyone elses needs. But some listeners may get bored by Marilyns narration, especially compared to her lively girlfriends and family. Still, Whitfield was a natural choice for the part, and she mostly lives up to her reputation in delivering this journey of self-discovery. Also available unabridged on 10 CDs and narrated by Desiree Taylor. br Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
Title: The Whiskey Rebels_ A Novel
Author: David Liss
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Mystery:Historical
Description:From Publishers WeeklySet in and around Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and New York City in the years after the Revolutionary War, this clever thriller from Liss (_The Ethical Assassin_) follows the adventures of Ethan Saunders, once a valiant spy for General Washington, who's fallen on hard times by war's end. Suspected of treason, Ethan has lost the love of his life, Cynthia, who's married the fiendish Jacob Pearson, an entrepreneur who managed to prosper during the British occupation of Philadelphia. At Cynthia's urging, Ethan agrees to go looking for the missing Jacob, prompted in large part by a desire to redeem his reputation. Meanwhile, the so-called whiskey rebels on the western frontier are trying to bring down the hated Alexander Hamilton and his Bank of the United States. The courageous Ethan is a likable rogue, and even though Ethan spends too much time delving into the complications of 18th-century finance, he can be counted on when the chips are down and the odds against him soar. (Oct.) br Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. FromDavid Liss has found his niche as a historical novelist, and The Whiskey Rebels is an entertaining, if slightly uneven, slice of Americana. Liss's strength here lies in the details, particularly in the historical figures who play minor roles—George Washington, Aaron Burr, Phillip Freneau, and Hugh Henry Brackenridge among them. Those characters add color to the plot and evoke the late 18th-century history that many of us (for shame) have forgotten. Despite some sharp dialogue, though, the story slows in places, and several critics mention a tendency for the complex plot to hinge on predictable or contrived elements. Still, Liss is a master of the genre, and The Whiskey Rebels is good fun.br 2008 Bookmarks Publishing LLC
