Small/light camcorders are great in terms of portability, but they suck because they are sensitive to vibration. In this hand-held videograph, one can see some of this shake.
Solutions:
- use a camera's built-in EIS (electronic image stability) feature; we don't like this as it degrades image quality a bit.
- use a tripod (though this limits portability as well as the ability to dolly)
- use a SteadiCam (or similar device; they allow movement and dollying, but are not as steady as a tripod).

Camera tripodded in Los Angeles Public Library courtyard, near 5th and Figueroa. The U.S. Bank Tower and Citigroup building are some of the notable skyscrapers in the Bunker Hill (or financial district) area.

Driving south on Los Angeles freeway 110 near 105 interchange. The area is roughly eastern Gardena, California.
There are four (4) lanes plus a carpool lane on the far right. Most local drivers drive fast (when traffic permits): 70-75mph. I'm going 60-65mph.
A lightweight camcorder was placed on the dash of a Toyota Echo (not a luxury auto) so it picks up a lot of vibration.
Technical stuff:
The jerkiness of the video present a good opportunity to gauge the effectiveness of different types of deinterlacing and other processing tweaks. I deinterlaced with Yadif. Although this clip was captured on a plain ol' NTSC miniDV camcorder, effective post-production tweaking (see below) made for a nice, smooth, artifact-free image.

Orion and Sirius are hard to make out at YouTube resolution. The constellation stars "move" (actually Earth is moving!) between the Deloitte bldg and the SBC bldg (far right).
Streaks are airplanes.
Camera is pointing East and up.

I mounted a Canon Digital Rebel SLR to my touring bike's rear rack, using a Manfrotto super-clamp. A remote, locking shutter-release was used to begin and end camera "firings". I usually let the camera fire at its own pace -- it's a bit fast at first, but it slows to good, steady rate after about 30 frames. For shots where I need more control, such as long-duration star/constellation sequences, I use software/laptop/USB cable.
Note that this sequence is different from the similarly-framed, miniDV-based segment (found at the end of the Enigma video) I uploaded later:
