Breaking Free started in 2009 as a BMX media company. For about a decade, we produced seven video projects, including two full-length DVDs (all of these productions are on the Breaking Free Skatepark YouTube channel). We also had photos published in many mainstream BMX outlets. In 2016, the dream expanded to the lofty goal of starting Breaking Free Skatepark. In three months, with the help of many gracious volunteers, Breaking Free Skatepark was born from RASP, CRANX, and thousands of hours of hard labor. What we lacked in capital, we made up in grit, passion, and energy. For those who have been around since our opening on December 17, 2016, you know how far we have come, as well as how we are becoming better every year. We even survived covid!
I (Dave/ @gnarwrech) speak of Breaking Free Skatepark (BFS) as “we” because I truly believe that the community and culture that we have fostered is a continual and endless group effort. I have watched so many of you or your kids grow up and become amazing riders, followed by moving away to college, joining the armed services, or one of thousands of other life paths. I am more than honored to have been a part of numerous people's journeys. I hope, when y’all reflect on your time at BFS, that you share the same fondness that I have about my early years as a budding rider.
Breaking Free Skatepark turns FIVE years old this December 17th. Every year on our birthday, we like to give back to our customers by giving you a free day of riding. This year, we are throwing a GnarBQ! There will be no charge for riding from 4pm to 9 pm, and we will be grilling free burgers and dawgs. DJ Zipdrive will be in the house, too. And as if that's not enough, we will be raffling off an Envy scooter, a Mini Logo skateboard deck, a Breaking Free hoodie, and a North scooter deck. Everyone receives one free ticket when signing in and may purchase as many more as they wish for $1 a ticket. At 9pm, the park will close for a VIP invite-only afterparty.
