BAK 2200mAH 18650 cells, Part 2 - Testing 10P Groups
A couple of tips I found helpful in testing these single cells.
Since I was originally testing pairs of 18650 cells in my power shelf, I didn't think to notch the cell holders for easier cell removal. With the holders packed tightly together on the shelf, it's hard to get them out after testing. An old ribbon laid under the cells makes quick work of removal.
The new cells come in boxes of 100. They are tightly packed and have a cardboard matrix inside to keep the cells separated. That makes removing cells from the box difficult since they are so tightly packed. SO I made a tool to make removal easier.

This tool seems like more of an artistic representation of a nut driver. I can't figure out what it could be used for. But then I glued a 12mm neodymium magnet into the end and it's an awesome tool for removing cells from the shipping box.
No need to use a 3D printer to make a similar tool. Just glue a magnet to the end of a wooden dowel or other non-conductive material and use that. You probably want to avoid using a metallic tool since you might accidentally short out some cells if you dropped it.

Converting an old Harbor Freight Solar Shed Light from CFL to LED.
This was a solar shed light kit I purchased at Harbor Freight in 2010 to install in my garden shed.
It has a small solar panel, 14 cells, ~8Voc and ~100mA Isc, that's directly connected to a 4S NiCad battery pack with no charging circuitry. The batteries are mounted directly behind the solar panel and get cooked by the heat of the sunlight and also the constant, unregulated charging. A wire feeds a small PCB with a free running oscillator and step up transformer that drives a 4W, 6500*K T4 tube. This worked OK for a few months then it failed.
I simply cut off the driver board and hooked the red/blue wires to a set of 6 - 12V 5050 LED modules. It draws 600mA @ 13V or about 8W. I also added an output 5.5 x 2.1mm power jack to feed additional LEDs off the switch inside the lamp.

Let's look at the components needed to build a Z-Wave controlled dual high current DC relay module.
I want to be able to control 2 DC loads remotely. I use a Z-Wave home automation controller, so that will be my interface. There are DC relay modules available, but most are of a low current design. My prototype used a Z-Wave outdoor appliance module and while it worked fine, it was relatively expensive and bulky.
So my plan is to use this dual relay module from Monoprice:

and put that in an electrical box with two switches and two receptacles and make a single box that I can plug in two 12W wall warts to control 2 12V, 30A relays.

From the wiring diagrams, it appears there was little change, but in reality there were large changes.
It seems many of these changes were done for safety reasons. Power window lock switches were added to disable passenger side power windows. The switches were redesigned to be harder to accidentally actuate.

Let's swap out the 20W halogen bulb with a 3W LED in this "over the stove" microwave/convection oven.
First of a series of videos about the GE/Kenmoore Advantium Speedcook oven . I've had this oven for about 10 years now and really like it. This is the 120V model, so lacks some of the features of the in-wall 240V model, but otherwise is very similar. Mine is the Kenmoore Elite brand from Sears, but identical to the GE Profile brand.

Be sure your oven uses a 12V bulb here, apparently some models might use a higher voltage bulb. If so, be sure the LED replacement you select is rated for the voltage of the light bulb in your oven.
LED has worked well and has paid for itself both in terms of power savings as well as eliminating ~4 halogen bulb replacements @$5/ea.

This video will wrap up the initial test results of the Synology SSD cache.
Over the course of about 5 weeks, the 280GB SSD read/write cache has gradually filled up. File server performance is noticeably snappier, especially for tasks involving many small file accesses.
I host my Thunderbird e-mail profile off of the DiskStation so that I am able to access that shared profile from any PC. Prior to installing the SSD cache, loading e-mails with lots of image content was very sluggish. Now, those same e-mails just pop up like I was loading them off of local storage.
Likewise, my Windows Media Center TV recording episode counts seem to pop right up when you start Media Center. The DiskStation functions as my "whole house DVR'.
With a RAID file server, files can get spread out over all the disks in the array. This can result in increased latency since you have increased the probability that at least one disk will have to perform a seek. Since the SSD drive has a near-zero seek time, having that data in the cache greatly reduces the latency of the RAID array.
Now, the DiskStation is only limited by my current Ethernet configuration. I run an unmanaged (dumb) Ethernet switch that can only provide a single Gb/s connection to the DiskStation. This limits transfer rates to about 100MB/s on a single connection, but with multiple connections, I only get ~30MB/s rates. Next plan is to obtain a managed Ethernet switch that supports 802.3ad Link Aggregation:

This will allow me to set up at least 2 network connections to the DiskStation and finally be able to max out that part of the system.
Overall, I'm quite happy with the SSD cache. I think I could have gone with a larger cache based upon my installed memory. On the other hand, since it has taken over 5 weeks to fill up, the size I selected is probably more than adequate for my needs. I think the SSD Cache Advisor tool suggestions need to be taken with a grain of salt. If you run those, ignore the largest numbers it reports, that is if it lists 4 or 5 entries of 30GB and then 1 or 2 entries of 1TB, throw out the 1TB numbers and go with the smaller numbers. Maybe run it daily for a couple of weeks and collect the recommended cache sizes and pick a value from those sizes.

Testing some new 2200mAH Lithion-Ion cells for the power wall battery.
I decided to pick up a few boxes of these new cells to see how they stack up against the used laptop cells I've been using up until now. For sure a lot less work involved and so far have not seen any bad cells in the batch.
Tested capacity averages:

I should be able to build 4S20P modules out of these with about 34AH capacity, which is somewhat higher than the capacity of my used packs. I'll keep the new cells in separate modules from the used cells if possible. Over time, I'll try to compare capacity between selected used and new packs and see how they are holding up.

A few modifications I've made to my metal cutting lathe including a block off plate to keep debris out of the motor cooling fan blades.
I fashioned a scrap of sheet metal to fill a corner of the factory back shield to prevent lathe swarf from getting into the motor cooling fan. Two pop rivets worked grate to hold the shield in place. After almost a year, I've only had one occasion where a small piece of debris get sucked up into the fan, but it blew out on it's own.
I also have added a couple of spring clips to the back shield to hold a file by the chuck for rounding off sharp corners and a plastic mallet by the tail stock for tapping things in and out of that.
I mainly use 12V DC lighting around the lathe and find that the steady light makes lathe use easier. The old fluorescent lights I used to use flickered and caused a strobing effect on the spinning chuck.

Since the old TV can't receive signals anymore, I'll need to inject audio/video signals into it, but how?
The TV has a 3.5mm, 4-pole TRRS jack and came with a 3-RCA plug cable that plugs into that jack. So all is good, I just plug that into a Raspberry Pi model B+ 4-pole A/V jack and all is good.
Wrong, there are more than one TRRS cable pin-out as I found out:

And as luck would have it, I have the "Avoid this type of cable" cable, so what now? Ideally I wanted to use a 4-pole plug-plug cable, but that would short out the RPi video output to the ground of the TV.
Since I already have a TRRS-3RCA cable, if I could get a little adapter with the proper TRRS-3RCA output for the RPi, I could simply plug my cable into that and call it good.
Problem is nobody seems to publish the pin outs of the cables, but I found this one seller on eBay:

Pretty simple, make a folder with channel icons in it.
It's fairly simple, but you need to follow the rules. The main rule is the base name of the channel icon has to EXACTLY match the call letters of the channel that the icon is for.
So where to start? I found this page:

it had a file named TV_Logos_USA.zip that was a starting point.
It won't get you anything that works because those are generic network logos, for example CBS.png. Problem is my local CBS affiliate call letters are KPIX and more importantly the PSIP data for that channel is KPIX-TV, so that must be the base name for the channel icon for that channel. So one option is to rename CBS.png to KPIX-TV.png.
What icons to use? Anything you want. You can re-name the network logos or you can download logos off of the TV station's web page or I found LogoPedia a great resource:

It has collections of logos for TV channels from the past to the present. If you have a channel icon from 20 years ago you like, use it. If you want the current one, use that. If you like the original 1957 NBC Peacock logo, use that:

Just select "Save Image As" and save it to your channel icons folder. But don't forget to rename it to the EXACT channel call letters or Kodi won't see it. I think capitalization is ignored.
Repeat for each channel you want to have an icon for. If you use a shared folder and have multiple Kodi clients that can receive Live TV, then point them all to the same folder. Then as you update the icons, all you need to do is select the "Scan for Missing Icons" option in the Live TV Settings menu. You can do as many or few channels as you want, so some now and some later, it's all up to you.

This should work on all versions of Kodi and likely earlier XBMC versions. I've used the exact same logos on the Raspberry Pi and Raspberry Pi 2 as well as on the Windows version of Kodi.
Also, this is specifically for Live TV with your local over the air broadcast TV stations. Many of the other PVR clients, like IPTV, may have channel icon add-ons or packages available for their streams. But again, that all works the same, a stream named XYZ needs to have a channel icon named XYZ.jpg or XYZ.png.
Will this make Kodi run better or faster? No. But it has a more polished look and since you can select the logos you like, you can customize the look to suite your tastes.
