Heeley Train Station, Sheffield - What Remains of the Old Station Today. The station opened with the inauguration of the Midland Railway's main line between Chesterfield and Sheffield on 1 February 1870. The station included a carriage siding and was built on the former Heeley Mill site. Initially, there were two platforms. However, two more were built when the line from Sheffield to Dore was widened between 1901 and 1903. It was the only station on this section of the line that was an elevated station with subway access from below to the platforms. The subway is still present although both entrances have been blocked in; the entrance on London Road can be seen and iron railings are present. The station closed on 10 June 1968. Sheffield Old Cementation Furnace. A Scheduled Ancient Monument on Doncaster Street. This furnace is designed for the manufacture of blister steel, the original raw material for crucible steel. Blister steel was little used for this purpose after c1870, but this furnace remained in use until 1952. It is the sole survivor of a characteristic industrial building once numerous in Sheffield. The cementation furnace is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
